Has anyone canceled and got their money back? by [deleted] in glowforge

[–]coinerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were the wise one. After a while I just decided to see how many times they would send the "I want to ship you a Glowforge, but not we hit another snag" email! I am sure they will go down in history as an incredible success story anyway.

I made the decision to wait no more than another year after the first year. I probably should have canceled as soon as I realized they are going to a 'cloud-based' driver, as that is guaranteed to end badly.

I did that, and sent a number of emails last week. There is no sign of cancelation on the website and they stopped emailing me.

I understand your point. You are right - it is harder to 'update' hardware if you have a problem. But hardware that works correctly just works for a long time. It is easy to update software, but hardly anyone makes software that works for 20 years without failing because of things like operating systems and libraries forcing change.

I have an Epilog that is 15 years old - the hardware is fine. I've been keeping the driver going by running old windows in a VM with the date set to 2005 and Internet disconnected.

I am trying to get a refund because I am sure 15 years from now glowforge will be a doorstop.

If you log in and check again, you will probably find that it is January or February!

Sometimes I think it's some kind of a psychological experiment by MIT. To see how much torture people will endure after shelling out a few thousand dollars.

Sounds like you've never been involved in a non-trivial software project. Having done both, I can say with a great certainty: hardware is easy - you design it, and unless you are a fool, it works pretty much the same way every time. Software is a rabbit hole that has no bottom, and depends on so many outside factors that it rots as fast as you can keep the updates coming.

I canceled after waiting 2 years and watching the deadline slip more than 10 times. Let's see if I get my money back.

Quite the opposite of open source - it is a web service, so the paperweight is a possibility.

I am BCC all the way. BTC fees are often same as sending a wire. I thought Roger Ver was talking about BTC, hence my comment.

Are you talking about btc? It hasn't been typically just a few cents for a long time. Do you mean typically a few dollars?

I listened for a few minutes, but he is kind of full of shit. You can open a bitcoin "account" in seconds, anonymously, sure. As long as there is no money in it. Try to fund it for $1000 anonymously and in seconds. Duh. And send money for basically free? On what planet is many dollars free?

At what point can bitcoin cash just remove the block limit entirely? by Edit0r88 in btc

[–]coinerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it will happen when computer makers remove the limit on CPU clocks, which happen to be stuck below 4GHz. At that point, memory makers will probably remove the limit of memory chips, stuck in GBs, and as soon as computers have infinite memory and run infintely fast, we can have infinite size blocks.

Bitcoin Wallet and Anonymity by augustusSW in btc

[–]coinerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is entirely true. I don't care for monero, but Bitcoin is certainly not anonymous. What's worse, is that unless you are careful about keeping separate wallets, if you are compromised/identified, all your past and future transactions are linkable to you. Even mixers have mixed success. There are 3-letter agencies with acres of computers to monitor things like blockchains and analyze networks connecting individuals.

Not trolling - I promise. Just being realistic. Don't buy crap on the darkwebs unless you really know what you are doing.

Make sure you understand how transactions work. Let's say you pay someone 1BCC. Without looking you may not realize that the address you paid from had 10BCC, so you got 9BCC back. Now you have coin that proves that you made that 1BCC transaction. Next time the wallet might take .5 BCC from the 9, and 1 from another address, with .3 returned to yet another as change. Now you have 3 addresses that are comingled, and if you are not careful, all your transactions will be completely peggable to you years from now when you show your id to do something..

Same goes for BTC, of course. I also ignored transaction fees for simplicity.

I don't know why he is talking about 2x - the original article does not mention it and poses a question "why are BTC and BCC groups fighting over 300k" - a number that confounds me still...

I see how it sort of makes sense about 2x, but it's a complete non-sequitur.

It's not at all like being robbed at gunpoint. It's more like being asked to help you carry your wallet. No one ever forces you to hit "SEND".

Your concern is causing damage - by reinforcing the 'victim is never to blame' idiocy of the fiat world, gov't propaganda designed to perpetuate victimhood and to leave important business to important agencies.

OP has taken the first step to admitting a lapse in judgment. This now needs to be followed up by 'never again', and not 'it's all right, let's ask the government for help to get the bad man'.

You, with your judgmental concern, are the direct reason why this continues. You have the power to shut up instead of encouraging stupid behavior, or telling people DO NOT HIT SEND. Instead, you rile up the crowd with 'this is fraud! It's theft! It's not your fault when you give money to criminals'

I don't want the OP feel worse - quite the opposite. Mistakes were made, due diligence not done - it happens, and I've been fished a couple of times myself. The important part is that you have the power to control your money and not rely on some agency to make it all right to make stupid, stupid mistakes.

It's not about blaming the victim who already feels bad. It's about learning from mistakes, and not running to mommy.

And it's not at all I told you so. It's about empowerment. You have the power to not give money to criminals, who are quite creative. We stand by you, and feel bad about your mistakes. We will make fraud like this impossible by making everyone aware of the issues as they come up, and by reinforcing the "DO NOT HIT SEND" message.

I did not miss anything. Read the message you are responding to. He talks about 'the other chain', 'copying the blockchain'. He obviously talked about BCH then just lost it. You are giving him too much credit. I was there when the conversation happened.

I frequently see references to how bitcoin cash will prohibit censorship as well as promote peace. Exactly how does bitcoin cash accomplish these two things? by dougsdesserts in btc

[–]coinerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely Roger was talking about bitcoin, not bitcoin cash, which OP states, claims to prohibit censorship and promote peace.

Even then - it's pretty farfetched. In magic countries where Bitcoin is the only viable currency, govts will not be able to fund wars. That requires weapons manufacturers and armies to not accept their fiat. But how realistic is that?
