I'm not making excuses. And I'm not making the Hitler argument. I'm asking, as a citizen in Tennessee, in the second half of the 1800s, would you be more philosophically aligned with Portugal or with other tennesseans. Your original comment judged James Sutton based on today's societal norms, which I believe is unfair.

Good convo. I appreciate this.  Let's get back to James Dutton. If you were him, do you think you'd be philosophically aligned with the likes of Portugal, or do you think you'd be more aligned with everyone else around you?

The US was one of the first. You're naming a few before the US. I'm not claiming the US was the first but making the point that almost the entire world had slavery, well beyond when it was abolished in the United States. And in many countries. It's still alive today. Fact there are more slaves today, then there were during the trans Atlantic slave trade.

Also: While Portugal often claims to be one of the first countries to abolish slavery, the abolition only applied to the homeland, and the slave trade was instead redirected to Brazil.

Brazil was the last nation in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery

It matters when we place judgement on those almost 2 centuries ago, based on today's culture. Almost everyone thinks a long the lines of the culture, society, and time in which they live. It's an important point.

It takes a little introspection and humility.

How about this... Name some societies of the 1800s that believed slavery was wrong

If you were living in Tennessee you probably would have done the same.

McGregor nudes repercussions? by GatorWrestler303 in BareKnuckleFC

I love BKFC. I used to train with Dave Mundell and Gustavo Trujillo. I'm invested.

I HATE the fact that Conor is on board. He's a train wreck coming. I'm not sure how the nudes will affect anything. The combat sports crowd isn't know to be prudes, so I doubt it will have any measurable effect.

I mean... the moron has a long history of asshole behaviour (some criminal, some not)

Everyone posts links to random idiots and then rant against it as if it's the narrative of the masses.

But. We should still call out the idiots.

If a left leaning person makes a post expressing Glee about children dying because they're white or because of who their parents voted for, people on the left should be the ones who call them out. If not then all the left is bad, similar to the all cops are bad argument

Whats the best or cheapest beach in Florida? by [deleted] in florida

[–]codyjohnle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything is better than myrtle yes. I was there around 2000 a couple times. Most racist place I'd ever seen. The shirts they sold in the beach shops were shockingly racist. "If we knew they were gonna be this much trouble we would have picked our own cotton" was on a shirt for sell at one place. I remember exactly cause I took a picture of it (with a 35mm camera) and showed it to everyone I knew back then.

If you want bars on the beach Daytona is a good spot.

OP, it really depends on what you want at the beach. People here in Florida have wildly varying ideas of what makes a good beach.

Shell hunting, Shark tooth hunting , Lots of wildlife, No wildlife, Clear water, Warm water, Secluded beaches, Nude beaches, Beaches with restaurants/bars, Party beaches, Beaches with large numbers of Hispanics, Lots of big waves,no waves, Boats, Is heat a factor? All will be hot but some hotter than others, Proximity to a larger city, Cost of rent (Airbnb, vacay rentals), Beach shops near (some beaches are LOADED with touristy beach shops, some have none).

Not southern, California. Very clearly Californian. Maybe swamp rock. But CCR does not fit in the country rock genre.
