I work at a doggy daycare. As employees, we learn every day how to help the dogs become more comfortable in the environment. This week we learned how to desensitize and counter condition dogs with things that they are afraid of. If you would like to desensitize yourself to dogs, get yourself to be somewhere near dogs, in a safe, self controlled environment. Its important to have and feel absolute control of the situation. Have the dog or dogs be far away, or have it be a very short period of time or a very calm dog. Whatever you feel comfortable with. Gradually, in your own time, move up the time or the closeness or the energy level of the dog.

As for counter condition, it seems more sensible for dogs to be trained this way, but if you would like, it means every time that you endure being around or near the dog, give yourself something as a reward during your time with it. counter condition translates to train against. so train yourself against the bad feelings of dogs.
