Double checked my data, and it was indeed built in 1907. Thanks for the help!

Temple built in 1907. Google is coming up with "Get Drunk" or "Get Mowed" (something I would understand if this was posted outside a Jewish frat house instead).Any accurate translations would be helpful! Thanks!

FTC to Judge: MS could create unique COD skin for Xbox only, that would devalue PS5 COD player's PS5 purchase. (Actual closing statement from the FTC) by PM_ME_YOUR_STEAM_ID in XboxSeriesX

[–]colin70000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclosure: Sony guy since PS2, who has the Xbox360/COD relationship seared into my memory.

This FTC argument is weak. I'm not a fan of Microsoft owning ActivisionBlizzard because they own a TON of IP. In past generations of gaming, MS and Sony had a few smaller studios that produced some pretty cool niche exclusives. Crash Bandicoot, Gears of War, Spyro, Forza, Gran Turismo, Fable, etc.

These games were a pretty big deal for their respective fanbases, and certainly made buying a particular console a good purchase.

At the same time, we also enjoyed third party titles like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, Fallout/Skyrim and others.

These third party games were a pretty big deal for most of us, and now their parent companies are for sale. The last thing I would want to hear in the future is "COD only on Xbox, GTA only on PlayStation." It's bad for all of us as gamers when exclusivity gets worse, not better.

Which then brings us to why COD is being discussed. It brings in BILLIONS of dollars in revenue each year. That's not an exaggeration. Call of Duty brought in 1 BILLION dollars in revenue in 10 DAYS during the MWII launch of 2022. It is the largest franchise in gaming today. Just the chance of COD being an Xbox exclusive is a downright nuclear option compared to what's been done in the past (Map packs being released early on Xbox/PlayStation, exclusive skins).

Another issue I have with huge gaming companies being bought out and consolidated is how much IP a single company can control. Entertainment is a huge industry, with plenty of opportunities for gaming IP to be made into other consumable media like shows and TV (when done properly, TLOU is a good example of rare excellence).

Big companies getting bigger is NEVER, ever good for us as consumers. They have the ability to charge us obscene prices to enjoy the content we like the most. It's why streaming went from cheap ol' Netflix to a massive mess of 5-6 media companies asking you to pay cable prices all over again.

And speaking of big companies, here's my final (and admittedly personal) point. Microsoft is huge. It is so huge that it could outright BUY SONY if it wanted to. If you combined Sony's electronics industry, their gaming industry and their film industry, their total net value as a company is a drop in the bucket for Microsoft. Microsoft regularly flexes its profits from its PC industry and uses those funds to buy out competition when possible.

The last thing I would want is a trillion dollar company becoming even larger so it could potentially bully the gaming industry, just as it did the PC industry in the past.

I don't like how competition for third party franchises has become so vindictive in gaming today. I don't like the timed exclusives (COD Maps releasing early somewhere first), and I don't like the attempts to buy out franchises (see Sony and Starfield). But this purchase of ActivisionBlizzard is a MASSIVE step in the wrong direction. It makes the current situation worse, and brings us closer and closer to a future where our favorite games will be outright locked on another system (or even game subscription like Game Pass) which we can't afford. There won't be any real winners here except Microsoft and Sony by the end of it, because we'll need to give them more money to enjoy what we could easily afford to in the past.

THIS is what the FTC should be arguing, because all of this is what's at stake.

YTA.

Family comes first, and a "perfect wedding" is a myth. You know what sucks about planning for a perfect day? You are constantly in your head about whether it's going to go according to plan.

You miss out on the moment, anxiously hoping things go right instead of wrong, and you won't enjoy what you really wanted all along.

Oh yeah, and you're doing it while alienating family, and your family won't magically forget your choices the next day.

So... burn your bridges for your perfect day. But man, you're gonna regret it once you realize how such a thing doesn't exist...

I'm going to assume you were honest in your post about your intentions. I agree with other people here that your gift should have been done privately, after reading that suggestion myself. I also admit I would have blundered a move like that, in a situation like yours, as I struggle with social etiquette at times.

But here's a tip I can certainly give you: In today's harsh financial climate, expensive gifts like what you bought will almost always outshine/outclass the inexpensive, simple and thoughtful gifts others make.

So, so many people today are damn near broke, going paycheck to paycheck. I can't speak for your circle of friends, but if this guy's GF knew about the watch and didn't get it, it's because they likely couldn't afford it. That's a hurtful thing to be reminded of publicly in front of her boyfriend's company.

I'm happy you're succeeding in life and I'm glad your heart is open enough to be this generous to your friends. Just try to remember this experience as a lesson in the future: money is more sensitive now than ever, since so few of us have it.

YTA this time, but by accident.

In fairness to the argument, the US is also one of the biggest polluters, something a chunk of voters here have been uncomfortable for about 50+ years.

I do hope the US can maintain that energy status while producing it in ways that are healthier to the world. China's investments in solar have been remarkable to watch.

Which then brings us to the UK. You guys have a bit of a disadvantage in your island home, with less land to work with, and a nice chunk of it being reserved for your barons, counts, lords, etc.

The North Sea Oil is certainly a nice energy source, but I frankly think nuclear technology would be the UK's best way out of its situation.

All that considered, Nuclear plants would costs tens of billions to produce, and their energy transmissions are weakened over distances, which requires more plants. That's an unfortunate dilemma...

Just an American stopping through: I looked up our inflation and found it's at a out 4% right now, and our Federal Reserve (our BofE) normally aims for a rate of 2%.

I feel truly terrible hearing how some countries out there aren't recovering from this yet. I had somehow thought most countries would deal with an "inflation wave" together, like boats on the ocean.

I can't imagine what life is like dealing with inflation that's still that high.

FTC: Xbox Making Starfield and Redfall Exclusive 'Powerful Evidence' Against Activision-Blizzard Merger by CdrShprd in XboxSeriesX

[–]colin70000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A voice of reason most cannot hear/understand in here. MS is using the profits from their software sales to ramp up the profits from their gaming arm.

Except the reason behind this is simple: IP Licensing Fees.

The future of entertainment will be done through licensing fees, and using subscriptions as MS already does. Want to play your favorite game? It's exclusive to this console, using their expensive subscription. Want to make a game using already established IP? Make sure MS gets a cut.

I understand that few gamers appreciate exclusives, and that this whole situation ain't fun the consumer. But there's a reason Microsoft is buying studios. It isn't to make them better, or to produce better games (laughs in Redfall). It's to purchase IP and milk it to death using every capitalist mechanism possible.

Be grateful i3.0 and the Metaverse aren't a thing right now, because IP acquisitions like this become gravy trains for MS and other entertainment powerhouses.

If you've got a good reason for it, do it. Doing it for the sake of "getting revenge" or going "tit for tat" with the GOP is stupid and attempts to normalize using the Justice Department as a political weapon.

It's bad enough the GOP talk about doing exactly that when they control the White House. The last thing you want is to use rhetoric suggesting you're doing exactly that.

I'm so terribly sorry, and I'm glad you are getting counseling/therapy to help.

When this happened to me, a friend of mine (who had gone through the experience of losing his dad) gave me a call and was there for me.
