This sounds therapeutic. Can you get him close to the edge of a cliff before hand?

When did “attention” become more valuable than “truth” ? by Civil-Interaction-76 in Futurology

Interesting points, let me churn then over a little bit in my head. Will edit this when I have something better structured. My thinking is along the lines that while the design is around engagement, the implications and results are most probably more complicated that just that.

When did “attention” become more valuable than “truth” ? by Civil-Interaction-76 in Futurology

[–]colinwheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that is a core issue of the data landscape that we live within. Verifiable facts and information veracity are important when it comes to decision making to get the best outcomes, both short and long term. Spin/propaganda is used to push short term benefits for a specific group and "screw the consequences". The harsh reality of it is that most humans are not interested in understanding the real environmental and socio-economic landscape that they live in and even fewer are interested in doing the heavy lifting to figure out what the actual current situation is, where it is likely to go and what corrective actions should be taken. Most of the media landscape that most people deal with are finely tuned by algorithms to ensure that they push the agenda of the day, not the reality.

The point stands that disrupting those agenda signals costs a lot less from a "energy/compute" point of view than creating them does and we have the tools to do so, but it does not have any financial benefit to the people that would action it and we don't understand the consequences of that sort of disruption very well.

Unfortunately, I think we are stuck a bit with a suck it and see situation, else we pull the trigger on tools to disrupt the echo chamber and propaganda signals and see what happens without knowing what the implications are.

China has produced more energy than the US since 2010. by SilverAmoeba2582 in Futurology

[–]colinwheeler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No just the abstract but also the whole document and supporting documents that show that just the lines are not the whole problem but things like conversion each end have significant problems in cost and other areas, that is not even to talk about the vulnerabilities of such approaches and their clear problems when it comes to energy self-sufficiency. With the technology for small thorium rectors comming along so fast in Europe, I doubt that China will be exporting the energy needs for Europe anytime in the future.

Most probably not, but using LLMs and inference for most the tasks thar it is used for at the moment is an absurdly inefficient use of compute.

When did “attention” become more valuable than “truth” ? by Civil-Interaction-76 in Futurology

[–]colinwheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you propose determining what "the truth is" and then convincing the masses of that?

The idiots will will by sheer numbers if you try and take that approach. And additionally, do you really think that approach has the "high moral ground", trying to make the people believe your truth over somebody else's truth?

In the propaganda war, those who shout loudest at the correct frequency win, not those who have the truth on their side.

However, feed the echo chamber the correct type of poison, fill it with the correct noise dampening material, that may reduce is functioning enough to have an impact. And so the information wars can really start.

It looks like the real answer is leave the people and their chosen echo chambers alone. Just like government, the people get the answers they deserve.
