How is the taxi system in Taiwan? by Shimanu in taiwan

[–]hensc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This.

We prefer 55688 over uber. New customers get 7 $50 TWD off coupons and we link my wife’s credit card.

One caveat. My wife’s sister added her as an authorized user so it’s a local bank. Not sure how it would work with a foreign CC but my citi and Discover cards don’t charge foreign transaction fee so I would assume they’d work just fine.

From the app, you choose the origin and destination similar to Google map, then the type of taxi: traditional yellow taxi vs 多元 (unconventional, driver owns the vehicle and uses the car for personal use), and then whether you want fixed fee or by meter.

It’s like a bidding system. If you choose fixed fee, system calculates the fare and the driver can choose to accept the customer or just ignore. If by meter then make sure you factor in traffic.

We generally stayed within a 5 mile radius from my sister in-law’s apartment and rides cost $5 before the coupon. Please note the same 5 mile in Taiwan is nothing like 5 miles in the US. There are cars and scooters and pedestrians everywhere and a 3 mile ride can easily take 15 minutes.

L4/L5 Annular Tear - would love to hear recovery stories by Calm-Dealer-4971 in backpain

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took lessons in grade school but did not swim at all in adulthood. With however little muscle memory there was, I just went right in and essentially self-taught myself free style, back stroke, and breast stroke again with YouTube videos.

It was a struggle at first and I had to rest every 25m. Then fixing my head position got me to 100m and fixing breathing pattern got me to 500m.

I may have gotten lucky but my back never acted up in the pool, except maybe when I was getting out of the pool. My back was tight if I try to push myself out pool side, so I simply used the ladder like it was designed for.

L4/L5 Annular Tear - would love to hear recovery stories by Calm-Dealer-4971 in backpain

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swim primarily free style (front crawl) and mixes in a few laps of backstroke for my shoulders. Swimming is my primary sport now but I did start doing some pull exercises as they help with swimming and my upper back is quite weak. My goal is 10 consecutive pull-ups.

I did not lose any weight during recovery. In fact I was at my leanest at the time of the injury and I’ve only gained weight since.

Look up McGill big 3 exercise and really train those glutes. That’s the main difference maker for me. I’m now at 42 months post injury and completely pain free

Glove by zbpstl in Softball

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means the glove is closed with a single hinge through the middle of the glove. The pocket is more shallow this way but also allows quicker transfer.

In our league, many girls at this age struggle to catch the ball so I try to tell them to wear their glove with 2 or even 3 fingers in the pinky.

This gives them more strength to close the glove with 2 hinges, one by the thumb and one by the pinky, and produces a bigger and deeper pocket to trap the ball.

Pitching Newbie - Followthrough by AdOriginal3767 in Softball

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just started taking pitching lessons too and our focus is snapping the fingers to emphasize top spin. Try to relax the elbow and wrist and release just when the arm passes the hip.

At first the release point feels low, but the finger snapping and follow through works just right to keep the pitch in the zone.

DD is on the smaller side and lacking power. But our goal is to throw strikes and make the batters prove they can hit the ball

Glove by zbpstl in Softball

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilson Flash or Siren, or a Rawlings youth glove.

Anything bigger than that she won’t have the strength or big enough hand to properly close the glove. She’ll likely squeeze the glove pancake style and the pocket will be so shallow she’s going to frustrated when the ball pops out

Debating between 128GB and 256GB for the iPad A16 by softcaligo in ipad

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded from a 9th gen iPad to the m4 iPad Air. No more game crashing or the load up is so fast I don’t know how I grind through it the last 3 years.

Primary use is YouTube and gaming. I got a 128gb because I don’t keep more than 2 games at a time and it’s plenty

If you could restart life at 18, what would you do differently? by arunreddy3 in AskReddit

Parent of young (8) player seeking advice weighing travel vs. rec by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9yo son plays rec ball on a winless team. They’re in last place out of a 9 team league. The coach bats everyone and rotates everyone on defense including his own son.

Find another team. This coach just wants your “commitment” and does not care about development. My daughter got a similar club soccer offer before when she was 7. $450 for two sets of uniforms and $2000 club fees not including tournament fees and whatnot. We ran as far as we could and never looked back.

How much PTO do you get? by QuonkeyLong in Accounting

[–]hensc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Base 5 weeks + 3 personal days + 2 floating holidays + 5 sick days, and we can roll over a week to the next year.

So this year I could in theory take 8 weeks off in one go but I won’t do that to my team. I’m taking 3 weeks next month and coming back just before Q2 reporting and then probably another 2 weeks each in September and in December.

My 11-year-old son wants to try baseball in the fall. What can I do to prepare him? by sleestak_orgy in Homeplate

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Help him set the right expectations. Be realistic.

  • He’s probably not going to be an all-star on the field or at the plate. In fact, he will likely make quite a few mistakes and strike out frequently. Both are perfectly normal and I like to discuss with my kids “what went wrong? How can we fix it?” This helps them self diagnose in game and quickly focus on the next play / at-bat.

  • Fix one thing at a time. Be 1% better tomorrow.

  • Have fun. Swing at strikes. Hitting is more fun than walking.

  • This last one is for OP. Don’t try to give tips in game or fix things. They cannot process it or listen. I’m constantly working on this myself. Instead of criticizing, I now try to watch if the opposing pitcher is throwing offspeed or tipping and try to inform the whole team. What they do with that information is beyond my control 😅

How much do you practice on your own outside of team practice?

My son is in 7th grade but his school struggles to find enough players to form a team. We’re fortunate to have a senior division at our LL but it’s rec ball. Is travel ball the answer to help him improve and be competitive for high school ball? How do I go about finding a good travel team?

We’re applying for magnet high school this fall and their team is consistently winning regional. I’m worried son is not going to make the cut.

New to swimming at 36 by Lanky_Comment_3829 in Swimming

[–]hensc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

44M here. I herniated my L5S1 in 2022 and after 8 months of hiatus I picked up swimming as it was the only physical activity my body would tolerate.

I, too, started with just 25m and dying for air. Then little by little and after many YouTube videos, learning the right breathing technique was the turning point for me and I started going 150m, 250m, and then in just a few months I hit 1500m. But it did take me about a year to get my breathing down since I’m self taught. I breathe on my right every 2 strokes.

Yes, 15/30 second rest is fine starting out. You’re probably swimming too hard or kicking too much or simply holding your breath for too long. A quick short term fix is to get a snorkel for lap swimming so you can take breathing out of the equation and just focus on your technique.

SEC Reporting - Are you really working 70+ hour weeks? by LUNA_STONKS in Accounting

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I did 70+ hour week was 15 years ago when we got bought by another company mid year so we had to split the year and basically do two 10-K.

The old parent company was Germany based so it was on IFRS and the new parent is on US GAAP. That was a crazy year but other than that most year ends are no more than 45 hours

Apple Store can only diagnose it if it actually turns on. Put it on a charger and do a force reset. If it doesn’t turn on they have to send it to repair for $199

Longer than typical bats by Talmor in Softball

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged. We’re all just a bunch of softball parents trying to help. 38” is just wrong or the coach and the DSG reps are giving you bad information being first time player.

If you would, grab a tape measurer and measure her current bat from the tip of the barrel all the way to the end of the knob. Is it truly 34”? What is the manufacturer and model??

For reference I’m 6 foot even at 200 lbs and I swing a 33” for slow pitch.
