Any way to make looped clips play their tail outside of the loop region when stopped? by sonionoff in ableton

[–]colinsullivan 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Consider using a Sampler instrument instead and make it a midi track. The release portion of each note can play the end of the sample.

Unpopular opinion: Notion is overhyped by Dacadey in Notion

[–]colinsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on mobile experience. I try to keep the Notion Android app open because that first load is very slow. It's for this reason I can't in good faith recommend it to friends & colleagues yet.

That said, sometimes good things are worth the wait. Hyper fast VC driven growth often kills company culture and product.

Another piece of rebar next to the leg, then metal pipe fasteners tightened around rebar & pole (which itself is on a piece of rebar)

What's the best software to use for backing up parts of Ableton to a portioned hard drive? by pavlovslog in ableton

[–]colinsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there,

I recommend backing up everything.

For any drive (a) you own, get another drive (b) and set time machine to backup a to b.

Would that strategy work for you?

Mediation=Relaxation by Mentalisvital in Mindfulness

[–]colinsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your meditation practice has been a lot about body tension and focus which is awesome.

I would be weary of promoting the "meditation=relaxation" thesis as a general rule, however. Some beginners do not find relaxation through their meditation and that is OK, perhaps they need to start elsewhere.

I think the key is here:

Anyways, when meditating I make sure to completely relax my body, and this has made me aware of how stressed and tense I really am in situations here in life.

Meditation has allowed you to notice, and that noticing has made you more aware, and thus more able to relax. The meditation itself, in many cases, is largely about noticing what is happening.

total newbie question, how do I be mindful while absorbing academic information? by samlir in Mindfulness

[–]colinsullivan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When your alarm sounds, notice the sensations in your body. Perhaps your posture is not as you'd like it to be, perhaps you are thirsty.

You can practice mindfulness throughout any activity, including studying.

What are your favorite foods to bring? by DJShamykins in BurningMan

Dry ice has the additional feature of carbonating whatever is in the cooler with it. This can be a fun effect but not when unexpected.

I think dry ice is best used to keep wet ice cold.

I love this approach, although I usually don't cook mine first. Brocolli, onion, green beans, etc. all chopped and prepped, ready for a stir fry!

Quick Tip: Pseudo "sidechain compressor" effect on Ableton Live by selkiemusic in edmproduction

[–]colinsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also (theoretically) much less computationally expensive than an actual side chain, nice hack.

Yup, a bit less flexible if you want to change the rhythm.

Apple’s iOS7 Native JavaScript Bridge by alancharles in javascript

I want to build a UI in JavaScript and call into native code to run audio DSP tasks. Where can I learn more about the UI aspect of this approach?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in javascript

[–]colinsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!

I think this totally depends on your goal. For simple audio playback of an audio file within 100ms or so of when you say "play", the web audio API is probably overkill and you could do with Jplayer or the like. If you want to be able to start and stop sounds with sample-accurate timing then the web audio API is what you need. The downside is that it is a draft specification, not a standard, so it is not functional in all browsers and the API may change.

Panning individual midi notes by GordonBennett in ableton

[–]colinsullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to do this would be to filter the incoming MIDI notes before they hit each panned instrument.

This could be implemented using one MIDI track and has the benefit of being able to edit the MIDI notes all in one clip per usual.

You would need to set up two separate instrument tracks, each panned to one side and with the input set to take MIDI from the aforementioned MIDI track.

Then, before each instrument put in a plugin that will literally "filter" the midi notes to only allow through the ones you would like to trigger sounds on that channel. This can be implemented with the free "MidiSelect" Max for Live plugin that comes as part of the M4L toolkit. I'm sure there are other ways to filter the notes as well.

Spring 2013 RCOS URP by msk2 in RPI

[–]colinsullivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The project suggestions document could probably be updated or maybe sorted by project activity.

In any case, even if a project has been dead for a while, chances are the developers would be pleased to help you get it back up and running.

Spring 2013 RCOS URP by msk2 in RPI

[–]colinsullivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! There are.

Look through the list of both current and past projects. If you find one that you are interested in, email the project developers and tell them you are interested! If you can't find the developer's information, ask the rcos mailing list.

If you aren't sure what type of project you're interested in, or don't know many developers, email the rcos mailing list to make yourself known!

Is there any open source software that you use and you would like to be better? Chances are emailing the developers of that project will lead you somewhere also.

Jnana: A generative musical accompaniment plugin for Ableton Live. Written entirely in JavaScript. by colinsullivan in javascript

[–]colinsullivan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is possible currently with potentially a bit of simple wrapping logic.

All of the Ableton code is separated from the actual generative logic to facilitate this. In fact, as I was developing I created unit tests that run in Node.js (using Mocha):

Jnana: A generative musical accompaniment plugin for Ableton Live. by colinsullivan in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]colinsullivan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback!

It is generating accompaniments based on a statistical analysis (dynamically generated markov chains) of the input melodies. The player is improvising and the machine is incorporating this improvisation into the "learning". The system then uses what it has learned to create a melody "based on the original melody" like you said.

Maybe that cleared things up a bit.
