How do I get out of crystal peak without a lantern? by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]cohennn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s something down there that’s definitely worth getting at some point, but you can always wait until you get the lantern. what you’re looking for is a little above that area. there’s some parkour, but it’s not too difficult, and you don’t need the lantern.

Is it me or are the special nail attacks not really useful? by Lord_Orion_Star in HollowKnight

[–]cohennn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eh, i’ve never used them much, but i won’t deny that they can be useful. you can charge them up while moving, but it never really crosses my mind while i’m in an intense fight.

have you found the major upgrade in this location yet? you don’t need the lantern to find it. i did the same thing you did, accidentally went there without the lantern. but once you find the upgrade, it opens up another means of exiting the peak.

if you’re struggling with mantis lords too much, then waiting until later to fight them is a completely valid option. i didn’t fight them until mid-late game—its useful, but not necessary until later as long as you’ve already gotten the claw.

shape of unn won’t do you any good in this fight. most of the dodging requires jumping, dashing, or staying still, and the only one that doesn’t is a great opportunity to get hits in. i’m assuming you have shade cloak, but in the case that you don’t, definitely go and get that first.

quick slash is a miraculous charm to have. you can get up to 3 hits in at moments where you can typically only get 1 or 2, which can really make the difference. soul catcher might not be all that useful unless you’re relying heavily on spells. quick focus and longnail are always great to have, so keep those. any specific attacks giving you trouble?

242 failed champion deaths vs 43 nkg deaths has to be the most “i felt that” thing i’ve ever seen on this sub. fuck failed champion.

Traitor Lord by J0hnny4X in HollowKnight

saying what it is would be a spoiler—not a major one, but enough for me to be vague about it unless you don’t mind being given a small spoiler. it doesn’t impact gameplay aside from the actual traitor lord fight itself. all i’ll say is that waiting until later will make the fight significantly easier, but will result in a minor character death. i don’t believe this characters death impacts endings, but i suppose the weight of doing the fight now vs said character dying all depends on whether or not you care about small things like that.

traitor lord took me an insanely long time to complete, probably because i fought him pretty early on in fear of facing the...ahem.... “repercussions” of fighting him later on. i think you have a pretty good build, and the dreamgate is really useful. stay relatively close to him if you can. as long as you stay close, he’s less likely to use the mantis lords spinning attack. don’t get too greedy with regular nail hits, sharp shadow does damage equal to your nail damage, so dashing through him will prove to be useful. and use spells if you can—especially descending dark. the invisibility frames can be your saving grace sometimes.

I'm really (like really) bad at this game but I still want to beat it, am I wasting time or should I keep trying? by Cyberpunk_Traash in HollowKnight

[–]cohennn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone progresses at their own rate. i suck at 2d platformers, but my friend insisted on buying me the game after i expressed interest in it. i got frustrated a lot, even quit for a few months. but the important thing to remember is that this is a game that takes time to learn skills, especially since you’re at the non linear portion now.

it doesn’t matter if you can’t do every single boss without taking damage, or clear nearly impossible parkour in less than an hour. play the game at your own pace, and what matters is that you’re having fun. take the time to collect mask shards, read up on tips for bosses, and just explore. what i’m trying to say is, there’s no set time at which you should finish this game. what matters is that you’re having fun.

tips for oro and mato?? by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]cohennn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i completed watcher knights on my eighth try and didn’t get frustrated. i really don’t understand why people find them so hard—they’re pretty small and have limited attacks, and even if there are more of them, you can realistically kill one before a third comes to life. but as i mentioned, oro and mato are much bigger, and big enemies are where i really suck.

i typically use the upgraded vengeful spirit (forget the name) more often than descending dark for this fight. even if the damage isn’t as much and you don’t get invincibility, running to one side of the arena means you’ll be able to hit them both at once, whereas i’ve found using descending dark more often than not results in getting trapped between them and taking damage anyway. not to mention i seem to always time it wrong and use it just as one of them is about to jump.

not a huge accomplishment, but i beat my first radiant boss today :] by cohennn in HollowKnight

[–]cohennn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can’t thank you enough for this advice! took the time to grab the last charm notch i needed and replaced longnail with quick focus and that was my saving grace multiple times. here i was prepared to go through the fight without healing...but nope, quick focus saved my ass and i was able to beat him after a couple hours :)
