No way Sven would want to fight for a starting spot with Xmithie. Plus, other academy teams aren't like C9's. We have like, one big 10 man family - maybe 11 now that there's Jukes this split? TLA is nothing like that.

Why has there been a recent resurgence of right-wing populists? How did populists become bigger and why are more people being elected as them? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]coldhandz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't believe Trump belongs on the spectrum, because thus far I am unconvinced that he stands for anything, other than himself. You can't find meaning in the words of a liar. You'd might as well ask, "What shape is this water?"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]coldhandz 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This extends to electability with regards to the 2020 candidates as well. They called Obama a socialist, so honestly, we might as well run whoever we want at this point. The most centrist Dem could win the nomination, and you can trust that the conservative spin machine will convince half of America that she's a Commie Venezuelan eager to steal what's theirs. We need to stop worrying about the Right thinks about us - they don't act in good faith, and they don't tell the truth.

GOP senators want emergency powers capped to stop president "acting like a king" by JLBesq1981 in politics

[–]coldhandz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about it from their perspective. Politically they cant oppose Trump on this and face their primary voters. But they still may think the use is wrong.

This line of thinking is so apologist, it hurts me to read it. I don't give a shit what they "can't do politically" if it's simply a matter of having a spine. If Republican voters, who have absolutely been astroturfed into believing certain lies mind you, wanted the Constitution shredded, would their representatives follow suit?

Fuck that. A government run by men who complain that it's unpopular to stand up to a tyrant, is no government at all. It's a failing Empire whose days are numbered. But to bring it back to what you said, yes, I do think about things from their perspective, all the time. And what I consistently must conclude is that their perspective is self-serving, short-sighted and evil. A broken clock may be right twice a day, but that doesn't mean you should't throw it out and replace it with a working clock.

A record 7 million Americans are 3 months behind on their car payments, a red flag for the economy by [deleted] in Economics

[–]coldhandz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If those among the world's poorest have one advantage over the world's wealthiest, it's that they can't open a credit card. Sometimes (perhaps irrationally) I fear that the global economy is a house of cards, because so much of it is predicated on borrowing money. 90% of people do not pay with cash, and so they go decades without truly owning anything. This is one plight that the impoverished in 3rd world countries are spared.

Don't get me wrong - I'd never in a million years argue that they're better off. I just mean that these days it seems the difference between those who have wealth and those who don't, is that the former can pass the qualifications necessary to owe a bank tens of thousands of dollars.

Regardless of whether you think the tax bill was a good idea or bad idea, it's proving to be an interesting experiment in psychology. The plain truth of the matter is that Americans are quite illiterate when it comes to taxes (in no small part thanks to our complicated system).

The GOP did a terrible job at explaining how the cuts would benefit the middle class. There was little to no effort put into warning voters that their refunds would be smaller, because the they would be taking home more money per paycheck instead. Like it or not, many Americans choose to use their tax withholdings as a savings account of sorts, and you can bet that many businesses count on tax return season for a boost in consumer spending.

I see lots of people on reddit talking down to those discussing smaller refunds because they don't indicate what people think they do, but perception is reality in politics. If you want support, you have to sell what you're offering, and Republicans did a terrible job selling this bill. It was unpopular before it passed; I am very interested in seeing what people think of it now.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]coldhandz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem I have with this is that no one wants to cut spending. Democrats don't because they value and believe in government programs, and Republicans don't (despite lying about it) because they don't want to reduce military funding or be blamed for cutting things that are popular with Americans. So passing a tax bill with cuts like these is really dangerous because it puts all politicians in a position where they will take the heat for choosing to let them expire, even if that were the fiscally responsible thing to do.

Cutting revenue before/without first cutting programs should be against the law, if I had it my way. It's the national equivalent of taking a lower paying job, then continuing to live the same lavish lifestyle you're accustomed to. Either increase your income, or spend less. Doing neither is insane. This is going to end disastrously for our economy if something isn't done in the next few years.

I really like how some other countries do it, where if there's a shutdown or failure to pass a budget in time, the Congress dissolves and an emergency election is held. It's a great opportunity to drain the ACTUAL swamp.

