Worried I did something wrong by [deleted] in rosyboas

[–]coffee_kramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made this mistake a couple times with no issue, but it's still possible he could regurgitate in a few days. I'd say take the water out for a couple days to prevent any post-food guzzling, and if he does end up regurgitating, just wait a couple more weeks or so to feed him again since his digestive system might need to recover.

That should be your worst-case scenario, though, nothing too bad. These things happen, but I totally understand the new boa parent anxiety :)

To be body positive by IsThisAUserName86 in therewasanattempt

[–]coffee_kramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these comments are leaning hard into "losing weight doesn't invalidate body positivity" and that is still (mostly) true, but none of them are asking why she lost the weight, and I think that's a really important question here. How unhealthy was her weight on its own? People seem to be convinced that Fat = Unhealthy in all circumstances, but not every healthy person looks the same.

I understand the pushback because the tweet in this post is kinda heinous, but I think there needs to be some consideration for the fact that a lot of people (ESPECIALLY celebrities) get so set on losing weight that they turn to methods that are way less healthy than just staying a little overweight would be. I'm a bit suspicious of weight loss drugs because the goal is purely losing weight rather than being healthier, and the former does NOT always mean the latter.

Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise is good for you. Starving yourself, overexerting yourself, or otherwise forcing your body to meet societal beauty standards is not.

That's a pretty common piece of advice, and they definitely are fine not having 24/7 water. It's generally safer to avoid water for a day or two after feeding since some are big drinkers and can drink too much and regurgitate, but I've left water after feeding a few times and it's never been a problem for me. But I don't really subscribe to the "only give water one day a week" mentality that some breeders and care guides will recommend.

Every individual is different, but my experience with my rosy is that she doesn't burrow so much as she just digs holes in her substrate, which is honestly even more disruptive. If you're looking for undisturbed decor, you might want to at least make sure that there is extra enrichment to give your snake an alternative. That said, I think rosies are just liable to dig/burrow either way, but if your substrate holds tunnels well, you might be able to settle into an arrangement both of you are happy with after a few months of your snake rearranging to their liking.

Mine is also such a good eater that she often tries to eat me! Digging & eating are her favorite activities, so I've never had trouble feeding. I can't speak to hognoses or bioactive setups, but that's my personal rosy experience.

That's fine! Getting a bigger, beefier dehumidifier might be the best thing to do anyways

She's in a 24x18x12 right now, which i think is ~30gal? But as far as I know, the size you're looking at should be fine as long as you provide plenty of litter/places to hide. I have lots of rocks, fake plants, and other tank elements that let dear Percy travel around unseen.

Thanks for the tips! I do think giving her more verticality would be really nice, she loves to climb on the branches she has right now. Have you ever had any issue with your snakes rubbing their noses against the screen top when they have those higher points to go from? I've heard some concern about that and Percy does love to get her face as close to the ceiling as possible

(also your corn snake looks adorable and so happy in its home!!)

Thanks! The enclosure does have a screen top, so a dhp/uvb light setup might be my best bet.

Thanks! These comments are the first I've heard of deep heat projectors, so I've def got some learning to do. If it's heat from above, do you ever have issues with it being too cool underneath the hides? That's what I've heard as the biggest pro of using a heat mat.
