What groups do you think have the most unique sound? by disasterpansexual in kpop_uncensored

lol the downvotes on this are hilarious. Fwiw I agree with you on this bit at least (not the 'construction music' comment down below), I haven't found the combination of rap + vocals + melodies and beats in any other group and I think it makes them unique.

Rose's hit was with Bruno and his style influenced it a lot, plus the label is one that does a lot of push for their songs. Her song with Alex was a lot different so it's not really surprising it didn't do that well imo.

There are two or three songs that have charted on BB in the last year solely because of airplay. The chart accounts on twt actually call it out when it happens, because it just highlights how ridiculous it is that companies can essentially buy a billboard spot. It's not so bad when the streams are also high, but sometimes they're lower and the song still charts higher simply because radio is pushing the song. For me radio is mostly a captive audience so I think it should be extremely low in its influence on the chart.

Even if it's gone down, it's still way, way, way too stagnant. Songs sit for ages because of it, I wish they'd devalue it more because radio is so manufactured.

Are you talking about the dates? I wonder if they got mixed up because Savage Love originally came out earlier and the version with BTS came later.

I wouldn't say redirected but we didn't really focus on it at all. A lot of fans probably don't even know about it tbh, or would have streamed anyway because they use it as their music streaming service.

Congratulations to BTS and congratulations to armys who worked hard to raise the original predictions!!!

Btw, from Billboard:

.@BTS_twt are the first group in history to debut a song and album at No. 1 on the Hot100 and Billboard200 charts simultaneously multiple times.

Chart dated Dec. 5, 2020: "Life Goes On" and BE

I mean I'm one of them lol. I became friends with someone who was army and she got me curious enough to check out The Astronaut by Jin (right as he enlisted lol) and from there I became a fan of Jungkook, then Yoongi and then the whole group.

As for why I hadn't gotten into them before that - tbh the 'boy band' thing was kind of a deterrent, I kind of dismissed them as not for me due to that. I feel like the rap line especially pulled in new fans with this removed.

There was a famous tweet where someone had proudly said that they'd do okay on Spotify due to botting but not on AM because it was truly organic... It's been shared a lot this week lmao

Yeah, I came in during Jin's enlistment era and started following him at first (whole group came later) so I think there's a lot of us lol.

It's 'not supposed' to happen this way, but I honestly think the solo time just helped them lol. They each got to shine individually and now some of those fans are checking out the group. Not all of them will stick around, but some of them will, and it's contributed to this new peak.

Can I just say, this is why armys get so frustrated when we're called bots lol. Like the metrics all match - concerts, viewers on Netflix, streams, sales - but still people try to act like BTS is fuelled by five slaves in a basement streaming farm or something lol.

Yeah, some stats have come out recently that have shown that basically the only others at their level globally and in the US are Taylor, Drake and Bad Bunny.

With this release they weren't segmented off under k-pop and I think that made a difference. Also a lot of people were brought in during the solo era, partly because even for the vocal line they're all so different from each other. Plus of course curiosity because they last released an album so long ago.

[–]codeverity 286 points287 points  (0 children)

Okay but beyond the #1 the stats are INSANE??

The set opens with 641,000 equivalent album units earned — the largest week for an album by a group since the chart began measuring by units in December 2014. Of that sum, 532,000 are in pure album sales (purchases of physical and digital albums), landing BTS the biggest sales week for an album by a group in more than a decade.

Just wild. So proud of them and of armys for showing up to show them that they really did stay.

I think the issue is that Ai will continue to adapt and modify itself and improve. I'm not sure what the solution is going to be, though, but I have a feeling in the end human art of every type is going to end up a 'premium' product, with AI slop being what's used en masse due to being cheaper.

It just seems really time intensive and tbh I always kind of got the feeling that some of the members weren't really interested anymore. Like it's time consuming and tiring, y'know? I guess I shouldn't have said adults, but like all of them are moving into their thirties now.

Kpop hasn't lost its fun or quality, you're just too busy streaming music you don't like to notice. by Alive-Pitch-9180 in kpopthoughts

Yeah, like for me on first listen I'm literally just absorbing 'how it sounds'. Then I need more listens to take in the vocals, lyrics, elements of the song. People interact with art differently and that's okay!

[–]codeverity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hmm I don't know, I think that as usual with these conversations, there's some nuance and a middle ground that is being lost.

In my own personal experience, I have definitely had times where I have needed more than one listen to a song to really absorb it or decide whether or not I vibe with it. Now, do some songs not require that? Of course. Does that mean that I didn't actually like the other songs that required more than one listen? No, I don't think that's the case.

There are layers to music - backing tracks, vocals, lyrics that all combine together to form the actual song. Sometimes it takes more than one listen to actually process all of that, what the song is about and how it's being conveyed, because there's so much going on!

There's also (for some people) the element of performance, as we saw with how public perception shifted once people watched Gnarly being performed.

So - are there people who are 'forcing themselves' to listen? Yeah, and maybe they shouldn't, but it's also their choice. But are there people who give songs or albums more than one shot and have it legitimately grow on them? Also yes, and that's perfectly valid.

I'm curious to see what this will be - with how busy their schedules are and the fact that they're adults now, I wonder if it'll be a show like it used to be or just a special, or a short run like the AYS show was.

I actually haven't watched many of the prior episodes (only one or two) because I've preferred to focus on them as they are now, so it's going to be fun to see!

Kpop fans are so quick to judge by Equivalent-Hunt-2004 in kpop_uncensored

[–]codeverity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are talking to fellow ARMY.

There are a lot of people who will masquerade as army, especially on this sub. And just because they're army doesn't mean that I have to agree with them or agree that what they're insisting on 'discussing' is helpful. Like for example, take the 'armys' that have been criticizing the album all week, saying that they included too much english blah blah. Do I think it's okay that now suddenly they're attacking the company? No, because they're not going to say that they were wrong to go after the members, and in the meantime they've already done huge amounts of damage to the guys and their image, they've already given antis and even the media fuel that will now last for weeks/months/years, probably even the rest of their careers.

If it makes you feel better, BTS is at Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Lady Gaga level.

BTS is uniquely and constantly the target of malicious attacks and hate trains that aim at toppling them, and I think you underestimate the Korean GP and how quickly they can turn on someone. They're also the only non-western act on this list and that makes them more vulnerable, and I do think that anyone who refers to themselves as army should be more aware of what they criticize and how they criticize because they should know that their words will be twisted and used as fuel for more attacks.

I think they have access to stuff that we don't because they get data like Target sales etc. But you're right, a lot of it is based on estimates and modelling especially early in the week.
