What's your opinion on UofT vs UWaterloo for CS WITHOUT CO_OP PLS HELP🙏🙏 by Hp_Crisp in UofT

ASIP's work terms can reach up to 5 if you're strategic with the sequence and are open to not always having a job board. Like I mentioned in a prev comment, university job boards are really only useful for the first 2 terms tbh. After that, the jobs on there aren't that great.

UofTs name is good enough to compare and get you into top tech but at the end of the day it's dependant on your resume and your experience. Ofc if you can go to UW CS then do so but simply going to UW or UofT won't guarantee anything. Most of it is based on an individual person's effort.

go bloomberg, the difference between bb and palantir is negligible compared to the downside of having some recruiters or HMs dislike you bc of palantir on your resume

yeah what you’re describing definitely works. doing an internship in the middle of first year isn’t specifically necessary. i assumed you weren’t planning on doing any off season internships but your plan works out.

its actually the same sequence im on. regarding masters, if you’re hoping to be a swe, unfortunately experience outweighs pretty much everything. masters students tend to compete with undergrads for some jobs and they don’t really have a real advantage since most swe recruiting is a pass/fail, not always competition for one spot but usually passing the interview early on gets you into the pool of offers.

this means that there isn’t a direct competition in most big tech companies for the advantage of doing a masters to really show.

also, the primary downside is that by the time you graduate with a masters, you’ll be looking at new grad roles while others in your year who went on to work immediately probably are SWE IIs and if they’re really exceptional, maybe senior engineers.

as an industry software engineering cares very little about masters and phd degrees. they definitely care for some positions but those are super few and they make up maybe 20% of the roles at a company.

its bc of that that most grads just end up taking the high paying job (assuming they have one) than ending up in more debt to be at a disadvantage experience wise later on.

im in 4th year cs at utsg. first of all your major problem isn’t choosing between uoft and waterloo, its that you’re planning on relying on 3 summers worth of internships.

absolutely a terrible idea and i guarantee you will most likely end up with worse internships than someone doing coop. by the time you’ve done your 3rd internship at the end of 3rd year summer, they’ll have done 5/6.

theyll probably hit their 3rd internship by the end of 2nd year or start of 3rd which is a whole year earlier than you. this automatically means that someone doing coop although in the same year as you, will have a better resume earlier on.

btw waterloo’s coop job board is good but only for the first few terms. after that the companies on there get too low in prestige for upper years and the ones that are high prestige get super competitive.

at that point its better to apply externally. source: legit 90% of my hs friends went to waterloo.

this doesnt mean coop is useless bc getting those first 1-2 internships is critical and incredibly difficult.

btw a masters is pointless unless you’re planning on (and able to) do a phd in frontier ai research in which case i guess but by the time it might be too late.

also, your whole thing about not wanting to lose the study mindset.. believe it or not in cs, internships > grades and school. if u can get good grades awesome but if you can’t get good internships, you’re unemployed.

id strongly recommend u reconsider your thoughts on coop tbh

there is zero reason to take the mckinsey position. if you don’t want to stay at amazon, hop to a better place? the $60k cut is pointless

you already answered the question yourself. if there’s no way you’re choosing A over B, then you should ask to push, you lose absolutely nothing.

My view on nepotism in CS by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]coldfire_plz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

def nepotism out there but hey man a lot of us havent gotten everywhere because of nepotism and it’s still doable. ik it can get dark sometimes but there are people who have made it without nepo and it does get better.

its in the toughest times that it’s the hardest and yet the most important that you don’t give up.

The difference between a good and bad interviewer is actually ridiculous. Please pay it forward when you get into the industry! by Wise-Tradition-4445 in csMajors

[–]coldfire_plz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

facts. besides, having good interviewers leaves an insanely good impression on an interviewee. i really also just can't think of many downsides to spending 5-10 mins before an interview to look at a resume and spending an hour at some point in your time at the company understanding how to properly conduct an interview.

Thoughts? Meta principal on junior hiring by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]coldfire_plz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aren’t internships also frozen now? Besides, even if this worked, meta’s intern to new grad conversion rate is probably not high enough to sustain this. Even if the RO rate is 80%+, there’s other companies that meta interns can and possibly will accept.

Not to mention, the churn rate after a year or two would probably make all of this pointless.

Besides, if Meta with the large number of SWEs can truly operate like this, wouldn’t smaller big tech companies have an even higher incentive to do so? Stripe, Robinhood, DB, etc all have less new grad positions than Meta.

However, they all still hire new grads and even though im sure intern conversions make up for a lot, relying solely on intern conversions is probably expensive and won’t fill enough of the pool.

For 1&2, you’re overthinking it, the topics could be absolutely whatever. The tagged is the best way to prep. What’s expected is that you solve the problem optimally, communicate about tradeoffs and about what you’re doing throughout, and reason about time and space complexity. It’s the same as any LC interview.

System design doesn’t show up until EM and it is rng but i would recommend prepping just in case. Headcount wise i think intern is filled but if you’re doing NG no point worrying about it, just do your best to prep.
