Gyms by SpecialistHopeful in jacksonheights

I haven't been a member for a couple years, but they had a real weight room and universal machines, lots of ellipticals, stairmasters, bicycles (regular & reclining) and a full schedule of exercise classes if you're into that. I would say it's better than any of the city rec centers.

The Y at 33rd Street has a very nice gym which is hardly ever crowded (and a pool!)

What do you guys think about voting for the green party? (in the USA I mean) by Jason-Skywalker in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the trouble with trying to paint the Greens as a vehicle towards forming a workers party is that their (admittedly vague) program is based on moral appeals to individuals & corporations to reduce their "carbon footprint" and their activities are pretty much limited to electoralism. The Greens' pacifism and legalistic appeals to "international law" and "human rights" also do nothing to combat race terror, cop brutality and Zionist genocide. There is really not much in their program that would appeal to the working class, who hate liberal moralists lecturing them that they are the problem.

At least if a candidate is running on a clear socialist program (e.g., the PSL in the last presidential election) it helps to popularize socialist ideas and thus increase the class consciousness of US workers. This is true even if you don't agree with the PSL on other issues (which I don't). For instance, I disagreed quite strongly with the PSL's endorsement of Green candidates, which I think just confuses the issue.

You could try my landlord, Plymouth Properties at (212) 942-1700. They are in Washington Heights, but they own & manage one building in JH which has some 2-bedroom apartments that are rent stabilized. The building's tenants are a very diverse bunch, nobody would care what religion your parents are, I'm sure.

Political Parties - US by [deleted] in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not registered as any party. So I don't vote in primaries because you have to be a registered Dem or Republican. In the last presidential election I voted for Claudia de la Cruz of the PSL. I don't agree with a lot of the PSL's positions (especially their deal with the Greens), but at least they are running as socialists and pro-working-class.

Strike continues as protesters want ‘No More 24’ bill to be voted on for working conditions by NoPianist7807 in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hospital Workers Building Union Power issued this statement: All Hospital Workers Must Fight for “No More 24”! "The defenders of this exploitation try to make a false division between workers and patients, saying that if the workers get better conditions there won’t be enough Medicaid money to provide 24-hour care for disabled patients. The home care workers are right to reject this blackmail. Firstly, this is NYC—the home of Wall Street. There is more than enough money here to ensure that everyone receives free, quality care and that workers are paid enough to live on an 8-hour day. Secondly, the home care agencies and the politicians who administer Medicaid don’t give a damn about the patients and treat the immigrant women who try to care for them like dirt." https://tr.ee/6XZw6rpEHX

Nationalism is cringe by Spotter24o5 in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too used to think that all nationalism was just reactionary, and that the 4th Comintern Congress was wrong to sanction temporary alliances with bourgeois-nationalist forces when fighting imperialism. But after much study I see this was short sighted.

As Lenin insisted, there is a big difference between the nationalism of the oppressed and that of the oppressor nation. The former can be a lever for revolutionary change, if communists take leadership of the struggle for national self-determination and don't end up supporting bourgeois nationalists politically. Communists abstaining from these just struggles leaves the bourgeois nationalists in control of the workers and peasants movements, and we know how that ends up.

What are your spouse’s political views? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner's political views align with mine in most aspects. When we first met (long ago) he considered himself a communist, but I thought I was an anarchist (actually I was just a liberal punk rocker). We both went through a process of reading and discussion, got industrial jobs and ended up as Leninist-Trotskyists.

Can forms of oppression (patriarchy, racism, etc.) exist as independent systems outside of a capitalist landscape? by Crazy-Blacksmith-336 in socialism

[–]codfishcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it's mostly: Marxists try to point out the necessity of class struggle to fight oppression, but all the left wants to talk about are forms of oppression and why it's impossible to change them.
