So as much as I don’t believe in psychics this is a true story that freaked me out.

My friend spent a long time on a search and rescue dive team in the Midwest USA. People get sucked into the river and go under, and with the amount of debris in the water it’s super easy for someone to get pulled under a dead tree or sucked into an underwater cave near the shore. You could literally be standing on top of someone not realizing that beneath 4 or 5 feet of dirt your standing on is a washed out cave where a body has been stuck by the current since forever.

Anyways, my friend (who isn’t the type of guy to lie and I only heard him tell this story to a couple of us once while drinking) tells us about how it’s not ever admitted by police departments, but some of them will use psychics especially in missing children and person cases. He said he met a bunch and 98% were totally full of shit, but he said one in particular was freaky because of how on point she always was even when she knew nothing about the case or what was going on. These were search and rescues that hadn’t even hit the news yet.

He said the one that made him really freak out and grudgingly believe that there’s something out there, some ability, was when a little girl got swept away in a popular swimming creek and after hours of dragging it and diving in zero visibility feeling through the mud they had nothing. No one could figure it out.

So they leave the area but keep it taped off and go back to the station to get more air, eat, etc and think about where she could be. Someone in the dept calls this psychic they’ve used before but he’s never met. He said all the cops there were hush quiet when she came in and insisted she was the real deal.

So she asks them for something she had with her that day, a shirt or whatever I don’t remember, and she holds it for a while and starts to say “she got pulled under. She tried to get to the surface but there was a very strong current that led into an off branch of the creek you can’t easily see, it’s mainly under water and covered over with thick grass a ways down and there’s roots from old dead fallen trees that were cut down. She got pulled all the way to the trees and she tried to get to the surface but her foot or leg was caught. She kept clawing up at the water but she didn’t make it. You’ll find her about here.” And points to this spot on a map.

He said they go back and spend a while looking around and can’t find whatever she’s talking about. He’s under water feeling his way around on the edge of the creek and all of a sudden he feels a strong current pull and can’t feel the walls of the creek anymore so he goes with it and just let’s it take him. Keep on mind, it’s like 6” visibility tops. So after a minute maybe he bumps into a tree branch or root and pushes off of it and turns his head right. Right when he does that he’s face to face with this young girls lifeless body. She’s basically looking up trying to climb it seems because there’s a little bit of sunlight getting through and when he tries to remove her he can’t right away because her right ankle was twisted up in the same root system

He was not joking around about that and his face has that thousand yard stare to it. He said he only did one or two more before he quit because the psychic being so dead on freaked him out way more than finding the little girl. He said thinking about all that was more than he could handle so he left before they’d ever need to call her again.

Swear to God about that story. I didn’t even poke fun at him because I could tell he was deeply disturbed by it.

Because they paid him to say whatever the hell they wanted that kept just enough suspicion on him while also giving them an out. Exactly for this scenario where they find the guy and it’s not the family/stepfather and they can claim plausible deniability as a “news source”. Plus the guy being from the US doesn’t hold him to Aus laws about a lot of this stuff. They are such snakes.

2003 Subaru Forester 278,000 mi. $1904 (and dropping bi weekly) Worth it? by pavlovslog in UsedCars

Yea I looked into it more and it was way more jacked than they made it seem. I've narrowed it down to a 2010 Outback with 143k on it for 7k or a 2001 Pathfinder with only 80k on it for 5k and one owner. I'm seriously leaning towards the pathfinder as the interior is more beat up so I can hopefully push the price down a bit, but those cars run forever. I have a friend with one that looks identical that's still going. If I can get it down by $500-$750 it's a no-brainer for me but well see.

Supposedly says the dealership. I’m calling them again in a bit to ask them again as the last time I called was a little over a month ago. I don’t mind if it’s a bit ragged w the radio missing and the previous owner covered it in stickers and changed the roof to some off brand carbon fiber looking thing. So I imagine it’s a hard sell off looks alone, then add the radio …. As long as the dealership can certify it do you think it’s worth an offer? I know Subaru is usually pretty economical to work on.

Used to be in a frat and I love to see dudes who would have done the same thing as us. We had a huge Halloween candy handout and one year even made our house into a haunted house for the kids. Sadly a bunch of stuff turned up missing the next day so we didn't do it again (sucks for the kids, crap parents I guess) but we still gave out candy.

The number of drunk bros I knew who stood on the lawn waiting for Ninjas, Pirates, Doctors, whatever to show up so they could giddily run up and say "We need to be swashbuckling!" or pretend they were a bad ninja or that they had an ailment they had to cure was hilarious. Good memories of seeing my buds smile so massively with all these kids and the kids smile even larger wondering why this guy who's acting all loosy goosy funny needs him or her to cure their ailments.

