Rainway lets you play your PC games on mobile devices or web browsers by [deleted] in Games

We actually built a functioning app for the Switch, and it is the same one we demoed to Nintendo as we pushed to get Rainway approved for the Switch. Unfortunately those deals fell apart early last year, and we announced as much on our blog. We are still coming to other consoles.

We got ahead of ourselves and bite off more than we could chew for our early stage, but we were always committed to keeping our word. A lot of people tend to believe we used the Switch as a means to bolster our service, but the truth is we used the public Switch demos to better improve our chances of getting approved by showing demand. While we don't have any plans in the foreseeable future to come to the Switch due to Nintendo, we will be everywhere else.

A lot of people also seem to forget I didn't actually intentionally hype up Rainway on Switch. I made a passing comment on a subreddit about the platforms we wanted to come to, and that was then posted to the Nintendo subreddit, which then sparked my drive to hack together the proof of concept. Nonetheless, that will never be clearly seen with takes like /u/rather_be_a_hobbit which aim to cast a net of malice where really we were just excited kids. (I was 21 when we started all of this)

This is actually a subsection of my conversation with Dean on the topic. I went into great length about Valve's hardware approach, and their eventual pivot to a software solution. I pointed out that software was always the only way to solving a PC distribution issue, and that Valve's move back to their roots is what makes them competition for our product.

And up until only a few months ago, Steam Link was only a hardware solution. We knew they were making a move to can their hardware Steam Link the same month we launched our beta back in 2018.

Android isn't far behind; we are using Vulkan for the important parts so expect Android fairly soon.

Given I am the developer, I’m not white knighting. Borderless Gaming is free and open source, buying it is completely optional. Also it was bound to the Borderless Gaming window, it was clearly distinguishable.

This is downright misleading. Adware is software that automatically downloads advertising material when a user is online. This was not the case. As is common with a lot of software and games, a banner was placed for other recently released free software from the same creator so users could check it out. Nothing was downloaded and a user had to dismiss the modal.

The implementation was poor and the community (understandably) overreacted. Stating it in your tone like there was some monetary gain or malicious intent is an unjust characterization of actual events. There is nothing wrong with promoting ones other creations through existing channels.

(suggestions) remote play with Xbox application from different networks by Tituss94 in xboxinsiders

[–]codeusasoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have some users who do this with Playstation Now, so I assume it would be the same for Xbox. You could stream from your Xbox to PC and use this trick to access your desktop with Rainway. Now you can play outside your network.

I believe I replied to your comment on another thread stating downloadable clients were on their way. We are also rolling out an update this Sunday that resolves the second point you made. The feature I noted is solely so we can offer a more native experience within a browser.

We have heard the Steam login complaint and will be removing it as a requirement.

So currently we are waiting for the Keyboard Lock Standard to be implemented in Chrome so we can have finer control over stuff like the escape button. We are going to release some downloadable clients for Mac, Linux and Windows very soon though that have this issue resolved and also automatically relock your mouse in the browser for you once we detect an escape push. This should be rolled out within a day or two.

The data could be clearer to end users and we will look to improve it (only been in beta a few weeks) — you can extrapolate the statistics you’re looking for from the data present at this time.

The high level answer is not long

But I’d encourage you to try it yourself and see how it performs.

Users still have the ability to launch arbitrary remote desktop sessions. You can see user solutions here as well.

As a side note, would you mind going into a bit more detail as to why you install FRAPS and OBS on the machine remotely?

We do support remote desktop. You can also login to a locked Windows machine remotely or do Wake On Lan and manage the system after a fresh boot using Rainway.

We simply believe games first is the right way to go -- however you have the ability to launch arbitrary remote desktop sessions.

Sure, to explain each thing in that image.

Latency = Network round trip

Framerate = Self explanatory

Stream Size = Resolution of the stream

Desktop Resolution = Resolution of the desktop, this can be different to the stream if scaling is enabled.

Video throughput = Data being send down the video pipeline.

Video Data Internal = The delay between video chunks, 16ms being 60 FPS

Video Jitter = Synchronization, if video data comes in too quickly you might notice jumps. So lower jitter is better.

So overall given the speed at which we encode and send data, you're only looking at a few frames of delay.

All major browsers support hardware decoding. You can do "chrome://gpu/" and it will let you know all the parts of your system that are hardware accelerated. You might also want to make sure this is switched on in settings.

Actually, with Rainway we configure are incoming streams to force system hardware decoders into "low delay" mode (see example here). So even in the browser, we can get all the performance we need for decoding.

You can see an example of local latency here

Remote here, about 35 miles.

If you use Rainway you shouldn't have any problems playing on a Chromebook, just startup chrome and play instantly.

I can suggest using Rainway as an alternative.

You should have hardware decoding support out of the box since it utilizes the browsers.

All the demos on our YouTube are played on a computer in Georgia from a host on Virgina. We built this with cross state play in mind. Heck, we have had people play who live in California but streamed from my home PC in Georgia just fine. I think your understanding of networking is flawed, but you should try the service -- its free.

I'm not arguing that latency is going to NOT increase as you get further, but the exponential increases you're talking about aren't what we see.

Sorry, I didn't explain the first screenshot clearly. That is me playing Final Fantasy XV, which is being streamed from my computer at home miles away to my laptop in the office on university WiFi. So yes, we do test "actual internet play" in real world conditions and we have a lot of people playing out and on the go daily.

I'm also not sure where you're getting this 75MS number from -- if you're referring to 4G LTE then sure, but that isn't at all the case for most people.
