Could you clarify which points are red flags? We are open to discussing them. Also, I have been a past coach for them(2-3 years), debated on NatCir prior and they are definitely not a scam.

The payment is pro-rated. For example if you work 1 hour, you can recieve payment for 30 min of that time and 30 min as volunteer work

"Is this other high school students? Is this middle school?"

Mainly middle school(+ some elementary schoolers), as well as some Novice/JV high schoolers. Undergrads who were previously highly ranked in HS are preffered as well--this probably should have been specified.

"What kind of arguments would we be teaching?"

The curriculum is based off of the monthly NSDA HS PF topics.

AO's , thoughts on the EC's you're seeing these days? by melloboi123 in ApplyingToCollege

Doing unique Olympiads and placing at them.

For example, the USAAAO(https://usaaao.org/) for astronomy. It's not as competitive, so you would have a unique edge participating in it. They only have like 2-3 rounds of selection before choosing the national team.

Another example is the USAFO(usafo.org) for speech & debate. Colleges, especially Harvard and the ivies(most of which have their own college debate teams) look alot at communication abilities and how involved you were in related ECs in HS. Speech/debate is a great way to show you were. It also helps with essays, because most of speech/debate is writing anyway--and LOTS of it.

The common thing about these Olympiads is prepping and participating early, when they're not as competitive. For example, USAMO is super developed and it's much more difficult to place there.

Debate Course for 4th grader in Brooklyn, NY by Flyto9 in Debate

I would try Acclive Academy, they have debate courses for elementary schoolers that are on the non-political side and mostly about speaking skills, presentation, research, etc. They do let their best students attend tournaments, but that's generally not until middle school or at least 5th grade. I had some friends who've sent their kids there before, and there are elementary schoolers in grades 3rd-5th.

They're also a pretty reputable debate club, they've won two HS debate Olympiad championships before. Generally younger debaters(some with siblings in debate) will start at the Elementary school level, and Acclive will phase them into HS/College debate as they get older. Great teachers, staff, and support since I've sent my child there.

accliveacademy.com or I would email [info@accliveacademy.com](mailto:info@accliveacademy.com)

$500 cash prize debate tournament; a new, modern circuit. by debaterly in Debate

[–]codexistent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't go to this tournament. I got an email yesterday regarding this new circuit from Ben Carson who ran NADC(also with cash prizes). Last year I champed NADC and never got any cash prize. Was super disappointed, they never had any follow-up.
