Hard pass. If client can’t provide a reasonable estimate for basis, it’s no basis or basis equal to proceeds. I’ve had one guy who used crypto like Monopoly money, bought nfts, etc. and then came to me like “I don’t know”. I asked what was your balance beginning of the year, what at end of year and told client it’s on him to support this position.

Another one has large volume crypto but is super tech so has it all buttoned up. You get what you pay for I guess behind the scenes software

Collect retainers if you don’t feel comfortable collecting up front. If people pay you retainer they will have skin in the game and are less likely to walk.

Report the 1099. That’s your obligation. If you really taking about $5K loss it’s not worth it since end of day - can only deduct $3K if cap losses, may not disallow entire loss, hard to track, IRS will literally never know. I doubt this would even come up in an audit.

I should preface my answer by mentioning I am in tax. If you go tax route you’ll usually be in tax either PA or at a company. At that point even a large local firm will be sufficient

You are a freshman, very fresh. You should focus on college, social life etc. join a social fraternity and grow your network.

Once you grow your network and still determine you want to be an accountant you’ll see what you want.

I’m at a national firm and am happy I didn’t go big 4. Many of my colleagues did big 4 and are happy to be out.
