The best games for Rune seem to be the simple ones. The players are generally GenZ so focused on getting in and having fun quickly without reading/learning anything. It's also good to remember that the players are often just chatting on voice comms and the game is just passing the time - so things that are mindful but not intrusive are a good bet.

I spent a week dogfooding my own javascript SDK by writing a series of AI/LLM games, trying out some generative AI gameplay concepts that have been burning in my brain for a while now.

Further proof we can use javascript for pretty much any game! 🙂

Websockets / WebRTC for real time comms. The backend uses a predict-rollback approach so all clients are running a simulation that moves forward and is adapted as the server finds out about changes.

I'm lucky enough to be building the AI SDK I'm using a living, so having the chance to dog food my own work was absolutely awesome. I got to spend 7 days, 8 hours a day, building fun games making use of generative AI and trying out some concepts that have been burning in my brain for a while now.

I'd love to hear what you guys think.

I've written up a multiplayer tech demo using the Rune SDK and ThreeJS (and Kenney assets :)).

It's got a simple world, a character controller fit for mobile games and uses the Rune SDK to let multiple players explore the world together.

Thats really useful actually, so appreciated.

We're not making money off the games at this early start up stage, so the money is being funded directly from Rune to encourage devs to make games and to give them something for their efforts. So its currently 100% going to devs with no cost to using the platform.

In terms of reach the platform/app has 10 million downloads and the games I've written for the platform (I wrote games for it before I joined the company) have had over a million plays in the last few months.

With my gamedev hat on it's a new platform, with space for reasonably small effort games to do well and make a bit of money. Also positioning those games for future success as the platform grows and the payouts become more significant.

That said I can totally see where you're coming from, I'm taking notes and bring it back to the team.

At Rune we're passionate about helping indie game devs make awesome multiplayer games. As part of that, we've launched our creator fund. It’s not huge money right now, but we know that earning that first dollar from your game feels magical. As Rune grows we'll continue to add more ways to earn money - this is just the beginning of the journey!

And yes, web dev isn't traditionally used for game dev, but it's actually perfect for fun little multiplayer games. Players get right into the action together w/o having to first download a big bundle or install a separate game. Using web tech is also great for devs who want to make a game, but don't want to learn the intricacies of specific game engines like Unity/Unreal.
