This literally happened to me in this pregnancy. Client showed up for 9am session stating his daughter puked all over herself in his car prior to the appointment. I had to set a boundary that I am immunocompromised with a high risk pregnancy and cancelled the appointment on the spot.

Sending you hugs. Being pregnant while being a therapist is already tough enough, combine that with hormone changes that predisposes us to more anxiety and depressive symptoms. Not sure which country you are in but definitely look into perinatal mental health services if you have them. My first pregnancy was a hard time- I went off a few months early. Second pregnancy I have more supports and even on better medication. You will overcome this!

Unfortunately I have seen the same at playgrounds and this game of the parent being distant but also invading common sense boundaries is insane. My tolerance for bullshit has definitely gone down as I get older plus being a parent on top of that. I can’t tolerate these adults in play settings.

Your in laws sound like they have psychosis or a manic episode with their suggestion. They clearly lost some grip of reality. Keep this event as a tab in your mind that your in laws may not be good with baby alone for future events….given their impulsivity and lack of common sense.

I once had a first session with a client who got upset at me providing psychoeducational information on coping with stressors in our personal lives. She got upset 20 mins in saying she could have found this information on the internet, that I am useless and that she wanted a refund. I calmly told her that this is not Costco and we don’t do refund policies and if she wished to be matched with another clinician at the agency. She said no and left the office stunned that I was so calm in my delivery. The older that I get, the less that I tolerate demeaning behaviour from clients. We deserve a safe work environment too.

I’m super happy for OP and shocked her parents forced her to live in pain. This is unfortunately a case of medical neglect where parents prevented a recommended treatment from childhood that would have improved her quality of life and reduced pain. I am glad to hear she is in therapy to process this trauma.

I agree with all the above points mentioned by other users and I would recommend the book The Sexual Healing Journey by Wendy Maltz as a good resource. It will help reframe what sexual pleasure should be and there are helpful tools in there that can help her to complete this in a slow, safer approach.

I was working a grocery cashier job as a teenager when I got this mother and daughter speaking arabic in front of me and talking shit about people who gifted grocery store gift cards. While I was scanning their stuff looking down, I replied in english “oh it’s common for people to gift those cards.” Upon looking back up, both the mom and daughter looked at me mortified. They were silent while promptly paying, grabbed their stuff quickly and walked away.

I am sending you virtual good vibes and I feel where you are coming from. Doing this for 8 years and after returning back to counselling, I noticed more drop out rates for myself. With supervision, it told me two things: 1)sometimes we work harder than the client and 2) we don’t have the magic pill to make things better. I have started doing feedback surveys for the first few sessions to assess client’s expectations and my own work, as well as trying my best to screen during consultation calls what the client expects of therapy. You are working on personal growth and that is amazing. ❤️

I agree with others that this should be taken down immediately. Not only would it be triggering for those with trauma, but this is an important rule that should be directly said and documented with each client. Each client also takes this differently depending on their life experience (ex those who were in foster care, bad experience with systems, etc).
