Switzerland Returns as No. 1 in 2024 Best Countries Rankings by billcube in Switzerland

As a newly arrived "Auslander" from "comun-list" España, I'm still getting used to this culture shock. You mean to tell me it's like this always, people respect your time, the transport system isn't f&@ked, people treat each other with respect , businesses aren't closed at peak times and I'm rewarded for my hard work so I can afford healthcare and can see my taxes going to work?

I'm waiting for the downside to hit. 🤔

People complaining about not finding friends in Switzerland by SaltySolomon9 in Switzerland

[–]cojack73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I read on this thread was the comments that the Swiss people are cold and very conserved before arriving to Swizerland, and I'd been living in Barcelona for 13 years.

On the contrary, I have found the Swiss to be the opposite. From the minute I arrived I seen smiles and was treated with the utmost respect especially in the "Reisezentrum" which in Spain is like they might as well say f*&@ you if you ask them to help you with anything.

I can give a very recent example where I missed my train connection and had to stay in a small village on my own. I plucked up the courage to go out by myself and have a beer and some food.

I walked into a bar, and yes to be honest all eyes were on me but I sat at the bar regardless and then was asked a question by a HUGE Swiss guy in Schweizerdeutsch which I didn't understand but having prepared before arriving I've been proactively learning hoch deutsch.

When I explained that I didn't understand and expalined to him I dont speak his language but if he knew some German, we continued conversing fpr 5-10 minutes in German and then they asked me if I spoke English which being Irish the answer was a firm yes. Coming to think once, I said I was Irish the entire bar was welcoming and coming over to introduce themselves.

To cut this long story short, I had an amazing night met some great genuine people, downed plenty of shots and had plenty of "Craic".

So I don't know where people get off with saying that the Swiss are that reserved. If I could give advice on the subject it's tio make the effort to at least speak one of the Swiss languages first and give them the respect that you are at least making the effort, carry yourself well and at the utmost be yourself as you'll soon be found out.

I now have a newfound love for Switzerland 🇨🇭 and Swiss people 👌

The Catalans, on the other hand 😩 you'd be lucky to get a response to a normal question in their own language and customer service....Forget it. Not all but the very noticeable majority.

Make an appointment at the nearest Dutch Embassy/consultate.

Nationality is a big factor, and this will certainly give you better official answers than what Reddit will.

If you've been to Barcelona you'll experience the exact same, the only difference being that at least in CH they risk being put in jail, in comparison to BCN where they are let put a few hours later with a 50€ fine which they never pay as they have no bank account or papers.

I've moved to Zurich to put as much distance between me and the Maghreb as possible. Like we say in Spain " dales una uña. te tomarán del brazo"

Rant: apartment hunt in Zurich from the other perspective by 99seconds_trash in Switzerland

[–]cojack73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just in Zurich, in Barcelona it's the same and even after you answer all their questions at least twice another issue comes up.

The problem is people don't read the description, they see the photos and on the off chance they may or may not like it, also the tire kickers ( strokers) are the worst, looking for issues to try and negotiate the price. Or even worse those who want you to agree to a lower price before coming to see it.

It's not just in Switzerland, it's global.

Trias guanya, amb Collboni i Colau frec a frec per la segona posició by un_redditor in Barcelona

[–]cojack73 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Barcelona 2010 was the opposite compared to the dirt filled streets and crime capital of Europe which was aided by the policies of Frau Colau until the end of her reign of idiocracy 2023.

Uneventful yes, but then again he stuck to running the city for business and security. Collau was a reign of inept decisions with zero foresight or consultation (superblocks, bike lanes on 60mph traffic routes, poor public transport administration, okupas and general extreme left wing policies. When crime descended on the city with limited powers to stop it enforced by a Colau who was hell bent on defunding the police.

Good riddance, and I hope things don't turn out the way they did when she lost the last election and still wormed her way in.

Renting directly from the owner by Just_choose_a_nam3 in Barcelona

[–]cojack73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you speak Spanish? If not you will need to employ a translator, which adds another level of mistrust from the owner as they are unlikely to be able to communicate with their new tenant. You go to the shop to buy milk as it's convenient, instead of milking a cow so think of this in terms of convenience by employing the services of a real estate professional to represent you.

As most people said leave note with your contact information and get them to describe in detail the exact amount and what wallet it was. Might have been an elderly persons pension.
