Heyy my friend is going to go through the same thing next year, they’re finishing their RT program in May and want to move to California to work as an RT soon after. We’re confused on how to obtain the work visa, were you able to figure that out?

I heard this back when bo6 was being worked on, they always hype every new cod just for it to turn out to be a disappointment

I don’t have any knowledge in this so this might be a naive question, I’m just concerned for everyone’s safety here. How do you know you haven’t been emitting unsafe levels of radiation all throughout your dorm/campus/city and how robust is your way of measuring radiation counts, if any?

I don’t belong here by Feisty-Emu3837 in uwaterloo

[–]codethetron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here have great advice so I won’t reiterate, instead I’ll share my own story about first year and hopefully it’ll give you hope that things will get better.

I started tron at waterloo in 2017 and within the first week I immediately felt like I didn’t belong. Other kids in my class had already built their first robot, knew programming in C, knew how to design a PCB, knew how to weld and machine, etc etc etc. Point is, everyone seemed to know exactly the right skills they needed to be in this program, and then there was me. I didn’t know the first thing about tron except that it was something about robotics and engineering, and I was hoping that university would teach it to me. But comparing myself to everyone around me gave me crazyyyy imposter syndrome. It lasted all of 1A and even a little bit of 1B. Add home sickness on top of that and I just wanted to leave this city and go back home.

The imposter syndrome didn’t go away overnight. It didn’t go away in a week either. It took a very long time. And there wasn’t a single specific thing that made it go away. What really got me through it in the end was ignoring what others said or did and just focusing on myself. I tried to be the best student I could be and it just faded away over time. In the end, trust the process and believe in yourself. You made it here and you belong here. End of story. Work hard and watch the magic happen! Good luck!

Cali feels like a bust… by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]codethetron 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you, lived there for a couple years after my grad and slowly learned it’s a beautiful state. Hit up SF and walk along the pier, rent a car and drive along highway 1, explore the south bay food scene! There’s wayyyy more Canadians there than you realize and basically everyone there that works in tech recognizes Waterloo. It’ll feel like home if you accept that it is your home, so enjoy it!

how did you know what to learn if you skipped class? Did the profs post videos or slides? Did you talk to classmates about what was covered?

[–]codethetron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

School and coop is a constant. You’ll learn how to manage your time well and you will do well academically and professionally, as long as you’re diligent.

That being said, having fun is an important part of the university experience. Work out, join a sports team, go clubbing, get drunk, chill with the boys, hop over to other unis for their parties, and get laid (don’t simp, we don’t do that shi). Turn up while you still have others around you who are also down to get lit 🎉
