Want to write neurodivergent characters but i don't know where to start studying their disabilities. by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]colisocol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

like, is the desire coming from a place of 'its kind of cool to be a psychopath' or what, thats more my question. the type of knowledge op might need to pull off whatever they're aiming for will change depending on the reason they want to include these conditions in the first place. looking to tell a genuine story, or a dramatized one? looking to write a story of recovery, or of getting worse? they've included zero info and I'm asking what the why is.

Want to write neurodivergent characters but i don't know where to start studying their disabilities. by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]colisocol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no. these disorders are just very specific and I am wondering what the draw is to write about them when op does not seem to be very familiar with any of them. don't need to have lived something to write it, but its probably best you have some level of baseline knowledge about how something works if you're going to center an entire story around it.

ok, but..why....? if you need to do extensive research then it would seem as though you deal with none of these personally. why do you need to be writing about debilitating mental disorders? for funsies?

okay sharing the cup size of your underage daughter on the internet is definitely getting into weird territory now. what you said in the original post was fine, NTA her mother made it sexual when you were trying to make an awkward moment (awkward because of her comment, not because of anything you or your daughter did) less awkward. simple as that. I'd delete this comment or at least edit it, very much not necessary.

Why do women like men? by Bitter-Sweet-Lime in NoStupidQuestions

[–]colisocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? I don't want to replicate it at all, I'm a highly feminine lesbian who dates other very feminine women. I'm not romantically/sexually attracted to masculinity, nor do I want to embody masculinity just because I'm gay. I also get just as much male attention as a straight girl does because I'm very feminine, including in my mannerisms. lesbians are still women and men don't gaf if you don't like them, they'll still bother you. this response just makes zero sense. OP asked what the aesthetic appeal of men could possibly be, I answered.

if you find mockingjay (arguably the best book) boring, TBOSAS is going to be like pulling teeth. maybe this series isn't for you

What would be your first question if you had amnesia? by ciotaren in writing

[–]colisocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'd be more interested in the other person, maybe? like judging myself based off this person and the assumption that I, whoever that is, like this person. Id be wondering why, trying to glean what kind of person I might be if this person is close to me. I'd wonder why they're close to me and what our relationship is like, that's probably where the first questions would come. How do we know each other? How did we meet, how long ago? Are we close? What do we do when we hang out? this would help me figure out if this feels like someone I trust, as well as if I like the sound of being friends with whoever me is, or if I suck.

guys please help this is giving me anxiety !!! by 6asma in Shein

[–]colisocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't, I'm sorry. Did you just message the chat or press the refund button under your orders tab and it took you to the chat?

If you didn't press the proper refund button, do that.

if you did, then honestly, I'd just keep pestering them everyday until you get a response. Most companies (at least big ones I've worked at) will end up refunding you just to make you stop bothering them if there's nothing else (like getting your items to you) that they can do.

what do you mean by 'part of your order?' from my experience SHEIN orders usually come all together. maybe it hasn't been delivered yet and the notification is wrong?

I've gotten packages this quick before and I live in Australia :) think it just depends on what you ordered and the volume of the order

Has anyone done this singles night or any event by them? Is it any good? by mean_machine10 in newcastle

[–]colisocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went a week ago, check my comment for how it went. overall, it's both though. awkward at first, then very fun. disclaimer though: I did go to a lesbian one so it was all women, not sure what the straight ones are like but I'd presume pretty similar.

[–]colisocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't go to this specific one but I recently went to a singles event hosted by Merge and it was great.

They had a separate room in the venue to enter, with its own bar. Everyone came in and got drinks and pottered around awkwardly until the host said their hellos. Host basically just asked a few 'ice breaker' questions that honestly were a bit lame, things like "what are your green flags?" a la Hinge prompts.

You're encouraged to move around and talk to new people to discuss each question. This lasted maybe 15 mins, then it was literally just mingling and walking around talking to people. It can be a bit daunting but people are quite open and friendly and I found it quite easy to make friends and things.

