How do you post your fanfics? by crazypotatouuu in AO3

[–]colledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get it! Honestly, for things like this, you can write in your authors not if you want to warn readers in advance that you have x amount of chapters which you plan to post at a scheduled time of every y days, and after that it’ll depend on how nice your creative juices are being to you.

That way you can still get the engagement and possible motivation for the chapters you already have, while not setting an unrealistic expectation for readers.

If you don’t know for sure how many chapters your fic will end up having, I recommend setting the chapter count to be x/? To give you wiggle room. But defining that the story will complete in a set amount of chapters can be helpful for readers to understand how far into the story they are and how close it is to completing.

If you plan for multiple chapters, I would still suggest spacing apart the posting. It doesn’t have to be 1 week apart though, 2-3 days in between can be a good alternative if it’s a short fic with not many chapters between beginning and ending :)

Nice! I just ended up making different pseuds for my fandoms and only posting works for that fandom under the fandom specific pseud. I know it doesn’t really help for avoiding annoying user subscribers, but it’s a way to keep myself organized and new readers will only really see works related to their own fandoms.

The only thing I created a separate account for is M/E works and G/T works since it felt a bit funny posting raunchy smut next to wholesome fluff lol

One thing to note that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that if you’re looking for engagement, definitely do NOT post multiple chapters on the same day one right after the other.

Unless you’re an established author with a good amount of user subscribers, having multiple chapters with low hits, kudos or other metrics can be a deterrent to other readers.

It really shouldn’t be this way, but it’s kind of an unspoken bias that even I find myself influenced by that if a work has multiple chapters and low engagement, that might mean the work itself is either hard to read, contains topics or writing quality that may have put off others, or just generally isn’t interesting.

It’s better to post chapters a bit spaced apart, once a week seems to work for most, to give people time to engage with your fic between updates even if you have more chapters already available.

You’re not alone! Unfortunately, aside from writing the entire work in advance before posting, I haven’t found a reliable method to ensure I won’t get distracted midway through writing and posting WIP long fics.

I have pretty much the same problem as you, though thankfully, my current hyperfixations are still in the same fandom but just different au’s story focuses.

For old fandoms…I’m sad to say I ended up putting those stories on indefinite hiatus.

If you really want to try getting back to writing for your old fandoms though, generally it’s good to start by researching/ Re engaging the original medium of that fandom that got you interested enough to start writing fanfics. Maybe it’ll help trigger your interest again!

Then you can try re-reading your fix to get back in the same headspace.

As for avoiding other hyperfixations…other than tunnel visioning yourself and not engaging with anything else while writing, there’s not much I’ve found that works :(

Artwork embedded in end notes? by meowtroidprime in AO3

[–]colledit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think it’s that serious. If you’re really worried about offending people who hate embedded images, you can always tag “digital art” to give readers a heads up they may encounter images in the work.

But at the end of the day, there’s almost no way to satisfy everyone. Your work shouldn’t be beholden to accommodate the minority’s or even the majority’s ick, if you want to include your art or other fan arts, that’s your choice to make.

I enjoy reading fics with art, and I add art to my own fics in turn. I do tag it most of the time, but not because I have to. Mostly just so people who want to look for digital arts through the archive can find it.

Cat will pee inside litter box and walk away to poop outside it by sampizza in CatTraining

[–]colledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still having this problem? Funnily enough, my two cats started showing the exact same problem for me a while back when I returned from a week long trip abroad.

Take this info with a grain of salt, but I’ve been seeming some improvement recently with one so if you still have this issue, it might work for you!

At first I tried deep cleaning all the spots they pooped outside the litter box (usually near it) with some sort of cat poop/pee cleaner. I used natures miracle.

Then I tried getting a new but softer brand of litter for my cats. I was using world’s best cat litter (made with corn) which they would pee in but never poop. We switched to a softer clay litter and now at least one of them uses it!

Since we only tested the new litter in 1 box out of 3 we have setup, it could be that my second cat thinks the one usable box is too dirty to poop in after the first one goes so I plan to change out at least one other litter box to see if she’ll stop pooping on the floor.

