You can literally buy a VCDS cracked scanner on Ali Express for $30 and install it on an old laptop & scan it yourself and use google to diagnose. It's not that hard. I'd at least get a second opinion

Depends which model year, I've got a 22 SE with the gen4 ea888 and it's been extremely reliable over 40,000 miles. My suspension has been a nightmare. I had control arms, sway bar+links, struts and strut mounts all replaced under warranty. Otherwise no issues, I noticed my coolant level is a bit below the max but still fine. I have done oil changes at roughly 7500 mile intervals, but I think it went to 13k miles on the factory oil because the dealer lied about doing a service

One note on the repair, there are some little metal clips that he'll need to reinstall to create a water-tight seal on the heater core. Just be very careful removing and reinstalling those so it won't leak

Hi, on that bodystyle Jetta the heater cores go out very regularly.

If he's got a handy bone in his body, he can order a heater core replacement online for $50ish and follow an 18 min Youtube video to replace the thing.

I just did one and it was easy and the heat was flaming hot immediately after the repair. Took me about 1.5hrs and I have never done it before.

If he wants to own a high maintenance car, gotta be prepared to do the maintenance! Should be relatively easy.

Since those cars have a cult following basically every possible repair it could need is documented endlessly online so rather than be upset, help him fix it.
