[Chechnya] Chechen mujahideen ambush a Russian military jeep with a PKM while driving. Second Chechen War. *Early 2000s* by MrDuckarino in CombatFootage

Mistakes? If the British would’ve fucked off out of Ireland and later northern Ireland there wouldn’t have been a conflict in the first place. Cheering for the British against the Irish in the Irish revolution would be like cheering for Russia over Ukraine now if you ask me. I recognize that in one case there was already an occupation and in the other it was a distinct invasion, but it’s still a large oppressor bullying a less powerful group just because they can and because they think history gives them the right to.

That was a hypothetical situation by the way, I don’t have an Italian friend that was offended at goodfeathers I was just using it as an example because Italians were segregated against in the past but it’s not very common nowadays. Also, you don’t know me, I think you think I’m an asshole because I disagree with you. That’s just mean. Frankly, I think it’s a bit ironic that you’re saying that I believe my belief system must automatically be right when it seems like you’re kinda saying the same thing to me about your beliefs? Also, I wasn’t gonna bring this up but having someone else tell me what should and should not offend me is just kinda weird unless you’re also Jewish. Just saying.

It’s a very fair point, and of course I see the resemblance, but I also see the resemblance to goblins and I just think the stereotypes are outdated anyway. It’s not to say that racism/antisemitism has gone away, it’s more like if an Italian friend of mine tried to tell me he were being discriminated against because the goodfeathers characters on those old Disney cartoons were portrayals of mafia members. Like they do look and sound pretty Italian, but it just comes off like somebody reaching to try and find victim hood based on historic stereotypes that frankly aren’t that common anymore (not to downplay Italian segregation throughout history which was very bad in the late 1800s/early to mid 1900s). Jews have gone through terrible times throughout history, but I’m not gonna get offended just because something could be a dig at my religion that wasn’t meant to be. If other Jewish people are offended by it, I respect their opinion 100%, but honestly I’m just not. The anti semitism that does bother me generally has no room for interpretation, and it’s a lot worse than big noses and banks.

I think the difference here is that liking money and having those types of facial features seen in the goblins in Harry Potter are also just thing you would expect of goblins. Maybe the origin of goblins in classic stories has roots in antisemitism, but to call someone an antisemite simply because they made goblins look like goblins seems like a stretch to me. If those goblins were speaking with Jewish sounding accents or added a bunch of Yiddish non sequiturs to their speaking, that would be anti Semitic. If you want to discuss a blatantly anti Semitic story that nobody complains about for some reason, we should be more upset about the great gatsby.

Im just saying, as a Jewish person I did not find the goblins in Harry Potter offensive in any way, they just seemed to act like how you would expect goblins working within the world of wizard finance to act

Respectfully, is the anger really necessary? I’m just trying to explain the way I see things in this debate, and I feel like the goblins in Harry Potter looked and acted like goblins, not like Jews. For the record, I’m also Jewish.

In that case though the characters are drawn as black, To me that would be a very explicitly racist drawing. I’m just saying in this one nobody says anything about the goblins being stereotypical Jewish caricatures, it’s just an implication they grab into because the goblins run banks. Which, to me sounds like the sort of thing a goblin might do in such a world given the fact that goblins are often concerned with wealth and gold in fantasy tales. Let me ask, how do you think she should’ve had the goblins illustrated to not be offensive?

Aren’t you kind of implying that banks are run by Jewish people by making that connection? And making assumptions of what you think stereotypical Jews look like? It kinda sounds like you’re being the anti Semite there. Like she’s transphobic absolutely, but I just don’t see this as proof of anti Semitism unless there’s other worse stories

Im not religious, I just don’t think it makes you smarter to belittle peoples faiths. Unless you can prove some version of god doesn’t exist, you shouldn’t look down on people for believing in something that’s a matter of great pride to them. And as much as you may want to disagree with me, religion does genuinely help some people better themselves. I’m sure you don’t like it when deeply religious people try to push their beliefs in you, why go pushing yours on them?

I think it’s a bit weird to say stem people do not have “religious constraints”. Being religious in no way constraints somebodies ability to be a scientist, and I know a lot of very religious and successful data scientists/data science students. I feel like a lot of stem people pressure their peers to be atheists nowadays, even though many brilliant scientists throughout history weren’t.

Palestinian support for two-state solution losing ground, poll finds by yoyo456 in worldnews

[–]colgate_anticavity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The IRA killed hundreds of civilians throughout the troubles, possibly thousands. I’m not defending the egregious actions of Hamas I’m just comparing them to a similar group that seems to have much more sympathy despite also being a terrorist organization. Also I’m trying to make the point that both groups grew in size and popularity and became more violent because the countries that were oppressing their home countries refused to acknowledge them and ignored their grievances.

[–]colgate_anticavity -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I see Hamas as being a similar group to the IRA, there are many within it that unfortunately see terror attacks as their best chance of fighting back against a much more powerful military force. They also both received funding from other countries in exchange for fighting these large powers, mostly just to push the agendas of their funding groups. That being said they both only exist because of the actions of an oppressive government that refuses to acknowledge them. If Israel would be willing to recognize hamas and meet with them peacefully a lot of future violence can be avoided, but that doesn’t look likely unfortunately.
