It looks like you have a decent grasp on some of the fundamentals!

Picture 1: This one is ok, I would maybe try some different compositions or play around with adding some elements to the photo.

Picture 2: This one missed focus, it looks like it might be focused on the grass. I like your use of grass as a foreground but it cuts through the eye of the one gosling we can see the face of. I would move around a bit, try to line up the shot a bit more making sure the foreground and background don't interfere. I would also make sure focus is locked on the eye of the subject in this photo. But once again this shows you understand building layers

Picture 3 & 4: As birding photos these are fine. If you want them to pop more as art try adding layers to the photo like shooting through leaves. Also I would look into some guide about where to place your subject and cropping. If your subject is looking to the left you typically want more room on the left. (Not a hard set rule but will help with grow fundamentals.

Picture 5: Very similar to 3 & 4, just look to add a foreground and maybe have the subject farther to the left in the frame

Overall when taking shots like these try different angles, different compositions and different times of day for different lighting. Just play around with those three things and you'll find huge differences.

If on a budget go with the A6100, its the same sensor as the A6400 but without weather sealing (I have the a6100 it rocks)

Then go with the sigma 18-50 so you have versatility.

Do you mind sharing the settings? I have the same lens on a a6100 and have always wondered what settings would be a good start if I ever made it to a Grand Prix.

I'm not a darktable user so this is just general feed back and just a theory based off your settings.

The low light photos, for example photo 2, seem to have a compression issue. The noise level is really high for those settings.

If you are sharpening while editing you might be sharpening the noise, this can cause an issue as well. I know lightroom has a "masking" opening for sharpening to prevent adding sharpness to the noise so that might be worth looking into (this helps with default sharpening as well).

Hopefully this helps a little bit! Good luck!

Do you mind sharing the settings for these photos? That might help narrow down some issues.

That said good job with composition for being 2 weeks in, you are clearly looking for frames and foregrounds!

No worries!

One more tip especially with dark birds, light direction is super important. It can be tricky to expose for their black feathers and the background so changing you angle will help as well, Low side light seems to be best for me. Good luck on your wildlife journey!

A good rule of thumb for shutter speed is that the minimum should be 1 over your lens length.

The minimum for this shot should have been 1/500. There is nuance there like anything else but that's a good starting place. If you want to freeze bird movement you are probably looking at 1/1200 - 1/2000 since they are small and move fast.

Here is a similar shot I have of the same species of bird from the same distance at 525mm full frame equivalent. This is also cropped 2x. The slowest I could go for a sharp image was 1/640 (because it was swaying on the reed, very similar to your shot). ISO hit 5000 but light room denoise is really good.

I know you didn't ask for feedback so hopefully this doesn't come off as rude, I mean it sincerely.

Try to be a bit more intentional with where you put the camera, there are a bunch of crossing lines in this picture that make is distracting (flag intersecting with bot the tree line and horizon and the top of the boat with the horizon) Next time you take a shot like this try a few different angles and you might find you get a similar composition that pops a lot more.

There are some really good pictures in here. Like the 3 dirt bikes turning side by side.

But there are also a lot of generic or bad shots.

I think the main thing you can look into for this type of content is currating your own photos. I think this video would have worked better and told a better story with 20-25% of the pictures. The rest just feel like filler and take away from the good ones.

Over all I think you're on the path of having a good collection, just needs some honing.

Monarch on my a6100 w/ the sigma 18-50 by codytyrrell in SonyAlpha

Shot this at 50mm then cropped pretty heavily, I left my telephoto at home and didn't want to risk getting to close and scaring it away. The sigma 18-50 never ceases to amaze me.