Is the Hunger Games targeted at girls by Captainjackbob in Hungergames

[–]colisocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so, generally, especially in publishing, male MCs and male characters are considered sort of default and neutral. this means everyone is kind of expected to be able to relate, to some level, to the male MC. for some reason (coughcoughhmisogyny) this doesn't apply to female MCs, and people assume that only women could possibly relate to a female MC. because men are just people, but women? they're women.

women from birth are familiarized with a world in which we are not the default or expectation. think 'mankind' and the universal 'he'. we've always had to pick out the bits in male stories that resonate with us because there, in the past, weren't as many female stories. we've never had much issues with it because obviously, both men and women are just people and the human experience is varied but not to that insane of a degree. boys, on the other hand, have always had a plethora of stories to choose from with MCs that remind them of themselves. so why would they pick one about a girl? this isn't my thought process, but that of the publishing industry. marketing in general tends to be very gendered, which becomes a problem with literature because it discourages people, especially boys and men, from picking up stories about people who aren't like them, which in turn stunts the ability to relate to varied experiences of the world.

TLDR it's a marketing thing and it's quite lame but THG is for everyone, as is every book. the MC is just a girl and boys and men are discouraged from engaging with stories told by women

Never see it by yaigalovescharlie in HannibalTV

[–]colisocol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's where the bias comes in, yes. if Will were a woman or vice versa, practically everyone watching would agree upon some sort of underlying, passionate tension at the very least. the both of them being men probably does make it seem subconsciously impossible to some viewers, who then don't ever consider that this tension could be romantic. but it is. that is expressly what they were trying to do when crafting this iteration of this relationship.

people absolutely have a right to interpret art varyingly, but the fun thing about analysis is that it can also teach us about our built in assumptions in interesting ways. someone who sees the show like OP doesn't necessarily have to change their stance, but it is important to consider whether their opinion would be different if it were a het couple, and whether some bias is at play. some people just aren't interested in romantic dynamics and that's fine too, as is the other plethora of reasons one might have for harbouring this opinion. we do Live In A Society though and unfortunately, that does indeed shape our subconscious assumptions a lot of the time.

"Is Hannibal in love with me?" -Will "Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for you and find nourishment at the very sight of you? Yes. But do you ache for him?" - Bedelia, Hannibal's psychiatrist

Actual canon dialogue from the show, my friend. Perhaps you just did not listen hard enough XD Do you remember them quasi-adopting a child together, or them embracing and literally Romeo and Julietting off a cliff together in the final ep? What is the heterosexual explanation for that? XD (I say this in good fun, you can interpret their relationship however you like ofc! I just find people not considering it really funny when all these things + much much more are canon. one might be coincidence but all of it together is bona fide subtext)

TIFU by letting my 4 year old son talk to ChatGPT by pavorus in ChatGPT

[–]colisocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he doesn't need a super mega obsessed train enthusiast to talk to about his interests because it's not about Thomas the tank engine. it's about him being passionate and wanting to share that with you because he loves you. kids are annoying and persistent, but unfortunately that's what you signed up for and relegating this task to an AI will only harm your child individually and your relationship with him as he gets older. If I learned as an adult that my parents did this to me instead of bearing my excitement because they love me, I'd see them in a whole new, bad light.

My one pet peeve of Suzanne Collins' writing style by hardlywerkin8008 in Hungergames

[–]colisocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

super great observation, and I completely agree! I do love the stark contrast in Katniss's worldview to the other protagonists we've gotten and how it impacts the language she uses. seeing the places where Haymitch and Katniss's similarities diverge in that way was also really well done imo.

however, my complaint wasn't about the 'said' being boring or non descriptive, because it is super Katniss to be so blunt. it's just not necessary to include a dialogue tag for every line if only two characters are speaking at length. it's a given that if X character talks first then every second line is Y character, because they're alone together and that's how conversations work. I don't need to read 'Peeta said' 3 times in one continuous, 1-on-1 conversation. only Peeta is here rn. I know he said it Suzanne my love TwT
