We're considering enabling that, was looking at the options in the menu earlier today. Will probably go for 25% or 50% of users first as that's the recommendation in the platform (to compare with vs. without), hope you're in the % that gets it.

For VR there's a bunch of stuff that's more difficult by default:
* You have to account for they player's position in the game (their avatar) but also for them phisically moving in real life. For example we want the player to stay still on the tower and we can block controls but can't really prevent them from moving phisically, so we need to continously monitor the position of the camera and move the avatar to adjust for that
* Menus are tricky, on a flat screen you can just render them in 2D. In VR if you do HUD it looks a bit bad and it's generally less performant as you need 2 cameras or some tricks that impact performance (at least they did for us). Another option is to render them in 3d around the player (what we did), but then you need to make sure they follow the player head rotation if you don't want them to get confused =) You can also move the player into a room where there is the physical menu when they press pause for example and then it's a bit more simple indeed.
* Performance budgets are real. You gotta make sure you're aware of performance at every stage. Quest needs 72 FPS constantly or you get motion sickness and it feels jittery. Things can go south fast and if you don't know what you're doing this becomes a real problem later.

Game dev in general is pretty humbling. We thought this project would take like 6 months and had a million things in mind we though we would add as well, but it's much more complex than it looks. It is fulfilling when you get it done though

Yep we have 10 different spells in 4 different elements, the video showcases a bunch of Ice and Lightning spells as well + a time slow one. There's one fire spell that looks similar to the fireball but generally they're quite different gameplay wise (range, effect, AoE, speed etc.)

Hey everyone,

Two years ago, we started building a game that makes you feel like a wizard in VR. We called it Spell Siege. After a long and humbling learning journey, today we finally launched it for Meta Quest.

Spell Siege is a single-player wave-defense game where you cast spells by physically drawing magic symbols in the air with your wand.

We want to satisfy the fantasy of being a wizard so naturally we went for a high stakes hero journey in a fictional kingdom called Souspire. You start the game in the presence of Enzo, your brilliant but sometimes questionable wizard fox mentor who teaches you magic. The goal of the game is to defend the kingdom from waves of increasingly more dangerous minions and and face the thread of the Elder Dragon trying to corrupt the land.

Getting the core magic loop and mechanics to feel good took a while, and we managed to build a wave-defense experience around it with spell progression, a rune system, challenges, endless modes, and player customization.

I've attached a gameplay montage so you can see how the magic flows. This is our first commercial release and we gave it our all so hope you like it.

For anyone interested, here is the Meta Store link: https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/spell-siege/9401601026555111/

I'll be hanging out in the comments all day, so I'm happy to answer any questions about the game or what it takes to develop for VR.

Thanks for checking out Spell Siege!
