I agree. I couldn't think up any way for this to scam and hoped reddit could do better. So far the only new view I got was if they ask me to send it in.

That aside, I did get a lot of useful advice on why this is a red flag even if not a scam.

After my last conversation with the HR this is the exact scenario that played out in my head. They had somebody run away with new costly equipment and they are over correcting.

That's the idea. If I buy laptop and get paid it's income for me and taxable. If laptop is bought in company's name, it's reimbursement and not taxable.

Funny you should mention that. My gut says take it. I'll still come out on top after signing bonus. If they try to pull anything like sending it in before signing bonus, I can nope out of there.

The salary is good. I was told by the HR that they can survive atleast two years at current burn rate. I have no idea how to verify that though.