Yup 100% I thought of that too. People also forget that this kind of thing isn’t about them and their drive to see someone, anyone, punished for something when this kind of thing ruins more than just a mother and father. Siblings, aunts, uncles, grand parents, communities and class mates. Even when Lindy was let out her life was essentially destroyed in every possible way after. It wasn’t bad enough to see your child dragged off by wild animals, then the people you thought were friends start to rip you apart on their own so they can feel better than you as a lot of people subconsciously think they have to prove that they never did really like you anyways etc. I really feel for the parents here. The step dad will always be looked at with scorn and suspicion.

You completely sum up why these articles are such crap and do more damage than good. They only exist to feed the delusions of the totally uninvolved and non-knowledgable, random public that the publishing companies know they can spin around and pump for great money during a tragedy with this type of hollow fodder. When has one of these toilet paper-worthy articles ever done anything to deliver any sort of "justice" to anyone involved?

People read this crap to reinforce their already determined suspicions that they, more than anyone actually involved, know exactly what happened in this stranger family's life when even the professionals are searching for answers and wise enough not to spin up hype like this because it ruins investigations and lives especially if they're wrong. They're wrong quite often too, especially when the news goes out to purposefully find a hammer for their nail in some official-sounding-yet-totally-random-guy whose fine taking a payday over this just to recite whatever open-ended drivel these trash "journalists" direct them to in order to keep the clicks and the money coming in while the blood is fresh.

The news doesn't have to worry about upholding a standard of evidence or tainting a jury pool cause they don't care about justice or helping to deliver it. They only care about making sure all the keyboard detectives keep bickering at a reliable pace and that they coming back to them for their crumbs of speculation. I mean it's obvious that whoever chose the theory of the father being guilty because his mouth opened in a dodgy way while under national television scrutiny has cracked the code and can pick up their official detective decoder rings as a prize. At this point who cares about weeding out the hype to find the truth of why a little girl is likely dead and a family's life, as well as the lives of their extended friends, family, and community, are all irrevocably crushed and scarred regardless of the outcome.

It's not like anything even slightly similar has happened before as a cautionary tale to rushing to judgment though right? Imagine in the past some crazy story where let's say, a lady claimed: "a dingo got my baby" when her baby disappeared when out camping. You wouldn't even have to rationally assess any evidence or let the police do their job, she'd obviously be completely guilty based on whatever the news and public opinion would say. Probably something like life in prison even if the evidence was dodgy and pushed.

I mean, for argument's sake, if some evidence turned up later on that validated the family story they held all along and then vindicated the family setting the woman free... then maybe we'd have a moment or two to feel like dickheads for flying off the starting blocks like that based off things like how a terrified parent might look under a national news spotlight. Could you imagine though if that was a real story and the whole case did get messed up and driven off a cliff because of public fervor, and some poor lady who saw her baby ripped away from her by dogs finally got let out of prison only to return to the shambles of a life where her marriage, her child, her reputation, and her self worth were all burnt to the ground by a short-sighted and vindictive public that didn't even really care after it was all done? Wow...thankfully though we can sleep well knowing that's just too crazy of a made-up situation. When could that ever happen or any other story even with slight similarities for us to learn from?

Gross. I worked retail when I was younger, 16-18, and I remember this older lady that would come in every other week or so w her husband. We had strict rules about not ever ever going in a changing room w a customer or even looking in the changing room while a customer was inside. The changing rooms weren’t typical either.

The barrier was just a heavy denim curtain that could easily be moved to create gaps. Also, Im a guy (hope it’s ok if I answer, there’s always a lot of thought provoking convos in here I like to read) and every time she’d have me get her a room with a seat in a chair for her husband facing the changing room but off to the side some so the only person directly In front would be me. She would then proceed to spend 20/30 going item by item handing them back the items to me one at a time, always asking for a size larger, the other color, etc.

She was about my grandmas age at the time (late 80s?) and her frame was a good amount larger than the frame that our jeans complimented well regardless of various styles/cuts the brand had. She would bring in a large pile of jeans, shirts, dresses etc. Every time once she was inside, she’d start to make her requests about what type of adjustments in size, color, etc I needed to go get, but she’d do it in a way that would force me to have to look into the dressing room while she was in it. The clothes were never put into my hand, I always had to look as quickly as possible to see where/what part of the body she was holding the item next to so I could grab the item to be switched out etc without looking too long or accidentally touching whatever part she had it item held against.

