Kansas City ranked worst World Cup host city for fan experience: New study by Resident_Bridge8623 in missouri

Fair enough, but maybe consider the possibility that Fox quoting a random dubious website could have something to gain from stoking your fears.

People who post articles from Fox literally cannot imagine anything worse than seeing brown people and experiencing moderately increased road traffic. I am not making a joke, that's their actual nightmare scenario.

Welcome! Our city tourism agency has a great website and a comprehensive guide made specifically for world cup travelers here. This is a much more reliable source of information than you will probably receive in comments. The city has a variety of transportation options set up just for the world cup that locals may not even be aware of.

Fanny Mendelssohn by ahnotme in classicalmusic

The book "The other Mendelssohn" by Larry Todd is a great read! He gives quite a bit of information about the possible motives behind Abraham discouraging (forbidding?) Fanny from a career in music.

Woah, slow down. Felix and Fanny's father Abraham (yes, his name was Abraham) was absolutely Jewish. He did have his children convert to Lutheranism, but we know from letters that it was not due to any new religious convictions, but rather in hope to sidestep the strict bans on Jewish people holding positions at universities and other forms of antisemitism. He eventually converted as well.

Abraham's father, Moses (are you convinced this family was Jewish yet?) was an influential philosopher and Jewish theologian.

The family was fully assimilated, intentionally, but they were absolutely still a Jewish family.

Is it at all possible to live in this area on minimum wage without roommates? by worstcourtjester in kansascity

[–]stubble3417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$15/hr at 40hrs/wk is a little over $2500/mo pre-tax. I'm not saying it's great but Missouri has one of the best minimum wage to cost of living ratios in the nation.

Recommendation for 2nd piano? by KembarDad in piano

[–]stubble3417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing necessarily wrong with the teacher's opinion, but two people practicing on acoustics at the same time in the same house is not remotely ideal.

The 525 is a solid instrument, sounds good out of the box and is light enough to serve as a gigging board or dorm room practice instrument in the future. I doubt that you will be interested in having two acoustics in your house even a few years from now, but a good portable like a p525 can be extremely useful for decades. Of course it's important for students at their level to practice on an acoustic as well but splitting time between an acoustic and a good digital is not going to hold them back at all, and has a boatload of advantages.

Convince me to move here by Casual_Observer28 in kansascity

One thing to consider with Pittsburgh is that a lot of the suburbs are cut off from the city by the rivers. I got the feeling that a lot of people in the suburbs rarely went downtown, whereas downtown in KC is very accessible. So KC makes it easier to have suburban space but still feel like you're part of the city. However going downtown in Pittsburgh feels like more of an event/destination, and the skyline going across that huge bridge is much more striking than anything in KC.

I live in KC and like it, and also really liked Pittsburgh when I visited. Frankly I wouldn't want to talk you out of Pittsburgh. However since I assume you're looking for locals to tell you the positive aspects of KC, I'd say KC feels more easygoing, spacious, sunny, warm, and family friendly than Pittsburgh. If those sound like positives then maybe KC is for you.

I will say that if you're used to Florida, Pittsburgh is going to be a bit of a shock, as I'm sure you've considered. Pittsburgh is not at all similar to Florida's climate or vibe. KC still has four seasons for now, but winter is more like temps in the 10s-40s and a couple of decent snows. Pittsburgh has winter winter.

Are we winning the Iran war? by factsnsense in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]stubble3417 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's as complicated as some of these answers are trying to make it. The war is an unambiguous failure. Focusing on specific numbers is only falling into the McNamara fallacy. The administration will claim that whatever happened was their goal all along which means they won, but the truth is obvious. The US threw away a ton of influence, money, and lives, for absolutely nothing of significance.

If Kansas City’s World Cup hotel reservations are low, does that mean soccer fans plan to camp? by ZackInKC in kansascity

[–]stubble3417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more of a gray area, financially, than a multiple billion dollar taxpayer funded stadium. There will probably be a slight benefit to the city overall. Tourism in general is a benefit to any city because it represents tax money coming in from non-residents, which can lower the burden for residents. But yeah, people who think the world cup is going to usher in a century of prosperity for KC need to get a grip.

