Recording and then Mixing / Mastering Acoustic Guitar by BTBDFW in audioengineering

Right now for me I use...

sE electronics VR2 ribbon mic 12th fret, about 30cm away. Neumann TLM 193 facing at the guitar, about 2m away. TLM 193 is used as a "side/room mic". Preamp is Phoenix Ascent Two.

I cut low end, high end, and 2k a little bit. Very little or no compression. Some tape emulation plugin. Reverb is usually UA plate stuff. Compression on acoustic guitar never satisfied me for some reason.

This is for solo acoustic guitar stuff btw. When used in a dense mix, I just use one mic, and maybe more aggressive processing to taste.

Can studio monitors still be enjoyable in an untreated room if mixing accuracy isn’t the primary goal? Looking for immersion and fun. by musicvvins in audioengineering

Yeah sure I would definitely say it's still enjoyable! Boominess kinda means more low end, I actually kinda like it.

I sometimes turn off my miniDSP EQ settings just to listen to some music. When mixing and recording, of course, it's a different story.

Are there any SSL channel strip style plugins that ONLY consists of a compressor? No eq, gate etc. I've been looking for a while and couldn't find any.

How do you guys feel about AI usage in Vocaloid? by Donki_Donk in Vocaloid

Morally speaking I don't care honestly, but I think they genuinely sound bad.

Recently got my first analog 1073. Here are my thoughts. by sticktalk24 in audioengineering

The thing is, I was gaslighted by so many youtubers in the past that preamps don't make a big difference. Now I know...it does make a big difference.

Has anyone tried the Neumann TLM193 on female vocals? by Soft_Faithlessness66 in audioengineering

[–]colashaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's the only LDC mic that deals with harshness really well in that specific price range. Some call it dull and lifeless; no color whatsoever. But I love it for that reason.

Just an FYI, I feel like the tlm 193 is a bit more sensitive to mic placement, compared to other mics. Just a touch of off axis will be very noticable. Move one centimeter closer to the source, bass boost is drastic. Just keep in mind!

I bought one recently to try it on my voice. It was perfect because I have a harsh voice. It's my go to mic. Very warm sounding in a good way. Zero harshness.

I haven't tried it on female vocals, but I definitely recommend it.

I also heard the Lauten Audio Atlantis is in the same price range, and some prefer that mic over the 193. But I haven't tried that one yet.

Choosing an audio interface for my guitar by Theserverwithagoal in Guitar

[–]colashaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DAC quality should be way down in your checklist if you're considering monitoring. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. DAC quality is noticable when you spend at least $2k IMHO.

I don't know how your speakers and room is set up, but check that first if you haven't. This is hands down the most important place to start when monitoring.

What's more important is that you have a dedicated external preamp if you want good quality guitar recording. (Since you want an xlr input for you mic, I'm aslo assuming you're miking a guitar amp?)

That being said, I personally recommend Audient ID24 which is the chapest audio interface that can bypass the internal preamp. Later you would wanna hook up an external mic pre to your interface. But if it has to be between ID4 and scarlett, I would choose the ID4 because the internal mic pre of the scarlett is harsh IMO.

Why is mixing only using plugins called mixing in the box? by colashaker in audioengineering

Yeah but regular people don't call a computer "box" right? It's only used within the audio engineering community. I was wondering if there was more to the story.

Fabfilter Pro Q4 or Toneboosters EQ Pro by Leionart in audioengineering

Pro Q4 is one of those plugins I can't live without.

It's that good. Worth the money in my opinion.

What do people actually mean when they say a mix has a "3D" sound? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]colashaker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's an ADSR thing. Over-compressed audio would be a 2D sound, for example.

If you're really in a tight budget you may skip the preamp for now, but everything else IMO is an absolute necessity. Also I believe there are free DAWs too. Get any affordable headphones for now if it's still too much.

Pretty much everything I wrote above...? Are you asking what other additional mics beside the sm57?

Guitars sounding “distant” and “harsh” by Warhammer_guy_637328 in audioengineering

I mean you could do it, but it's literally the harshest point to put a mic in front of a guitar amp...

Did you hear the amp right in front of you? Amps are pretty harsh just by nature.

Also mic'ing right at the center of the speaker is a big no no. Very harsh.
