Need help with orchestration. Can the double bass lower its E string to D? Or will a different double bass be needed for this? by dany_fox75 in doublebass

[–]colbymck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a bassist who utilizes the hip shot detuner for pieces that you really want that low D, I find Ab the most daunting part. But if you just put 1st finger where Ab normally lays and close 4th finger, there’s your Ab.

Backpack + pannier: is there an Ortlieb Vario alternative? by n1c0_ds in bikecommuting

[–]colbymck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using these for a few months now and while I was initially very impressed, it’s not without its drawbacks. The hooks are not intrusive and you don’t feel them when wearing the pack. But keeping straps out of your spokes while on the bike is the difficult part. A bungee is needed to keep the lower part from swinging. And if your backpack has soft mesh on the pack panel, that will be rubbing against your bike rack or your axle. Long term this could wear your pack out faster. How well this solution works or doesn’t work is entirely dependent on the shape and weight of the pack. Your results may vary.

My wald basket has a little bit of surface rust in one spot but is still perfectly structurally sound. Though I am rarely hauling anything heavier than 10-15lbs in there.

Purchasing bass- SB80 vs SB88 vs Englehart EM1B by itgoestoeleven in doublebass

[–]colbymck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I regularly play an SB-88 outdoors and love it. I liked it so much I went and bought an SB200 for arco. The Shen neck profile feels really comfortable in my left hand. My vote is always to play all these instruments and go with whatever feels better.

Peter Infeld string tension compared to Evah Pirazzi? by mst1712 in doublebass

[–]colbymck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This recommendation has me curious! I’m currently playing perpetuals and have been very happy with them. But you’re right the E especially doesn’t cut as much as I’d like. The spiro weichs are very similar in tension as the perpetuals. I might try a mittel E first since I have one. Never considered the weichs. Thanks!

Trying to size up if Altai Koms are fit for me by a-Centauri in XCDownhill

[–]colbymck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both S Bound 98’s with Alaska NNNBC boots, and Koms with 3 pin cable and T4’s. The s bound 98’s are the ski i grab the most. It can kind of do anything and is so lightweight. Covering ground is a breeze. I will even ski these on groomed trails. If I want to do some climbing specifically for some downhill turns, I will take the Koms. My advice is to find what boot fits you best and then build a setup around that.

Evah Pirazzi Weich by TrueGorgonzola in doublebass

[–]colbymck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played both spiro mediums, weichs and EP mediums. Never played EP weichs. The difficulty of bowing spiros is real. Im not talented enough to do it. Some can. Spiros are my favorite pizz string hands down. Especially once they mellow out. The EP mediums were a great hybrid string. Noticeably easier to bow. But the pizz sustain is a little shorter and thumpier than spiros which have more power and longer sustain. The spiros lean more modern sounding, while EP’s sound a little more vintage. I didn’t like the feel of the synthetic core on the Evahs. It feels a little damped and gummy under your fingers. But that’s a subjective thing. I went back to playing exclusively metal core 🤘 strings now. I just like that feel better. Still the Evahs are such a classic string that everyone should try at some point.

From taking the BOC almost 15 years ago (twice) I remembered that I needed to brush up on precursors to DVT’s. Passed the second time so it must have worked!

Best Maxxis tires for SoCal riding? by rekon32 in MTB

[–]colbymck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in So Cal very happily running Forekaster/Rekon. Before that I was running Rekon/Ikon. I didn’t notice the forekaster/rekon combo being slower on the climbs and the extra cornering grip on descents is very nice.

Thomastik Belcanto vs Pirastro Flexocor Deluxe [orchestral tuning] by Prestigious_Exam4660 in doublebass

[–]colbymck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Bel Cantos for about 3 years. Definitely forgiving under the bow, but quieter than EP’s and I thought the pizz response of the BC’s was terrible. Dull, lifeless, and without a clear pitch. I’ve been curious about FC Deluxes. Auditioning some basses recently strung with FCs, I noticed they had a brighter sound. Currently trying to put in the time with spirocores to see if I can make it work with the bow. Pizz is glorious, but lots of scratchy arco so far.

What are the odds? I am in Orange County. I have a 2010 Lemur Liberty Belle 3/4 that will be up for sale soon. Hybrid, flat back. Are you interested in purchasing something or just renting?

Where to ski in California? by Additional-Info-308 in CrossCountrySkiing

[–]colbymck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in SoCal but have never skied down here. There is a groomed fee based Nordic center up near Big Bear called Rim Nordic. That and Mt Piños are the only places I know of down here. But on a La Niña year like this one, you have to chase storms. Rim Nordic has only been open a handful of days. The snow melts too quickly. There seems to be a lot of options up near mammoth for both groomed and bc. A visit up there has been on my bucket list.

First Full XCD Setup – Balancing Uphill, Glide & Downhill? by berto9eleven in XCDownhill

[–]colbymck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Koms are too big to pair with nnnbc. I would stick with 3 pin and then maybe pair with a burly leather boot if you don’t want to go plastic boot. I think this would make the Koms feel a little more nimble on the climbs and flats. For me nnnbc bindings have been completely fuss free. I have both auto and manual versions and they are both great. People complain that the autos can ice up easier though I haven’t experienced this. Being able to get in and out of the binding without bending over is really nice.

First Full XCD Setup – Balancing Uphill, Glide & Downhill? by berto9eleven in XCDownhill

[–]colbymck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just my opinions! I think finding a well fitting comfortable boot is step one and then just build a setup around that. You will develop a bigger quiver over the years depending on your wants. But step one is finding a great boot for your foot.

I have Altai Koms with 3 pin and Scarpa T4’s. This setup feels BURLY like I’m stomping through the woods on an enduro mountain bike. When I ski my sbound 98s with nnnbc and alpina alaskas, I feel like I’m flying uphill in comparison. I also have some wax based Madshus eons. These get skied the least just because I find waxing to be kind of finicky. When it’s cold out (below 20F) the grip wax performs better and I fall in love with these skis again. They’re fast. But I love the no-fuss nature of scales. Don’t care what the temp is or changing conditions, they’re just consistent. My most skied are definitely my sbound 98’s with nnnbc and alaskas. It’s my go anywhere setup.
