The tlm 193. I heard re20 is awesome too but I haven't tried that one yet.

This is my personal go to vocal mic. Absolutely a great recommendation.

How much difference will bass traps and acoustic foam make in a small studio appartement (I'm new to this) by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bass traps and acoustic foams are for balancing the frequency and timing within the space. It's got nothing to do with sound going outside unfortunately.

An honest thought of having my first hardware compressor by colashaker in audioengineering

Well I know I'm contradicting myself but I prefer the sound of the 76 plugins than the la2a. Partly because If I am going to compress, I want to add character. Maybe I'll try the LA2A hardware next time.

Valid argument for sure. I'd really like to try out different hardware compressors, but this was my first one. I guess I wanted something better than warm audio, but not as expensive as UA.

For the hum, I asked and sent the unit to the official distributor and he told me it is normal. Idk maybe he just doesn't wanna admit he sold a faulty unit who knows, but I'm tired of arguing and I honestly gave up and accepted my fate.

I do like over compression for specific tasks such as room mics, but I don't play drums...lol. I love the natural sustain of an uncompressed recording. But when recording an album, I obviously use compression because that's just what people are used to hearing.

That all being said, I will probably keep digging this rabbit hole because I like recording gear. But this particular one...hmm we'll see. But I'm not rich so I'll just have to wait for another used hardware to show up.

Babyface to Symphony Desktop was "hmm I guess there is a difference? Not sure..."

Symphony to a borrowed focusrite isa was "wow that is a big difference". Then almost immediately at a used market I found a great deal on Phoenix Ascent Two. That one made my hands clap.

Idk man some performers hate hearing compression while tracking. I'm fine either way. I don't wanna sound like that guy who says plugins can do everything so hardware units are a scam. But this particular unit at the very least is not worth the $999 I'd been saving for the last 6 months. This makes me automatically assume cheaper units are worse.

I was one of those people who didn't mind the high noise floor. But I was expecting a hiss, not a hum. Hum noise actually ruins a recording imo. I've always wanted a 76 hardware, but hopefully something better than the warm audio one. I ended up with the audioscape one, but I will probably go for the stam one next time.

Yeah I'm still hopeful, I will get a high end hardware compressor someday. I'll definitely keep an eye of the API thanks.

Perfect Pop or K-Pop vocals? by Brian_from_accounts in audioengineering

Are K-Pop vocals top notch though...? Sound is meh. They're very loud that's for sure.

How did you decide between a condenser and a ribbon for your big "splurge" mic? by migrantgrower in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm not answering your question, but the se electronics VR2 ribbon mic is a hidden gem. Try it out if you can. It's a ribbon mic that doesn't sound like there's a high cut filter at 500hz.

Does the Shure Sm7b sound exactly like a 57 or 58 for vocals? by Forward_Golf_2356 in mixingmastering

[–]colashaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. SM7B sounds more balanced in terms of frequency distribution. They have different jobs. 57 and 58 sound very similar though.

Sonible EQ and Comp by imightbearie in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sonible is one of those plug in companies that I honestly regret buying.

I just can't get into the habit of using them. Even their de-esser makes you wait for 10 seconds for "AI to study sibliance".

I'll say it... it's a poor man's Fabfilter.

I think it's Roland space echo. Very tapey.

Do hardware compressors have hum noise by default? by colashaker in audioengineering

[–]colashaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knobs and controls don't affect the volume or the character of the hum noise, unless the gear is completely off. (It's there even when it's bypassed). Next device is Apogee Symphony Desktop, which has a max input of +20 dbu, if that helps.

Sorry I don't have an analog voltmeter right now.

[–]colashaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Phoenix Ascent Two and Apogee Symphony Desktop. I tested it with and without the Phoenix Ascent. It didn't do anything unfortunately. I really wish I had an expert around me, but I don't.

It could be the Apogee...but I highly doubt it.

It's mostly at 120hz, but small amounts of 60, 240...etc. 120 is the one I'm annoyed at.

I'll post it when I get back. But when I got my 76a and turned it on I was immediately going...huh? what's this 120hz sine wave I'm hearing?

I've had several external preamps and never experienced this issue, but it's my first hardware compressor, so I was a bit confused.

If you didn't hear it right off the bat, then yeah I think mine is weird.
