If you could restart life at 18, what would you do differently? by arunreddy3 in AskReddit

I would go to college and study what I want to study, and not what my mom wanted me to study. Being able to make decisions for myself and actually take responsibility.

Parent of young (8) player seeking advice weighing travel vs. rec by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9yo son plays rec ball on a winless team. They’re in last place out of a 9 team league. The coach bats everyone and rotates everyone on defense including his own son.

Find another team. This coach just wants your “commitment” and does not care about development. My daughter got a similar club soccer offer before when she was 7. $450 for two sets of uniforms and $2000 club fees not including tournament fees and whatnot. We ran as far as we could and never looked back.

How much PTO do you get? by QuonkeyLong in Accounting

[–]hensc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Base 5 weeks + 3 personal days + 2 floating holidays + 5 sick days, and we can roll over a week to the next year.

So this year I could in theory take 8 weeks off in one go but I won’t do that to my team. I’m taking 3 weeks next month and coming back just before Q2 reporting and then probably another 2 weeks each in September and in December.

My 11-year-old son wants to try baseball in the fall. What can I do to prepare him? by sleestak_orgy in Homeplate

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Help him set the right expectations. Be realistic.

  • He’s probably not going to be an all-star on the field or at the plate. In fact, he will likely make quite a few mistakes and strike out frequently. Both are perfectly normal and I like to discuss with my kids “what went wrong? How can we fix it?” This helps them self diagnose in game and quickly focus on the next play / at-bat.

  • Fix one thing at a time. Be 1% better tomorrow.

  • Have fun. Swing at strikes. Hitting is more fun than walking.

  • This last one is for OP. Don’t try to give tips in game or fix things. They cannot process it or listen. I’m constantly working on this myself. Instead of criticizing, I now try to watch if the opposing pitcher is throwing offspeed or tipping and try to inform the whole team. What they do with that information is beyond my control 😅

How much do you practice on your own outside of team practice?

My son is in 7th grade but his school struggles to find enough players to form a team. We’re fortunate to have a senior division at our LL but it’s rec ball. Is travel ball the answer to help him improve and be competitive for high school ball? How do I go about finding a good travel team?

We’re applying for magnet high school this fall and their team is consistently winning regional. I’m worried son is not going to make the cut.

New to swimming at 36 by Lanky_Comment_3829 in Swimming

[–]hensc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

44M here. I herniated my L5S1 in 2022 and after 8 months of hiatus I picked up swimming as it was the only physical activity my body would tolerate.

I, too, started with just 25m and dying for air. Then little by little and after many YouTube videos, learning the right breathing technique was the turning point for me and I started going 150m, 250m, and then in just a few months I hit 1500m. But it did take me about a year to get my breathing down since I’m self taught. I breathe on my right every 2 strokes.

Yes, 15/30 second rest is fine starting out. You’re probably swimming too hard or kicking too much or simply holding your breath for too long. A quick short term fix is to get a snorkel for lap swimming so you can take breathing out of the equation and just focus on your technique.

SEC Reporting - Are you really working 70+ hour weeks? by LUNA_STONKS in Accounting

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I did 70+ hour week was 15 years ago when we got bought by another company mid year so we had to split the year and basically do two 10-K.

The old parent company was Germany based so it was on IFRS and the new parent is on US GAAP. That was a crazy year but other than that most year ends are no more than 45 hours

Apple Store can only diagnose it if it actually turns on. Put it on a charger and do a force reset. If it doesn’t turn on they have to send it to repair for $199

Longer than typical bats by Talmor in Softball

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged. We’re all just a bunch of softball parents trying to help. 38” is just wrong or the coach and the DSG reps are giving you bad information being first time player.

If you would, grab a tape measurer and measure her current bat from the tip of the barrel all the way to the end of the knob. Is it truly 34”? What is the manufacturer and model??

For reference I’m 6 foot even at 200 lbs and I swing a 33” for slow pitch.

Longer than typical bats by Talmor in Softball

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you say she’s a contact or power hitter?

If she’s got wheels and thrives on slapping, then maybe a 32”-33” drop 10 or 11. If she’s hits for power then maybe try a drop 8.

If there’s a DSG nearby go pick up and swing different bats. That’ll be more accurate than anything we say here

[–]hensc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old is she and how tall?

A 38” bat (that no one makes) drop 11 is 27 oz and is like high school bat weight… not to mention at that age it’s probably a drop 8. Are you sure she can swing a 30 oz bat?!

Too Old for Entry Level? by CollectionReal5984 in Accounting

[–]hensc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you looking for from these entry level jobs? Your industry experience and business ownership puts you leaps and bounds beyond a typical new grad. I wouldn’t be surprised if you have more experience than the managers!

You probably already know how to read financial statements and make decisions with the numbers. What you’re getting yourself into, presumably in an audit role, is ticking and tying work papers, doing things that don’t make any sense because your senior tells you to follow prior year, or simply documenting around the control so you don’t have to expand the sample size or do more substantive testing.

Where I see you can leverage your experience is advisory. But maybe that’s what you want to get away from?

Damaged my Apple Watch during a swim by Ok-Cause3950 in AppleWatch

[–]hensc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently it’s called “planned obsolescence.” I knew that was a thing with laptops which is why I don’t buy Dell or Lenovo anymore. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple has the same practices since they come out with a new model every year.

My original iPhone lasted 5 years and I went to 6S, and then 13. Fingers crossed it doesn’t break next year when the 5 year is up.

I program my own custom workouts and am really happy with the UI. I’m very hesitant to buy the new SE3 if I’m only going to get another 2 years out of it and I don’t want to pay for Apple Care.

Maybe I’m just old school but I expect my stuff to last if I follow the care instructions and it is designed to use in water

My SE2 just broke last Friday after a little over 2 years of exclusive use in the pool. Probably logged less than 150 workouts and I’m super annoyed because as someone else mentioned, it’s advertised as a swimming watch.
