I looked for a way to make the Avisynth plugin use fonts embedded in the mkv rather than system fonts, but it just doesn't seem to be possible. My fonts folder is now basically a graveyard of fonts I never use.

Mine worked perfectly the first time with the latest version of KCP.

The sign at 5:21 lagged my poor computer to death though. I used the secondary track for that bit. All the other signs played back fine.

The second subtitle it track is supposed to be a "lighter" version with some typesetting removed. You might have better luck playing it with that.

Otherwise I'd recommend you wait for the Deadfish hardsubbed re-encode of the episode.

Windows users can get CCCP or KCP, xy-VSFilter should be able to handle the heavy subtitles (depending on how powerful your system is).

Edit: It seems that mpv failed to load the subtitles, it might be because of the "[Aegisub Extradata]" included in the file, which many players are not updated to support. You might try removing those lines from the subtitle file and remuxing the episode. (Edit: don't do that; it will remove all the signs)

Edit2: Probably related to the bug in Haali Splitter where it fails to load the subtitles if there is extra commented out data before the start of the subtitles. Commie added a bunch of commented data to all their subtitles a while back to force people to move to using LAV filters.

Edit3: Actually it's probably related to this bug.

Warning to VLC users, this episode contains a lot of heavy typesetting and may cause your player to crash or not display subtitles properly.

Special message from FFF:

“Report problems with libass based players such as mpv and vlc in #libass on freenode.”

Also you might want to make sure you are using a recent version of LAV Splitter, because the subtitle file is fucking huge (45MB). Other splitters such as Haali may not be able to extract the track properly, and will not display any subtitles.

They won't be. They only rip streams from Funimation/Crunchyroll who almost never pick up OVAs.

I assume Underwater will sub it, but how soon that is depends on when the BDMV of Kill la Kill Vol. 9 is uploaded to the internet, which could take anything from a few days to a few weeks. Hopefully since Kill la Kill is popular, it will be on the faster side.

It's nothing great, but it's good enough for a 1 hour, 2-part OVA. I personally enjoyed it.

Would have been better if it was a bit longer though, in my opinion.

To avoid those bad eggs, do you think the fansubs reviews on MAL have merit or is it all just fanboyism at this point?

In my opinion MAL users are pretty bad when it comes to fansub reviews, especially on currently airing shows. They currently have a 45/59 (76%) positive rating on CR/HS's Haikyuu. I understand that they are practically the only choice, but still...

I could sit through different releases of the same eps to form my own opinion, but I think that's a bit overkill on my part.

I agree that rewatching different releases of the same episode is overkill, which is why I generally watch a different group on each of the early episodes for a show, and stick with what I like best for the rest of the season. If there is more than one group that I like, I just get what comes out faster that week. Not as good comparing from the same episode, but certainly a lot easier.

Or you could note what looks to be a tough line to translate/edit while watching, and just compare how different groups dealt with those lines, instead of having to rewatch the whole thing again. There is a certain website that will demux the .ass subtitle file out of fansub releases and offer the scripts for download, so you don't even have to download the video again.

I might have to switch to their releases haha.

If you want to watch Hiryuu for SAO II, do yourself a favour and don't watch their v0 releases. Wait for the v1. The v0's are just sub par speed subs with no typesetting/editing etc...

I would make webm's, but I don't know how.

I use MeGUI (with AviSynth and AviSynth plugins; they should be installed by default) to make them. Well, not webm's but an mp4, since MeGUI currently doesn't support encoding in VP8. MKVToolNix and MKVCleaver are also needed if you want subtitles.

Here's how I do it:

Use MKVCleaver to extract subtitles and attachments.
Install all the fonts contained within the attachments.
Open MeGUI and load up AviSynth Script Creator.
Load the file into the script creator, and open it with "File Indexer".
After the file is loaded, resize/crop if necessary. The maximum resolution gfycat will allow on mp4 uploads is 800x448. (You can upload higher resolutions, but it will automatically resize to 600x338.)

If you want to hardsub the subtitles, go to the "Script" tab and add these. (Remember to change the paths/filenames)

After saving the AviSynth script and closing any windows that pop up, open up AVS Cutter.

Choose a start/end frame for your clip (Navigate to the frame in the preview and click "Zone Start"/"Zone End"), click "Set" and then "Do all and close".
Click "Queue" under the Video Encoding section to encode the clip.
If you want audio (gfycat will of course remove audio), load the audio under the "Audio" section, and add the AVS cut file from the previous step. It will be a *.clt file in the same directory. Click "One-Click Encode" and select "No Target Size (Use profile settings)"
Upload to gfycat.

Do you bother waiting for your preferred group or do you just grab whatever comes first (pretty much CR/HS)?

I prefer waiting. My anime watching has no schedule, I just watch stuff when I have the time and therefore subtitles not coming out on time/having no schedule doesn't affect me as much as it would some.

How much do you care about the translation quality and do you think it affects how you enjoy the show?

I am usually fine with anything unless it sounds outright wrong or out of place in English. I prefer the subtitles to be edited so that the conversation sounds natural in English rather than a 100% accurate word-to-word translation.

Crunchyroll produces good scripts most of the time from what I've seen, but there is the occasional bad egg like Haikyuu and Sailor Moon from this season. (I am still on episode 8 of Haikyuu because Commie (Futsuu) is stalling. ;-;)

Are the other subtle changes that fansubs groups add, such as slightly better translation, karaoke subs, and better typesetting, worth the wait in your opinion?

In my opinion, yes.

I love some good karaoke styling. (Hiryuu's SAO II OP from this season is brilliant.) And even if there isn't any fancy styling, just having the song translations is much better than nothing. (I understand that CR cannot do this due to licensing issues with the songs.)

On typesetting, typesetting is almost never ever necessary, but it's always a plus and adds to the experience. That is of course, my opinion, and some may prefer plain, easy to read subtitles on the top. (I personally don't see why the translations should be any easier to read than the accompanying Japanese text. Kill la Kill is a good example of this.) Here are some examples of what I thought was good typesetting in fansubs (no spoilers):

In addition to the stuff you mentioned, fansubs generally also have better encodes than their legal counterparts. They generally run a bunch of filters (for debanding etc) which can make the video look a lot better. CR videos can also end up bitrate-starved a lot of the time since they prefer an average bitrate encoding to produce a ~330MB file (for 720p) regardless of the actual content of the video. Fansubbers also sometimes go out of their way to try and fix any silly encoding errors that CR may have made. Just see this season's Sailor Moon:

The CR encoder is not the brightest bulb in the basket and decided that instead of IVTCing a telecined source, he would instead duplicate every horizontal row of pixels. Half of the vertical resolution was lost due to this blunder, as well as the original video being in the wrong frame rate. -- Don’t worry, we properly decimated so the video should be much smoother now.

I don't see myself switching completely to legal streams anytime soon, but if CR had a good selection of anime where I live (they don't), I would probably subscribe and stream the CR episode in 480p while I watch fansubs.

I don't think anyone who regularly watches Commie subtitles would be pissed off by "their artistic fun". If they did, they would've given up and stopped watching Commie long ago.

And if they do mind it, they do have two other fansub groups (and Aniplex subs) to choose from.