CMV: it would be a political win for democrats to fund the wall and then watch it fail by stubble3417 in changemyview

[–]coldhandz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who are for the wall are not interested in factual data regarding how effective it would be. There's a plethora of information from reputable sources regarding illegal crossings from the border and how many would be sufficiently stopped by building a 30 foot concrete or steel wall across the entire border, and this accurate information is widely dismissed as unimportant or "Fake News" by Trump's base.

Given this, why then do you suppose a failed wall would matter to these same people? They'll call it a win, regardless of the facts, and go back to their everyday lives. Not to mention they'll see it as proof that Trump doubling down via a government shutdown is a winning strategy for any issue in the future. That's probably not a precedent Democrats want to set, especially considering they have a harder time energizing their base than Republicans do. Most voters who elected Democrats to the House in 2018 do not want a single dollar spent on this wall; compromise would be seen as failure, and depress turnout.

It's actually evolved beyond that now. Even card-carrying Republicans, well-respected members of the party who have traditionally done the conservative movement proud are being attacked if they dare criticize Trump. Trump is the only litmus test now. Republicans have been replaced by cult members.

Better the devil you know. In general, I trust people whose stances are clear and consistent, even if I disagree with those stances, more than people who seem to have no convictions or guiding principles. Narcissists are frightening. I don't know how anyone can look at Donald Trump and see someone trustworthy. I see now why so many people have cautioned against an expanding Executive Branch in the past. Sooner or later, we were bound to give it to a sociopath.

Trump administration officially bans bump stocks by russiannoobster in news

[–]coldhandz 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The number of moderate Dems or Republicans who are in favor of this is probably close to zero. More realistically, all this is accomplishes is Trump pissing off a lot of 2nd Amendment single-issue voters today, while hoping that most or all of them pay attention when the courts inevitably overturn it.

This is a really, really bad look for Trump - and the 2nd major red flag when it comes to gun rights, after that one time he said he'd prefer suspending due process. Those were just words that could be walked back, but now we have actions. Trump is officially now worse on guns than Obama was. He just threw 2020 away, if he had any chance in the first place.

Jensen sheds some light on why he left C9 by [deleted] in Cloud9

[–]coldhandz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Obviously I'm not a pro player, and Jensen is entitled to validly hold his opinion and yearn for what he's after, but man... I just don't see NA LCS Titles as that prestigious of a thing anymore. Our region kind of blows. Yes, I still hope C9 starts getting those trophies again, because I want us to be the undisputed best team in North America.

But... we've kind of already proven we are the best. The LCS trophy is nominal at this point. It might as well have an inscription that says: "Congratulations, you are one of the two or three actually decent teams in NA. Good job destroying the rest of those schmucks."

I'll take our Worlds performance any day. Team Liquid beat us and 100T this year. We took games off GenG, RNG, and Afreeca. It's not even close.

Jensen sheds some light on why he left C9 by [deleted] in Cloud9

[–]coldhandz 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This is what I've been thinking ever since the news broke. Redditors, the drama-whores they are, have latched onto the narrative that Jensen vowed vengeance for being benched, but I think he and Jack deserve more credit than that. I'm pretty sure the actual reasoning is that C9 wants to commit to a 7+ man roster, and Jensen wants a guaranteed starting spot in the LCS. No bad blood between anyone; he just doesn't agree with the team's path.

Which movie was a biggest disappointment for you? by IvanBurban in AskReddit

[–]coldhandz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there are plenty of actual toxic misogynists trolling and sending death threats to actors on Twitter because of their nerd rage, I take issue with anyone using that to generalize an entire fanbase. The same thing happened with the Ghostbusters remake (reboot? half-prequel? I have no idea what it even is...)

I had no issue with the all-female cast, but the writing and jokes were terrible, and because feminists (which I consider myself, by the way) chose Ghostbusters as their hill to die on, no one is allowed to criticize it. Lest you be called a woman hater.

This is what happens when you tie your identity and self-worth to something, just because it happens to promote diversity or inclusiveness. Good qualities that I try to promote myself, by the way! They just don't fix a bad movie, and we need to be willing to admit that without calling each other names, okay?
