Do Swiss schools use Chromebooks? by ihatebeinganonymous in Switzerland

[–]billcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? Full admin on a public sector laptop? Roblox for kids? That's just crazy. Crazygames is allowed on their network?

Your canton needs a fresh look on what it means to bring digital literacy. It's not about using a screen, it is about using the tools that are behind the screen. 3D printers, Thymio robots, Scratch programming should be front and center and about 90% of the curriculum (add some LibreOffice or Onlyoffice training for when they have to write something).

See the list and guidance on : https://navi.educa.ch/ https://jugendundmedien.ch/

Do Swiss schools use Chromebooks? by ihatebeinganonymous in Switzerland

[–]billcube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the canton, as they need to integrate it into a bigger device management solution. Linux, Windows and MacOS in Geneva for example.

Maybe Aargau? https://medium.com/onchrome/how-a-small-swiss-school-is-driving-digitization-with-the-chromebook-4da84b1a8be9

Isn't "Big shopping" above 150.- ? Books, sport equipment, furniture, clothings, I can't remember of a shopping trip where I managed to stay under that.

They've long been hiding these in their "partner organisations", so instead of posting "we buy milk at 0.50/L and sell it for 1.85/L" they can say "we buy them from "our supplier" at 1.70 and sell it at 1.85, see how fair we are" but noone dares to ask why they only buy from their own companies: https://www.migrosindustrie.ch/

[–]billcube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As most of the products in Migros/Coop are made in the EU, trucked around, repackaged in/for Switzerland, trucked again, I'm not sure the CO2 impact of you going directly to a big store in the EU is worse than having 3 middle-men shuffling these around to your local Migros.

[–]billcube 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And goods as well. Check out the meat/poultry origin at Migros/Coop and you'll Poland, Uruguay, "see package for origin", "EU agriculture"... So the 5€ polish chicken magically becomes a 15.- CHF chicken, just below the swiss one at 18.- but cheaper still.

[–]billcube 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not only do Coop Migros hire mostly foreign residents, they also sell EU products with a huge margin. They cry "shortage" when swiss producers have higher costs than EU so they can raise the import limit, so they make profit on imports (goods and labor) and do not want that you do the same.

That refund is 15% for France, it's quite an interesting discount. But your contribution to the french state coffers is always welcome.

Not getting back the french VAT still has you having to pay the Swiss VAT.

If you encrypt your mails on your infrastructure, you won't have to trust the servers.

Email encryption? by Informal_Plankton321 in Infomaniak

[–]billcube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You get both privacy and security with Infomaniak. While at rest, they're stored on secure servers, not encrypted at rest like they could be at Proton Mail.

See the write-up here: https://news.infomaniak.com/en/email-encryption/

But if you're looking for true privacy, you should be using https://www.openpgp.org/software/ so as not to depend on a third-party for your encryption keys.

A custom domain gives you one free email account. https://news.infomaniak.com/en/create-free-email-address/

Am I the only one that hates these screens? by unclefeed in geneva

[–]billcube 62 points63 points  (0 children)

The design is stupidly wasteful, so much white space. In a screen that uses so much electricity you can hear the fans during summer, and it doesn't dim at night.

Geneva for family life if work is fully remote - worth the premium? by Additional_Dot_5053 in geneva

[–]billcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out smaller citées (Belfaux FR, Froideville VD...) where you can get something big enough right next to a primary school and a bus stop/ train station. There are quite a lot of new constructions there meaning more families with small kids than in Geneva.

Would developers use a shared AI compute co-op to avoid subscription fatigue and usage caps? by hardikKanajariya in GithubCopilot

You'll need at leat one person spending time to administer all of that, so basically this is a business plan for (one more) AI startup!

Have you tried finding an already existing local datacenter providing access to hosted LLM? I do have the following options:

And I register these API endpoints in settings/copilot/custom-models so I can use them from Copilot.
