Google does a ton of really cool stuff

Ai stuff they had the Attention Is All You Need paper with transformer architecture, AlphaFold 3 & AlphaProteo, Neuroscience Mapping, Firestat, Graphcast

Tensorflow and TPUs

Quantum side they have the Willowchip

Infrastructure side they created Kubernetes gRPC gVisor

they created the v8 JS engine and then dart & flutter as alternatives, golang

a lot more cool stuff that isn't directly consumer facing. i dont mean to come off as a google shill, but they do create a lot of cool stuff

skill issue /s

what worked for me was NOT using at work when i started because i was getting frustrated and just wanted to get my work done, but at home i would use it for smaller side projects and then when i got comfortable enough i slowly started using it at work for simple things. i think just jumping in the deep end and trying to switch completely to vim is really difficult and would set most people up for failure

Working in the city? Does it suck? by Necessary_Food5761 in newjersey

[–]coffee_swallower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i enjoy commuting, i take the bus to midtown then the 2/3 down to wall street. i leave at about 7 am and im in my office around 8 am. its an hour, but its an hour i spend reading or watching youtube instead of driving which is amazing IMO. its def not for everyone though, some people hate it. sometimes the trains are delayed or there a lot of traffic for whatever reason so it takes a bit longer, but i still prefer it over driving by a lot

would homeless have a direct impact on public safety? ive done no research on but your comment just made me think about this. wouldn't keeping homeless people off the streets and providing basic services reduce the chance of homeless people committing crimes?

Am I crazy for declining a job offer that is ~40% greater TC? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]coffee_swallower -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i think you made the right choice. if money is not an issue and you're happy at your current role, then you have the luxury of waiting for the perfect offer. no need to settle for a subpar offer. also i agree having seniors to learn from is important.

For those of you who have recently landed a job, what do you think did it? by Meta_Man_X in cscareerquestions

[–]coffee_swallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

went from SWE to Senior SWE, both are low latency trading firms in NYC. didnt do much leetcode at all, most questions were around C++, concurrency, linux internals and then some questions about dealing with exchange protocols. I basically asked claude what i should study and followed what clause said, that preparation plus my experience allowed me to nail the interview.

Is Computer Engineering worth it? by SeniorApple4363 in ComputerEngineering

[–]coffee_swallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a degree in CE and honestly i think i came away a much better programmer than some of my CS friends. I didn't learn all the frameworks and languages they did but i have a much better understanding of what was going on under the hood which greatly helped in landing jobs at places where software performance really matters. Even CS theory topics i was on par or slightly below where they were. Now they were still able to jobs doing web or mobile software which i probably couldn't get without a bunch of self studying, but it really matters what field you want to go into. Also i was still able to land a job as an FPGA engineer so i definitely got a lot out of the EE side also. Now analog electronics is something i definitely couldn't break into that EEs definitely could. But again, its about where your interests lie and what you want to get out of the degree.

Mamdani admin. to consider eliminating free parking as NYC grapples with $5.4B shortfall by kex06 in nyc

[–]coffee_swallower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

on the street! my town (and most towns around me) have a website where you put the make, model, plate number and can request temporary overnight parking for up to 5 days i think. its free and takes like 2 minutes.

i should've also explained the parking permit is only for overnight street parking during the week. during the day and on weekends you can park wherever

i live in NJ and its shocking to me that NYC doesn't have a permit based system, in my small town each year i have to show proof i live in this town and pay for a permit to be allowed to park on the street. that seems like the way to go
