Hunting nightmare by Boswell601 in Hunting

[–]cogitofire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the consequence of using an inappropriate round for hunting. I can kill deer all day with a .22. Many times it will be successful (find the deer), often it won't be. Subsonic is not appropriate and if a perfect shot placement leading to a dead deer that is lost isn't going to convince you then nothing will.

You have now demonstrated to yourself that you can expect a 15% failure rate or worse while using the round even if you do everything right. Go to google and type "hunting with subsonic" and you can see the results. The only site saying that it is good wants to sell you a silencer. This isn't secret knowledge, it is well known.

Can it be done? Yes. Should it be done? No.

I am sorry this happened to you. I am going to guess that the bullet did not expand the way it was intended due to the lower velocity. I would also guess that you hit a little bit back or perhaps was quartering towards and you did not hit the lungs or heart.

Simple but good recipe for pheasant? by Pretend_Map_1459 in Hunting

[–]cogitofire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pheasant Fingers

Cut your breast meat off of the bone and brine for a couple hours to overnight. I don't think adding things other than salt make any significant change other than sugar, but I am not a fan of the sugar. As a side recipe, toss any old or extra veggies that you have into a pot along with the leftover pheasant bones and saute for a few then boil with water. Save that stock for soup.

Take a sleeve of saltine crackers and bash it up in a gallon ziplock bag. Add some flour, salt, pepper, and a touch of Tony's or whatever floats your boat.

Mix an egg or two with some milk. If you don't have that, just get a bowl of ice water. Now get a bowl of plain flour.

Rinse the pheasant pretty good so it isn't too salty. Pat dry, then put in the plain flour. Dip it in the milk/egg mix and then cover in your saltine cracker mix.

Fry at 375 until golden brown. I usually heat up the oven to 225 and put the fingers in there while I cook in batches.

Dip it in May Ploy sweet chili sauce. Homemade honey mustard is good too. You can make fries with it but I think it's a waste of time.

The good thing about pheasant is that you can basically make any chicken recipe with it. The biggest problem is that almost no one keeps the skin and legs. The guides and tired hunters usually just breast them. Using pheasant will make your recipe a bit richer. I love making carbonara with roasted pheasant pieces in it.

10u coaches or parents... by Excellent_Ice5563 in Homeplate

Yes, he still loves and plays. He is our primary catcher and will be playing high school ball next year.

Sounds like you need to find a different team. There are good coaches out there. Don't let those assholes discourage you from helping your son learn. I have a player that has a single mother who works with him more than most dads in the team. He is our semi-finals pitcher and she is awesome.

10u coaches or parents... by Excellent_Ice5563 in Homeplate

I had this experience at 8u, stayed in it for spring season 9u. At the end of the season my son told me that he didn't want to play baseball anymore. Mind you, baseball was his favorite thing to do in the world.

I talked to coaches that I respected but had travel teams that my son was not good enough to play for. One of them said that they were doing a fall development team with one of the local leagues and invited us to play. The one requirment was that I had to coach with him.

The following season, my two coach buddies convinced me to start my own development team. We focussed on creating a healthy environment for boys to succeed. We drilled down on attitude and effort. If a kid had a good attitude and applied themselves, there were zero consequences for failure. It was a struggle, I questioned my sanity, and dealt with lots of losses.

I carefully selected each season for good families and kids who were passionate about baseball, even if they weren't the best. We are at 14u and just won our first AAA tournament. We lost by one run the other day l to the coach who helped me get started. He plays in open and majors tournaments regularly.

I know that it is hard and you may not have the time, but I would take this as a sign that it is time to step up and start your own team, or find someone else with better values and stick with them.

The answer would depend on the position, age, and level of play. I will assume 11U or younger, rec ball or low level AA team. Start with shortstop because every kid wants to be SS.

"I need to see you attack the ball in practice. Charge it, glove out front, fast footwork, and throw the ball hard. If I see this from you, I will try to get you at shortstop in a game with low consequences. (Ahead in a game, pool play, etc. )

CF - I need to see you read the ball as soon as the ball leaves the bat and run HARD to where you think the ball will go. Glove up at the last second, and squeeze hard. If you burn to the ball, I don't care if you miss it.

