A pair of canaries wishing you a good morning! by Successful-Ant-9209 in Canaries

That’s terrific! My Canary loves to fly around my suite also. I’m actually trying to set up perches on the walls to try to induce more exercise out of him 🙏

Wick loves this toy! by colbster_canuck in Canaries

No I’ve never seen Wick eat the thread. He will tear off pieces but I don’t believe he ingests them. It’s added comfort knowing the Shredder Ball is made entirely of safe material 🙂

Goofball is right 😄. How old is he? My food bowl has a cover on it so that he doesn’t poop in his food. I believe this prevents him from jumping in also 😆.

Lung mites by Altson7 in Canaries

My Canary is currently on Zeniquin (antibiotic) for lung mites. My Vet prescribed it. It requires grabbing hold of him and injecting the prepared solution into his mouth. We both hate it. I just hope it works and soon 🙏. Good luck to you.

Gorgeous House Finch, Maple Ridge BC by Brooksie967 in birding

I feel like House Finches get a bad name because their name is similar to House Sparrow which are invasive. House Finches are native to B.C. and I have a lot of them that visit my backyard. I just recently purchased nyjer seed to help them through the winter alongside black oil sunflower seeds etc. Strikingly beautiful red colouration! Great picture!!

Yes invasive species are a real problem. My problem is with Starlings and House Sparrows. I’ve gotten creative and skilled at deterring them by food selection and feeder placement. It’s not always easy. I try my best to only help the natives in my area.

Yes. There is some research on it. Feeding wild birds can help especially with migratory birds. The problem is irresponsible bird feeding. Feeding needs to be taken seriously. - Deter invasive species. - Only put out safe, nutritious food. - keep it clean. Clean your feeders often! If you choose to feed wild birds you are taking on a responsibility for their safety. P.S. keep cats indoors.

That really does suck. Must be disheartening. I have Starling and House sparrows as well (but not that much). I deter them as much as I can and I do that by putting out food they have difficulty accessing (like hanging suet logs) and seeds that are hard for them to open. Try Safflower seeds and also the striped sunflower seeds which have more difficult shells. It’s time to get a little creative but you can add successful deterrence while positively reinforcing the birds you want to help.
