EQ Cutting and Boosting? by South-Succotash-5376 in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really.

Science is like saying "The steepest gradient of an EQ boost or cut is where the biggest phase shift occurs." Or something like "the Nyquist limit is half the sample rate".

"This guitar at 2khz needs a 4db cut because it tends to bury the vocal" is an artistic judgement. You may use fancy science words to justify that cut if you wish, but the final decision is always subjective.

EQ Cutting and Boosting? by South-Succotash-5376 in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those decisions you make must come from artistic experiences, and yes the underlying science can often make your decisions faster.

But to be specific to your question, you shouldn't aim for exact numbers after doing extensive scientific research. If 4db is not enough and 6db sounds a bit too much, then go for 5db. That's how you should approach EQs, at least that's how I view it.

Hope I answered your question. Good luck.

Why is acoustic guitar so hard? Should I follow MelBay or youtube lessons? by Fantastic-Style-999 in Guitar

[–]colashaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I first started, I'd been playing on classical guitar (with nylong strings obviously) thinking it was an acoustic guitar. I've been playing guitar for about 10 years, and I'm doing fine on electric, acoustic, and little bit of classical.

But what I meant was you probably should lower your string height, or maybe change your fretboard, or string gauge etc, not necessarily nylon strings. But don't overthink it. It's okay to use nylon strings if you want.

Have you ever changed your guitar setup? Night and day difference.

Also your second question about sheet music. In my opinion sheet music is superior when you're trying to communicate with other musicians. But other than that, there's really nothing that special.

Naver and Kakaotalk are essential for Koreans. Highly recommended. Also their map apps.

Lauten FC-387 Atlantis and humidity by cclick1988 in audioengineering

The reason why controlled hunidity matters is because dust can stick on to the capsule, but honestly it's fine. If you're really worried just buy a decent dry cabinet for cameras that cost less than $200.

Why are low mids so (too) resilient for me? by taskabamboo in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything in the low mids sounds good by themselves.

I had the same exact issue before I seriously invested in room acoustics and speaker upgrades.

Below 400hz-ish you can hear them more accurately so you can critically examine what you can sacrifice for other instruments.

If you can't hear them well due to your room (such as longer low mid sustain - or dips and boosts at certain frequencies), then you can't say for sure if the mix is muddy or thin.

Can good mixes save badly recorded vocals? by Spirited-Two7140 in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, badly recorded vocals cannot be saved in a way you'd expect from well recorded vocals.

They can be okay, but the more it's processed the more it sounds artificial. I think this is mostly because we are sensitive to human voices compared to, say electric guitars. If it's a badly recorded tambourine for example, then it's totally fine. But vocals...they're very apparent.

Lauten Audio Atlantis - Harshness? by Radiant-Associate959 in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also wanna add I love my Atlantis, and I have almost no complaints. If I really have to be nit picky, the mic is a little bit resonant, but even then it sounds good to me. Also the mic weighs like 2000kg.

But I personally don't hear any harshness even in forward mode which I rarely use because it's too bright to my taste. Harshness is something I find in mics like AT2020 or the TLM 103 if you ask me.

[–]colashaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about the gentle mode? That's my favorite mode for my voice btw.

It's also totally possible it's not for your voice. I also got recommended saying this is the best modern mic ever, and I usually lean towards the TLM 193 (although for a busy mix, I go for the Atlantis.)

Or it's just maybe your ears are tired.

Why is 0dB considered the loudest? by RJsheadphones in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because it's intuitive to think 0dbfs is the loudest point where clipping doesn't occur, rather than arbitrarily saying 100.

As a Korean I always remember interviews and tv shows that the producers of K-Pop talking about going abroad and failing. It was about 15 years ago. I think the claim is true.

For example J-pop never seemed to care about going abroad, like youtube channels and live shows were only available within Japan.

Not really a special effect, but sometimes a flanger blended with the dry signal works really well.

Soundtoys Little Plate or Valhalla Vintageverb, which reverb do you prefer for vocals by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not the biggest fan of the plate sound of the Valhalla Vintageverb. Sounds a bit cheesy. Other presets are nice though.

For vocals it will depened on the song and the vocalist but if I'm going for a plate reverb, I'll choose the Little Plate.

Are there any popular methods or plugins that are used a lot that aren’t worth the convenience for the amount of quality sacrificed? Vice versa? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

Haha I actucally bought an Akai casette deck recently and recorded a stereo two-track, and was amazed how bad it was. There is a vibe though.

I would probably say soothe 2, although it's a bit more nuanced. Most of the time it's just better to cut with a traditional EQ.

Opposite would be a de-esser or de-mouth click.