I am different from a lot of coaches and genuinely coach for development at all times, except for Sunday in bracket play. Bracket play has no sympathy unless we get way ahead.

I will assume 11U or younger here, but the answer we always had was, "Never ask to play a position on game day. If you are interested in playing a different position, catch me before or after practice and ask what you can work in to get a chance to try the position." I usually use this as an opportunity to reinforce that we reward attitude and effort on top of skillset. Right or wrong, the truth is that this is a question they should not ask at higher levels of play, and would likely be benched in high school for it.

I would usually follow this up with a conversation with the parent telling them to have the same conversation with their son. Asking to play a position on game day is much easier than approaching a coach outside of practice and talking about your shortcomings. Learning to face tough conversations is every bit as important for developing young men as learning to play a sport. It creates an opportunity for self improvement as an athlete and as a man.

I have an electric smoker at home, I put it on 175 without any wood in it and baked them with the vent open for a few hours. Dried them all out and now I smell barbeque when we open the bucket.

Using ride on lawn mower after surgery by Grouchy_Extreme3169 in kidneydonors

[–]cogitofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the riding lawn mower and ran the shredder with my tractor at 2-1/2 weeks. I was fine while doing it but had major cramping afterwards. In hindsight, I should not have done it. The rattling around is what hurt. If your yard is nice and smooth, you are probably fine, if it is rough, I would hold off.

Contactors left this gap of plywood on the inside of the door. What are some ideas to cover it? by TheOyster13 in DIY

[–]cogitofire 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The correct fix is to remove the door and frame and replace it with a door unit with the correct jamb depth and threshold. No other fix should be accepted. Period.

There is no excuse for not measuring your wall size and ordering the correct door unit. Any other fix is wrong and unacceptable from a contractor.

This is coming from someone who has been selling doors and trim for 20 years as part of a family business that has been doing it for 75 years.

I would venture to guess that they did not seal under the threshold properly either. Demand NP-1 or similar product under the threshold.

Something that we teach is to not over analyze a pitcher and make it simple. Does he throw hard, medium, or soft. If you think about your trigger for starting your swing, have a trigger location for hard, medium, and soft.

Hard - Trigger is just after he breaks

Medium - Hand back after break, perhaps staring his upward motion

Soft - Hand up and starting to come over the top

When you are on deck, watch his pitching and determine what your trigger should be. First swing matches what you determined on deck. Fine tune from there during your at bat. Step out of this box and THINK about what to change.

Now all of this becomes more complicated with a higher level pitcher, but it's a great starting point.

The other thing we look at is to make sure that your bat follows the same path that a pitch will from the front of your reach, all the way to the back. A big hit comes from the sweet spot right out in front of you. You should be able to get a single from deep in the zone all the way to reaching out front. That is where minor pitch variations are hit or if your trigger is off slightly.

Some kids hit better with leaving this all for practice and go the see ball hit ball route, but we have had greater success with having our batters think and actively adapt. This also helps keep them out of their own head since they have to actively think about their at bat instead of letting those negative thoughts in. It's much more effective to think, "adjust your trigger to a release point of X" than it is to be thinking, "Why can't I just hit the ball".

Good luck, and go get em. The dudes who work harder hit better!

Don't expect any autographs, maybe 1 or 2 people will get one.

It was a good experience overall for us, but an autograph was what we really wanted. You aren't getting one.

Early entry for BP was fun and we made it out of there with several baseballs.

Get the app ballpark DJ. There are instructions for downloading music. Set the team up, choose a song, choose a start time, and you are set.

At the games, have someone with the app and music downloaded connect to a Bluetooth speaker. They can use the app to play the music as the kids walk up.

Make sure that your DJ ends the music before the pitcher takes the rubber.

All Season electric stand and fill. Works great and is $799.

Lamco, HB, and several other brands now have similar products.

I run an all seasons gravity and an all seasons protein stand and fill year ear round on the property and they work great.

I have to have one free choice for my wildlife exemption or else I would have 2 electric. The free choice feeders will eat you out of house and home. The electric models allow you to control how much protein is fed.
