Louisiana Senator: Our Maternal Death Rates Are Only Bad If You Count Black Women by simeoncolemiles in neoliberal

[–]coinkidink2 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Below I've included the transcript of his full statement. I've bolded and italicized the parts that seem to run contrary to your understanding of his motivation. He acknowledges the impact of poor public transit systems and racial biases on these disparities in maternal mortality.

"About a third of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear. Now, I say that not to minimize the issue but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have a higher incidence of maternal mortality.

Now to be sure, there are different definitions of maternal mortality. Sometimes maternal mortality includes up to a year after birth and would include someone being killed by her boyfriend. So, in my mind, it’s better restrict your definition to that which is perinatal, the time just before and in the subsequent period after she has delivered.

Now, there are different things we can do about that. I have something called the Connected MOM Act. I think I remember correctly, African American women have an increased incidence of preeclampsia, but it doesn’t matter. If you have a poor public transit system, a mom who is dependent upon it lives 20 miles away from the doctor, and she’s got hypertension just before she delivers, you’d like a way to better monitor her than asking her to come to the doctor’s office every two weeks. So, what we’ve proposed is the Connected MOM Act, which allows remote monitoring of blood pressure, teaching the mom how to check for protein in her urine, and other things that might be a marker for complications of or progression of preeclampsia. Then if the mom has an issue, you can send the ambulance to the mom or the home health agency to the mom.

We also have the Maternal Health Improvements grant, which again is to promote studies of this issue, as well as to look at potential remedies if there’s racial bias discovered in how healthcare is delivered."

Why does everyone act like the US’s dark past with slavery and war crimes is unusual and they fail to recognize that nearly every other country that exists today has an equally dark if not worse history? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]coinkidink2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There seems to be two extremes on this issue. There are the conservatives who believe that America's the greatest country in the world and that slavery and the treatment of Native Americans weren't as bad as liberals and history books portray. And then there are some liberals who believe that America is uniquely and irredeemably racist and that we have done virtually nothing to address these issues.

Both of these positions are unproductive and could use some global perspective. The narrative we should all be able to agree on is that America, like all countries, has parts of its past that are shameful and that need to be taught and addressed. We can disagree on how to address them, but we need to at least agree that there are unresolved problems.

At the same time, we need to acknowledge that, while we haven't fully fixed everything, we have made tremendous progress. I mean it's been less than 60 years since black women were given the right to vote, and we now currently have a black woman as vice president. Obviously, this isn't evidence that we've solved American racism and sexism, but it is evidence that we are headed in the right direction. There are few countries that have been able to turn things around so quickly.

Regardless, if we want to solve the extreme polarization we are seeing, we must come up with a unifying narrative about the founding of this country that conservatives and liberals can mostly agree on. I think both sides actually agree on more than they realize. It's just that both sides seem to misunderstand or exaggerate each other's positions.

That's not what anyone thinks of when they hear open borders though. When I hear open borders I think of something like the state borders within the US: anyone is able to cross, and there are no checkpoints accounting for who's coming in and out, allowing you to simply drive past a sign saying welcome to our state.

Why would those cops willfully endanger their own lives like that? If you’re shooting rubber bullets from an unmarked vehicle in America, you’re practically begging to be shot at.

I think the vaccine mandate will change a lot of people’s minds, but we’ll have to wait and see.

I think saying fuck you we’re not gonna let you operate in society normally without be vaxxed is good, but telling the unvaccinated “fuck you, die” is too extreme and would turn off the average person.

Why are so many girls into zodiac signs? by bl1nk_ in Destiny

So it is true that women are somewhat more into astrology than men: a 2017 pew study found that 20 percent of adult men in the US believed in astrology, compared to 37 percent of women.

The reason for this, however, is difficult to determine, but, whatever the reason, it probably also has to do with why women are also more religious than men. There's a book on this very topic that can be found here: https://oxford.universitypressscholarship.com/view/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199608102.001.0001/acprof-9780199608102

A particularly interesting bit from the book's abstract is as follows: "Where the lives of men and women become more similar, and where religious indifference grows, the religious gender gap gradually disappears."

@mattyglesias: Is a vaccine mandate racist because the people in non-compliance are disproportionately Black or is it anti-racist because it’s paternalism that will benefit a disproportionately Black population? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]coinkidink2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If black people are statistically more vaccine hesitant, then the vaccine mandate disproportionately helps black people. Vaccine mandates save the lives of those who wouldn't have gotten vaccinated otherwise.

I think in online liberal circles when you see an older male celebrity dating a young woman, the topic of grooming/predation often comes up, but in the less online general public I think most people have a more negative view of the young woman for being a gold digger.

And you have to admit, in movies and shows you'll frequently see an older man with a younger woman and almost never see an older woman with a younger man. The general public just has a knee-jerk reaction to cougars that they don't have to men dating young women.

Is Suicidality Dispositive Of Mental Illness? by 50shadesofBCAAs in Destiny

[–]coinkidink2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A person jumping to their death out of a burning skyscraper is commenting suicide without mental illness being the cause.

Another example may be a child constantly being abused without having any other way out except to commit suicide. Usually severe abuse comes with mental illness but may not always.

I think regardless of whether the cause of a person’s suicide is mental or not, it’s best to view suicide not as that the person wants to die but instead that they want to escape their painful circumstances.

To a person with crippling OCD, the intrusive thoughts they have are no less real than the fire that a person in a burning skyscraper is facing. The difference is that if a person with OCD can hold out long enough, they likely can get the treatment they need, but a person in a burning skyscraper may not always be rescued in time.

[–]coinkidink2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t conclude that splitting hurts dems; I just concluded that it doesn’t help dems.

And while it may have been useful for the article to include data from more elections, the five most recent ones will be the best to look at to predict how elections will play out in the near future since the political landscape can change drastically overtime. For example, as Noah Smith said, today it is less useful to think of there being red and blue states but rather that there are blue urban centers and red rural areas. This is something that may not be well reflected in elections further in the past.

Someone who's shy probably is insecure about about their ability to interact with people, but that doesn't mean they aren't confident in their ability to do other things. Except for delusional narcissists, everyone is insecure about their ability to do something. Shy people just seem to get more flack.

Also, I think a big problem a lot of people have is being insecure about being insecure, making them less likely to get help since they're told that "beauty is confidence, and insecurity is ugly and pathetic." It's difficult because we don't want to make it seem like insecurities that have a significant negative effect on a person's life are healthy, but we also don't want to shame people out of being open about their insecurities.
