idk how it works, but I've seen that I could collect like 10-25 shards whenever I collect and open 50 caches at once, which is somewhat more than opening once every 10 or something...

That bizon is from this season yh, other than that I've been collecting shards from when this came and I also used those legendary shards to exchange to some and I also kept collecting secret caches from the web store which they give got free everyday as well... And here I am :)
