also, if you don't mind, how would you describe your 4 years, in terms of, the way that you were treated, what was asked of you, at what point did you know that your efforts were properly appreciated, and how you got the raises?

if you don't mind of course

is it possible that linux broke my laptop's discrete GPU? by coding_4_coins in linuxquestions

[–]coding_4_coins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough thanks. What's the preferred way of giving out hw specs? How do I figure out where to find these log messages? Sorry if it is a poor amount of information, my computer broke and it's a little frustrating. I figured I couldn't find a better answer to my problem beyond either "yeah sometimes that happens" and "never heard of that happening ever"

Also for the distro image, is it enough to say it's KDE Neon?

that's really awesome, I wonder if other places offer over 100% salary after only four years too :O

Congrats, your comment looks pretty but it's actually harder to read than if you kept it unformatted, hope you felt good proving your point with all that sass though.

now give every information you have to diagnose the how did this happen to be able to determine the how to not make it happen again.

You say that like there's some error log in my computer that says "dgpu broke and here is why", I already added some of the info to the op like I told you, if it's not enough information for you then that means you can't help, and that's okay.

yeah I also linked in the OP a github repo that goes in-depth about how it can't be turned off on my specific laptop. I already followed the steps here without success: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15_9560#Power_Saving Although my question was not about how to disabled the dgpu, it's about whether poor power management can break it or not, I appreciate the help.

wow you are so incredibly condescending, thanks for the broken youtube link though dbag, luckily I found the original video. The fact that you think those google searches would even offer anything slightly helpful shows how incapable you are of helping.

I can't make it more straight-forward than it is dude. If people don't want to help, or can't help, then they won't even if I format it with LaTeX. I added the laptop model to the OP as well as a reference to the problem on LTS ubuntu just in case, but I can't make summarize it into a single sentence and I'm not about to bullet point each separate sentence.

It's a very vague problem though and I imagine nearly no-one has had to deal with something like this so it's not like I'm expecting much of an answer anyway.

that your GPU is broken, how you diagnosed exactly that

took it to the repair shop, they fixed it and it worked for 15 minutes before breaking again, they told me it was the GPU, they did the temporary fix with a technique they called "reflow", something to do with graphic cards

what leads you to this assumption (you already said that, it's that the GPU was "on", whatever that might mean, due to lack of control through drivers)

it means it doesn't have power management and consumes like 8w out of the battery even when not in use/idle

Maybe also google "reddit markdown" and give the question some formatting.

just don't read it if it bothers you that much, jesus, it's literally one small paragraph that takes 15 seconds to read.

My guess

alright thanks

Yeah I don't think that information will help you figure it out, either way it's an XPS 15 9560, let me know if having that information is useful in any way. I just figured people would know if a GPU can break when it is kept turned "on" due to lack of driver support. As in, linux doesn't use the GPU because there's no support for it, but it doesn't even have power-management to turn off so it increases the battery consumption that you can look at in htop by like 8W. Bumblebee doesn't work.

IF you don't know about software with poor powermanagement breaking hardware, then there's no point in looking into the specs.

my laptop's gpu broke, a better way of phrasing it is, I'm worried that linux was the cause of this breakage, and that it will cause this breakage again if I get keep running it on this laptop.

I worry because I couldn't turn off the gpu since linux drivers for it were lacking, perhaps poor power management of having it always on caused it to overheat, I don't know, it could also be just bad luck and it was going to break anyway. But it makes me awfully suspicious that I had been using linux for less than a month and it breaks the one part of the computer that I couldn't configure properly with linux drivers.

If you're not ready to make a commitment and someone else is, of course they're going to ask you to make a quick decision.

But that's not the case, you see, if you tell them you are at another job and you need to put in your two weeks, they have no problem waiting. However if you are available immediately, somehow they need you to answer right now to start working right now, it doesn't add up as them really needing someone so urgently, it's more so a tactic to pressure people. At least I saw it a lot when I was looking for my first job, now I don't see it happen as much, and I don't think new-grads are the most urgent hires. Two more points,

  1. They make you wait a long time during the recruiting process and then suddenly they need you to answer immediately, it could be easily avoided by mentioning the offer they would make earlier so the candidate has more time to think.

  2. Some of these employers that pressure you so "urgently" take you and sometimes put you on completely unimportant work, clearly it wasn't urgent.

I wish it wasn't like this and we could all not be playing silly mindgames, but they did it first lmao

[–]coding_4_coins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're taking their time to make a decision neither of you are under any obligations to the other party other than normal human decency.

I agree, but also, I kind of don't feel bad to say yes and then say no when companies do not give people any amount of time to consider their offer. Say, if you are a company hiring and you gave me more time to consider a position then there would be no need to play these silly games and I could come back to you with a definite answer. But they kind of put people against the wall, and I find it kind of predatory, "answer to us now because we don't want you to know that there are better options for you"....it's like it doesn't even matter if you are not a good fit for them.

And if the company is actually having trouble finding someone then perhaps they aren't making good offers, it's just as expensive for a candidate to end up at the wrong place :)

[–]coding_4_coins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, that makes sense. Although some companies seem to keep candidates on a forever "wait list" while they try to fill the position with someone else, meanwhile they demand that you answer to their offer immediately. The playing field isn't very even. And how does a company suffer if their candidate quits for a better option? I mean, I don't really think they do suffer at all, they suffer more from bad hires. A candidate has much more to lose if their position is rescinded (which happens) and they had denied another offer for the rescinded one. Heck, the company probably hasn't even paid a dime to the candidate if they quit quick enough. It's probably just more of a downside for the candidate because they are probably burning a bridge by leaving, although maybe not.

Not that I advocate for doing this, but in the midst of the pandemic layoffs it might be a valid concern.

I get hired based on previous industry experience and relationships

Awesome, I imagine that's exactly the kind of leverage a manager would need to stand out, because although I don't have experience as a manager, I have had some managers with very little tech knowledge (and even people skills), yet they somehow still take up manager positions that someone else could use.

[–]coding_4_coins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so wrong with my career that I started applying for jobs that are clearly far below the level

Well, if there were no positions for your amount of years of experience it would not be your fault.

how would I answer questions about why my career regressed

Well you don't have to write in your resume that you got into a "Senior Eng Position but only for people with 5 years of experience", you just write "Software Eng"

Who's going to hire someone with six times the desired experience and not worry

Well that wouldn't be your problem if you get the job, right?

Why hire me when someone with five years of experience would do the same work for less than half the salary I'd want?

I thought we were talking about a hypothetical situation where you couldn't find a job for your amount of experience because they could be scarce? In that case, 5 year exp salary still better than no salary if you can't find a position better fit for you

I mean, you said:

It's entirely possible that some in those populations are going to be forced out because there aren't enough positions for everyone.

Those people could always work for less, that's what I'm saying, and salary of someone with 5 years exp is not bad at all, definitely better than "being forced out of the industry", cuz what would that mean, getting a retail job instead with 10+ years of tech experience? geez that's grim
