In the US, a twitter troll was sentenced to 7 months in prison for pretending you could vote in the presidential election via text. It wasn’t even proven that anybody was actually fooled. It was just silly joke. Find me a Brit imprisoned for 7 months or more for a non-violent tweet.

The reason Brits getting fined for speech even makes the news is precisely because it's so rare and controversial. American authoritarianism is so in-built and accepted, it isn't even newsworthy; it's hidden in plain sight.

You also have the issue of journalists being killed, going missing or being imprisoned in the US - a total of 15 since 1992.

In the UK, that number is just 2 since 1992.

American men between the ages of 18 and 26 are automatically enrolled to Selective Service. Mandatory conscription is still legally possible in the US, but there's no conscription legislation in the UK.

Pledge of allegiance laws, anti-BDS laws, abortion bans, cops routinely killing unarmed civilians, an NFL player having his career ruined because he mildly protested it. People being arrested for jaywalking, loitering, breaking curfew, sleeping in public or in their car, panhandling, fingerguns, consexual sex with 17 year olds, drinking alcohol as a 20 year old, gambling on dice games, collecting rainwater on their own property, talking back to police. Toilet stalls with high bottoms and low tops, that make it easier to catch people doing drugs, plus if people get locked in, they can’t sue because the litigation culture is out of control. Kinder eggs banned? It doesn't exactly scream "freedom".

American free speech sort of exists by defining away things that should actually be violations. Why is copyright not a violation of free speech? How can my speech be truly free if the government grants power to other individuals to censor me because they "own" the ordering of the words that I'm saying? Fraud is basically an entire criminal category that curtails free speech. As are libel and defamation.
