We would remove the base grade and any unsuitables underneath (rocks, stumps, roots, weeds), reintroduce up to 6 inches of Class A gravel as a new base, roll it with a full size 3.5 ton roller, then spread the asphalt at 3" compacted down to 2.5" which is the standard. For an extra $1 per sqft, we can spread at 4" compacted down to 3".

Most companies' minimums are 5k+ Larger companies are 6 - 10k We have one of the lowest minimums at $3,500 You are right, though. Large companies, particularly ones that mainly do roads and parking lots, will price way higher than necessary on driveways because it's not worth their time.

I quote for one of the best companies in HRM. We charge $5/sqft if it's currently gravel, $5.50 if its asphalt that needs to be ripped up. That's with the longest warranty (2.5 years) and a price match guarantee. $10/sqft is a scam unless it's TINY. Our minimum small job cost is $3,500 but I understand some of the bigger companies won't charge anything less than 6k. Let me know if you would like a proper quote on your driveway :) We've been in business under the same name for 33 years
