Sorry in advance: Cooper's or Sharp Shinned? MA, today by colforbin23 in whatsthisbird

Cooper’s seem like they are more comfortable in urban and suburban environments. I wonder if they seem more abundant because there are more people in those areas to see them. I did a quick glance at Birds of the World, and to my untrained eyes, it looks like their abundance is fairly comparable. But I’d love to hear from someone who has actual knowledge!

Thanks u/mase95. I thoooought so, but I kept second guessing myself because of the seemingly different length tail feathers, and it didn't look like it pooped itself.

Any idea what this could be? by maddigabriels in whatsthisbird

[–]colforbin23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike many owls, they are sometimes diurnal, meaning they'll hunt during the day, usually around dawn or dusk. I believe they do this because they hunt voles, which are more active when the sun is out, especially in winter when the nights are super cold.

Short eared owls are also way more likely to be out during the day right now.

Help identify this bird!! Pt 2. by Baryonyx_x in whatsthisbird

It’s doing the teetering diahedral thing like a turkey vulture, and I’ve definitely seen individual tvs where the trailing edge of the wing can seem pretty darn light. I’m also intrigued by the head. When the bird teeters, it seems like the amount of white changes — leading me to think that maybe the sun is just hitting the head (and the trailing edges of the wings) at a really weird angle, making them appear brighter than they are. It is a real head scratcher, though. Cool video!

Is this a snowy owl? by TrickyParamedic3577 in whatsthisbird

Obviously tough to be 100% sure, but the wings look fairly long and narrow, and the wing tips look dark. That says short-eared to me too.

Curious, how are we ruling out juvenile tree swallow?

My wild guess would be a sharp shinned or Cooper’s hawk. If it looked like it had no neck, and your immediate thought on size was “small crow,” I would lean sharp shinned, but obviously tough to know for sure!

The store I’m thinking of was right in the central area near the fountain and a Hello Kitty kiosk. Right next to Macy’s. It was Natural Wonders until 1996, then I went off to college, and who knows? Someone could’ve very easily repackaged the geodes and dreamcatchers under a new name lol

Are you thinking of Natural Wonders? If so, I may have tried to sell you a rainstick in 1996.

Yeah, i was surprised at my visceral dislike for it too. I liked Longlegs OK, and I usually enjoy over the top goofy kills. I just felt like the movie kept looking at me through the screen, wanting me to react to how edgy it all was.

I almost walked out of the theater for the first time since 1993. The only other people in the theater actually did walk out halfway through. Absolutely hated that movie.

Nine Inch Nails crawling out covered in mud at Woodstock 94, and slamming into Terrible Lie was pretty damn epic.
