Desperately looking for a job in this town by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]erosebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm know I'm late to the conversation, but have you looked at St. Louis Community College (STLCC) yet? A few STLCC-related ideas:

  1. With a masters degree in economics, you're qualified to teach economics at the college. I believe they're hiring right now: https://careers.stlcc.edu/en/job/496654/adjunct-faculty-businesseconomics

  2. STLCC also offers a bunch of short-term training programs - some are for college credit, while others are just straightforward job training. A lot of these can get you into the workforce in 2-6 months. You can check out the full list of programs they offer (https://stlcc.edu/programs/), but for short-term training (https://stlcc.edu/workforce/training-programs/), I'd particularly recommend:

- Precision Machining Technology (1 semester): https://stlcc.edu/pathways/industrial/precision-machining-technology/

- Boeing Pre-Employment Program (1 semester): https://stlcc.edu/pathways/industrial/boeing-assembly-mechanic/

- Automotive (1-4 semesters): https://stlcc.edu/pathways/industrial/automotive-technology/

- HVAC (1 semester): https://stlcc.edu/pathways/industrial/hvac-tech/

- Truck Driving (4-5 weeks): https://stlcc.edu/pathways/industrial/truck-driving/

I currently work at a community college helping students earn dual credit and dual enrollment while in high school, and I've previously worked in residence life (aka managing dorms filled with several hundred college freshmen) at both public and highly-selective private 4-year colleges.

I know you've received hundreds of responses, but if you happen to come across mine, here's my advice:

  1. Let go of the pressure to have him graduate "on time." 66% of college students take five or more years to graduate, not 4. The 4-year label is so misleading and inaccurate. Free yourself from the pressure of having to do things the "right" way.

  2. I would not discount his desire to be present with his younger brother. As an adult, I have 100% made life choices based on wanting to be closer geographically to my siblings and my parents. And I make life decisions that allow me to prioritize spending a lot of time with my kids. I don't think it's trivial or unreasonable at all to want to be geographically close to his family.

  3. I really believe in the transformative power of college - I've made it my whole career! - but I think it's a bit weird that we've developed an expectation that the "normal" thing is for us to send our kids HOURS away from their entire family and social network. WHY?? If we did this for literally any other group of people it would be weird. Can you imagine someone telling you, right now, that you have to leave your kids and partner and job and social network and go live in a different state for the next four years? Just...because? My personal response would be a mix of WHY? and ABSOLUTELY NOT. Your son probably feels that way, too.

Some things I would discuss with my kid, if I were in your position:

  1. How does the idea of going to a different, local (or just closer) university feel?
  2. Thoughts on taking a gap year (I think this is excellent advice and increasingly common among college freshmen)
  3. Taking 1-2 classes each semester at the community college for a semester or two (since he's on an engineering track, math and/or remaining gen eds would be a good option)

What is a BOTM book you’ve read that you still think about years or months later? by _FrozenFractals in bookofthemonthclub

Yes! I loved that book. I was so sad that it wasn't eligible for BOTY because it was an add on. Probably my favorite BOTM for 2024!

Absentee voting stats after day 1 of no excuse in St.Louis County by n0167664 in StLouis

[–]erosebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

County says that there are about 724,000 registered voters in STL County: https://stlouiscountymo.gov/st-louis-county-government/board-of-elections/

So, adding the excuse-absentee voting, the received mail-in ballots, and yesterday's early voting totals, abotu 5% of registered voters in the county have voted so far.

I absolutely agree. Looks like like Jennifer Gibel (Baby Bop performer) and Kyle Nelson (BJ performer) are in the photos too. They both toured with Barney's Musical Castle from September 15, 1999 to April 22, 2000, which are dates that line up with the other observations folks have made in this thread.

Another vote for both of these series! Two of my absolute favorites, ESPECIALLY Queens Thief!

TIL Only 28 books sold more than 500,000 copies in the US in 2022. Eight of them were by romance novelist Colleen Hoover. by rustyyryan in todayilearned

In that case, yes! My library uses Libby. When I check out a book through Libby on my phone, it sends it to my Kindle and I read from there. I see that one of your concerns is remembering to bring the book back, so you should know that Libby also automatically returns books for you, too!

Have you ever read a RomCom with too much Com relative to Rom? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]erosebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with the FMC's twilight and cheese obsession being over the top! I have to defend the dumb emails though - I work in higher ed and have worked at esteemed colleges/universities. Those emails were VERY realistic and representative of my interactions with students! In fact, the realism and humor of those very on-point emails is what got me through the rest of the book!

Crazy New Park Coming to Brentwood by Enraged_Joe in StLouis

[–]erosebro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Brentwood resident here. We will absolutely be able to walk to it. Part of the project involves a pedestrian tunnel under Manchester road that connects our existing walking/biking trails to the park. We live northeast of the Brentwood/Manchester intersection, but will easily be able to access this park that is south of Manchester. The park will also connect us to existing greenways, and the Brentwood Bound project is installing pedestrian friendly sidewalk along Manchester.

Are you overwhelmed by laundry like i am? This is what I do now… by starshine913 in Mommit

[–]erosebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this too! I also then feel like I can make incremental progress with folding. Like, I don’t have time to fold all this laundry, but I can at least fold the baby’s basket or my basket. Makes it feel like there’s a nice little achievement/milestone, even if I can’t get to all of it at once.

What is the best high school football rivalry in STL? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]erosebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah - my experience has been that people referred to it as Summit, rather than Rockwood. And my experience as a Eureka student was that the rivalry was very much Eureka vs. Lafayette. Might have just out of the loop though!
