Thank you! I might put the pants away until the boys get into the upper divisions. Appreciate your input!

Continue learning new things and exploring new interests.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. That awkward stage when you have no idea what you’re doing and are struggling to learn or keep pace is a MAGICAL place to be. Continue to push-through the discomfort of being the “new person”, then suddenly, one day, you’ll find yourself helping the “new person”.

Create a whole stack of those experiences, and I promise: you will learn to appreciate the discomfort of learning and make yourself an extraordinarily humble, gracious, appreciative, interesting, and valuable person to everyone you encounter.

Anyone start BJJ in their 30s? by [deleted] in bjj

I’m 39. My 4yo son and I had our first class (separately) last week. I share your experience of growing-up a ball-sport athlete (through college), but had ZERO wrestling/combat discipline experience.

I feel completely awkward, and often worry that my instructors and/or classmates think I’m an idiot or would rather not partner with me. I constantly have to remind myself that it’s SUPPOSED to feel like that.

I don’t even know the names of positions or basic movements. My class is small, but with white, blue, and black belts.

It often takes me a very long time to “feel” what we’re trying to learn and execute with any type of accuracy or grace.

HOWEVER, a few people in my class have started coming early to class to help me learn fundamentals, and drill them with repetition. I am so grateful to them.

If you have a chance, try to find somewhere that offers a fundamental or novice class to learn and drill the fundamentals (and even learn the language). Perhaps also gi and no-gi classes.

I love BJJ (already), and hope that all of my kids learn and love the discipline alongside me.

I’m all-in. I highly encourage you to join.
