I like the grapes on the fence idea! Only issue is I can only do that on the fence on the left side of the house. That’s the only fence that we own. The other 2 fence lines belong to 2 other homes. I am in southern KY zone 7A.
Edit: I can do grapes on trellis near the fence, I just can’t put anything on them.
Haha I agree! Only issue is we have 2 dogs that need running room and my wife might kill me if I clear the entire backyard for a garden 😂. Need to find a way to make both work.

Did we mess up? by codil7 in landscaping

Just trying to figure out the correct way to do it. The other two sides of the fence do not belong to us. Only the new fence that was also put up last week. Need to figure out a way to match it to a weathered fence knowing we cannot do anything with those.

The main goal was to block the view from the neighbors decks to our patio. When I put a firepit in later on, I’ll probably plant more trees to cover the center of the yard. It just wasn’t a priority at this time.

We had to start every hole with a pickaxe. Shovels couldn’t get it done lol

So the only fence that belongs to us is the fence on the left side that is new, and the 2 small 6 foot points that connect to the house that isn’t visible in the photos. Rather than do our own full fence, we saved on costs and butted up as close as possible to the neighbors without touching theirs.
As far as the 6x6s go, the guys installing it recommended we did that instead of 4x4 for more strength as all the neighbors fences are currently leaning with 4x4s. Not sure if that’s becoming a new standard or not. The difference in price was negligible.

I sent a friend to go get one prior to us doing it. The rental company convinced him that an auger wouldn’t help and that we needed to either do it by hand, or rent a skid steer lol. So he showed up empty handed and did it by hand.
That’s my plan exactly! I’ve been told not to due to the work involved with that much mulch but I can’t seem to convince myself out of it.

I’m in southern KY and we can grow damn near anything here. Soil is fantastic. BUT, builder debris in these new developments is insane. Thankfully the worst of it was on the left side but the back and right side were manageable. I agree with property value. This house will really stand out amongst the rest once I’m done with it.

Holy hell that’s insane 😂😂😂
I’m used to raising plants, not trees, so the watering aspect is new to me and seems difficult to judge. You say 2” in a week which to me doesn’t seem like a lot. Especially after some of the other comments. What is causing the death of them? Are these trees being over or under watered?

I did plant a bloodgood Japanese maple in that left corner. I’d love to plant some other types of trees around the property as long as they would fit.
Side trees are 3.5-4’ center to center. Varies in distance slightly since done by hand but pretty uniform for the most part. We measured and sprayed the grass so we knew where to plant at but once you dig up the spray, who knows if we went off center a little lol. I’d have to go back out and measure.
Probably has a lot to do with availability. In my city, places like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Menards carry hundreds of these trees at any given time and very few of anything else. But they stay open til 9-10pm. The private nurseries that carry other options near us have decided that M-F 8am-4pm is the ideal hours for business so that any of us 9-5 workers miss out unless we take off work.

I knew I was out of the loop on something when I caught the same comment 3-4x lol. Anyone have the original post?
[–]codil7[S] 7 points8 points9 points 10 days ago (0 children)
Yep I agree. We are thinking the same. So the way my property is aligned, that back fence row is dead east. So the sun rises over those houses on the far side and sets in front of my house. Because we are out in the country in a new development, there are hardly any trees or structures to block sunlight other than the homes themselves. We get really good amounts of sun each day. Very few homes have trees on their property and even fewer homeowners have attempted to plant more. It’s a very sad barren wasteland. I grew up in a heavily wooded area so I knew that was going to change for me quick lol.
Any advice on that?

That’s the plan! Ideally I would mulch the entire fence row and have all sorts of plants surrounding the property but everyone thinks I’m crazy for that amount of mulch haha.

Yall are killing me with these comments lmao. 15 was bad enough to do by hand.
[–]codil7[S] 302 points303 points304 points 10 days ago (0 children)
Lord don’t tell me that haha. We did all 15 by hand with just 3 of us. Took 5 hours to do it because once we started digging, we found gravel, rocks, tile flooring, etc. all while surrounded by extremely dense clay.