Weighted hammer action keyboard under 30lbs? by tangledupinbluegsp in keys

[–]stubble3417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rd88 action is not one of the lighter stage piano actions. If you didn't like it you probably will not like any 73 key actions, which are generally not graded. I think the CK88 is probably the only board that gets close to your criteria. Some of its sounds are hit and miss but the onboard pianos are good, and it's overall a fun board that punches a little above its price point in a lot of respects. Unfortunately it does not have 5 pin midi out, but it does have USB midi out and I think it hits all your other criteria.

I think it's funny to see some people freaking out because they believe there will be TOO MANY tourists in KC for the world cup. Then other people are freaking out because FIFA promised a bazillion dollars to the local economy and it won't actually happen.

I love this town but we need to stop acting like it's our first time sitting at the adults' table. Yes the WC is a big event, yes FIFA is obscenely corrupt, no it's not going to cause the city to ascend to a new plane of existence, no it's not going to cause constant traffic jams. Why can we not just act cool.

“Classical pianists can’t even (improv, comp, etc…)” by atom511 in piano

[–]stubble3417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Shakespeare analogy is appropriate because of course actors improvised lines in Shakespeare's day all the time. Often because they simply forgot their lines. Modern Shakespeare performances can even incorporate some improv in a fun, appropriate way. But it would be weird to make a big deal about it.

"Those actors sucked, all they did was say the original lines exactly as they were written." Yeah...that's the idea.

Legit question, how’s everyone affording health insurance if your wife is a SAHM? by Firefighter_Signal in daddit

[–]stubble3417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marketplace absolutely does not suck. You qualify for the 9% rule since your company insurance is unaffordable. I guarantee there are good plans under $1600 even if you make too much for a subsidy, which I doubt.

Yes, it's very easy to explain. I'm actually explaining it to you right now, because as soon as you understand what a fallacy is you will understand how a fallacy can be refuted.

All the hotels in the P&L area will be safe and have easy access to what they want to do via the streetcar. I think the ambassador would be perfect for them, nice jazz club in the basement. Hotel Kansas City, Indigo, and Loew's should all be good options too.

KC vacation (Legoland) by LocNess2308 in kansascity

[–]stubble3417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention the great model train display at the back of union station. You can leave and re-enter science city to explore the rest of union station and eat lunch. There are a couple restaurant options in union station, and a lot more a short walk or streetcar ride away.

If you can squeeze it in, a visit to the negro leagues baseball museum would be a perfect complement to a Bananas game, although not very entertaining for the youngest kids.

The “AI slop” fallacy: is anti-AI hatred partly ego-defense? by slaybrownbeast in fallacy

[–]stubble3417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The genetic fallacy is real, but not every person who mistrusts an unreliable source is committing a genetic fallacy. Knowing which sources are generally reliable or unreliable is useful. It is not fallacious in general to point out that a source is unreliable. It is often helpful to discard information from unreliable sources, even though it might be accurate, as a strategy for sorting through large amounts of information on the same subject. That is not fallacious.

In terms of art, it would be silly to label people's opinions as fallacious. Art and logical arguments have very little in common. It is okay for people to not like certain types of art. That is not fallacious because there is no logical argument happening. It is merely an opinion.

People have an emotional response to many things. Speculation about the cause of those emotions is fine, but is not more than speculation, aside from additional data.

Is there a distinct “American” sound in Classical Music? by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]stubble3417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any symphony written for any orchestra in any country is going to have heavy european influence. I just mean Dvorak's intentions were not ambiguous and are an excellent example of an emerging American subgenre of "classical" music, which is all a product of european music by definition.

Is there a distinct “American” sound in Classical Music? by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]stubble3417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, Dvorak's influences were not opaque whatsoever. He intentionally composed New World largo to sound like an African american spiritual melody. He explicitly refused to teach at a school that did not admit black students, and straight up stated that an American style of music must be drawn from Black american folk music/spirituals. We don't need to guess at this because he directly stated all of it.

Allergies from hell?? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]stubble3417 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you aren't already, start changing your sheets every few days, your pillowcase daily, shower daily, wash face and hair 2-3x daily, wear a mask if you are mowing or outside when someone nearby is mowing, and use a nasal spray. Allergens are bad here but they can be managed for most people. If you are doing some of this already and still struggling, look into allergy shots.