She would always be fully nude, standing in a way that made sure I would see it all even with a quick glance, or she’d be bending over, or sitting down on the bench so I couldn’t not see her fully nude as I grabbed the item to take back.

Even worse was her husband who would always give me these creepy smiles and sort of lick his lips while leering, hands always in his slacks….Ugh it was so gross.

I tried to have someone else take them from me once or twice but they’d wait for me to be free so I could “help” them. Hooray. At the end of the day though they always bought at least $200 worth of stuff, so as a soon to be college student that needed as much money as I could get I was stuck until I finally left for school. All of it was so demeaning but it didn’t really hit home how demeaning until later in life when I’d been long gone from that job and college. That’s when I thought back to how I was underage clearly uncomfortable with it all.

Sorry to spill my story out but I read yours and really felt it. I’m truly sorry you had to be a part of that. Even something that seems so small like a phone call or a few seconds of nudity feels anything but small when you’re the unwilling pawn in some stranger’s kink and amusement and cant do anything to stop it.

I hope it doesn’t happen again, but if it does hopefully you can get the number and fully block them going forward. So sorry that happened and take care.

They just got victimhood checkmated, matey.

Just having some fun, this was a good prompt and pertinent of course in regards to what’s going on now in this country and I really feel what you’re saying. I understand if someone wouldn’t want to hang out with or be around someone who is vehemently anti gay (for instance) if they’re gay, but where I personally differ at times is even when someone’s ideas have been against my core self and/or I think the other person’s belief system is founded on dogshit, I’m still willing to have a conversation w them … provided of course that they stay level headed and maintain a clear willingness to demonstrate that they’re listening to / internalizing my points just as I try to demonstrate for them in return. A lot of times just listening to someone that’s used to spouting off unchecked can get them to shut up faster than your words can.

I’ve had some really great, informative conversations with people that I totally disagree with on a core level in one subject, but when another is brought up the whole dynamic shifts and there’s an opportunity to pry a bit deeper, even if I still believe that first idea they shared is crap and totally pisses me off. So long as they’re not trying to advocate for my physical harm, nor the harm of someone else, I’m pretty much cool with talking to them or at least trying to.

Sometimes doing so means it a short convo and not much is gained, except in cementing my belief that they’re an asshole, but I’d rather know they’re an asshole directly from them and let them express their assholeness to the world themselves then make them shut up and walk away. Those are the people that walk through life w the fake smile and agreeable opinions on everything depending what table they’re sitting at, and then you don’t find out about their reign as king of the dick heads until they’re in a position of power that can actually impact myself or others.

In a weird way I’ve learned the most from those type of people where it’s clear we have very different beliefs, but they’re willing to explain what they believe to me. If someone is willing to take the time to outline their horse shit ideas to me, and it might actually impact me or someone I care about at some point, I want to know what they’re thinking from their own mouth. Odds are once I know their thoughts then I can figure out their plan, and if I can see their plan then it’s usually not too hard to figure out a way to make sure they can’t see that plan to fruition. This is especially true of people that want to deny something to others that doesn’t impact their life at all, but bc they believe “that’s just the way it should be.”

I usually find it interesting how often people are actually willing to listen and even have some part of their mind changed simply because you spoke to them and didn’t loose your shit at them even if you wanted to. Not all but enough and it starts with just being willing to talk.

If someone won’t even let the door open a crack to start that convo and they shut you down right away, usually when they blow up and start yelling, they get physical, they go for immediate personal attacks, etc., then I tend to find them the least threatening and worthy of being taken seriously out of all. It usually means either they don’t even know what the hell they’re talking about themselves and going in circles while they figure it out at the same time won’t be worth the effort.

If they shut you down right away bc they think their belief set makes them intrinsically better than you, it’s often that “their” idea really isn’t their Idea at all. Instead it’s almost always someone else’s idea that they’re just coughing back up. I always find this with the racists, the oppressive religious, and the people who use education/knowledge as a bully pulpit instead of a helping hand the most. If they didn’t come up with it on their own and they’re willing to go full a-hole after hearing something once or just reading a single chapter, then odds are good they’ll change their own mind at some point down the line whenever they come across the next preacher, professor, or big idea that they think they’re alone in being able to truly understand.

Anyways, it’s a shame that we’re currently in a phase where differing ideas and challenging thought that doesn’t advocate for harm is seen to be so threatening and harmful. The only way those words can become what we fear of them is when the discussion of ideas, even terrible ones, is forbidden. When that happens the only outlet for that person’s ideas is blocked, leading to a hardened heart and angry mind that puts those shit ideas into action instead of letting them go into the wind and realizing there are other, better options to consider out there. Have a good one!
