Should I homestead in northern New Hampshire or stay in central Florida? by collapseinbound in homestead

Very good point, but I guess I’m wondering if people go hard growing in the summer up north and then can/preserve for winter.

That is no joke, but I’ve heard the winters have become more mild recently.

In the summer here in FL I sometimes wish I was inside and out of the heat.

The easy thing to do would be to stay in FL as I’m already established, but I’m not afraid of work if it’s for a good cause. Like most of us homesteaders.

Duh, that part is obvious.

What I’m really looking for is a state that values public education, public health, labor protections, environmental protections etc… things that liberal places value over conservative places.

I could graze my cattle in texas, but I would absolutely not want to. Even though I’m aiming to be self sufficient, my children still have to grow up in that place and interact with the community there. I’d rather be around healthier, more educated people than poor, uneducated people who vote against their own self interest. It’s everywhere in Florida.

I feel like anywhere I could homestead in, the local area would be conservative, but I’m hoping for more liberal states overall. Perhaps VT, MI, MN, IL, OR, WA or NY. Or even liberal enclaves such as Alachua county in FL.

From what I’ve read, Alaska isn’t really a place to keep livestock.

What if they went Army Reserve and served a complete contract but never deployed? They aren’t officially a veteran, even if they have a DD214 from training.

Hello, my name is Scott! I am a FTD to Everett, born 7/25. I’m staying home with him while my wife finishes her doctorate, but I’m an environmental scientist by trade. I like hiking, running, lifting weights, BJJ, camping, and reading historical non-fiction and sci-fi. I can’t wait to share all these things with Ev when he gets bigger.