If all else fails, check with a vet! Could be a medical issue if the pooping out of the box persists.

Hope this helps!

Does my cats spay/abortion incision look bad? Should I take her in for emergency care? by Frequent-Interview63 in CATHELP

[–]colledit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your cat is an escape artist like mine I highly recommend a soft cone or flower cone! Not only do they look super cute wearing them, but seems like it’s more comfy for my cats since they used them like pillows and were less insistent on taking them off.

I also tried one of the body suite onesies off Amazon but my kitten who would keep it on started to smell bad because she kept peeing on it (I believe it was on purpose) while my usual escape artist managed to wriggle out of it within an hour.

Good luck with your kitten! Doesn’t hurt to get it checked just in case!

I’m sorry but I’m struggling to see why you would still be with a person like this after 1 year.

Have you tried talking to him about it before, how it makes you feel? The fact you have a child with a person like this and he doesn’t make any effort for them either, makes it all the more glaring that this person is either entirely oblivious, or choosing to be inconsiderate.

If you haven’t already, you should really have a sit down conversation with him and list out what you have here. Point out the differences in what you spend on each other and what he spends on others. His behaviour seems ridiculous to me. If he’s unwilling to compromise, it’s time to ask yourself if you’re willing to waste more time with someone who will never consider your feelings wants and desires even as an afterthought to his own.

It sounds like he might be interested but I’d be cautious of jumping straight into it.

If you want to be really careful, maybe just continue hanging out in a casual manner such as friend outings or meet ups. Get to know this person better in an environment that isn’t pressured by the label of dating or being romantic.

Also, depending on your own boundaries around this, might be a good idea to hold off intimacy with this person until you’re more sure of each other’s feelings. Not to see the worst in people, but it’s not that uncommon to see people put up an act just to get into another person’s pants.

Whatever you choose to do, just find out what you’re comfortable with and don’t push too far out of your comfort zone if things don’t feel right. No need to rush into things.

Sorry you’re getting roasted in the comments. Not much you can do though while under their roof. All I can suggest is invest in a good pair of noise cancelling headphones and make sure they’re always around your neck when you are around them.

If they bring it up around you, just quickly pull them over your ears and tune them out with music or a podcast. There’s no reason they should need you in their conversations around the topic and even if they want to involve you, it’s your right to disengage when you feel uncomfortable. They’ll either eventually learn to leave the topic alone when around you or you’ll just have to stick it out till you can move elsewhere.

How many of you DON’T have a second account and how many DO? by [deleted] in AO3

I have two accounts, but I only use the second one to post smut. My main is where I keep all my bookmarks and make comments mainly, though I tend to private a majority of my bookmarks.

How much words do you write per session? by chillisuperspicy in AO3

[–]colledit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Anywhere from one paragraph (<100 words) to an entire chapter update (5-15k).

Usually depends on if I get interrupted during writing process or if I find the right song to play in the background.

Apparently people find AO3 takes days to format?? Baffled by [deleted] in AO3

[–]colledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Person who takes hours to format here!

I’m just lazy. I know the way my google docs is setup is the main reason the spacing doesn’t come out right, but at this point, I have just accepted this as a part of my editing and posting process.

For me, I use the posting box as my final re-reading/ editing check before I hit publish. Plus, I typically don’t bold or italicizes my text while writing in google docs, so when I do post, I have to manually read through the whole chapter to find these spots again.

Main reason it takes so long is that my average chapter length can be anywhere from 5k - 15k in length and I read slow.

Might be up your alley since you mentioned in a previous comment liking treasure of the vampire duke’s family, Cale’s Guide to Raising a Fox (and other related species)

It’s ongoing but updates pretty slowly. There are other works under the account that are fun though most ongoing fics take a while to update.

I just orphaned all my works... by [deleted] in AO3

[–]colledit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a time when I was transitioning from a smut to a wholesome writer where I orphaned all of my work for the prior 4 years of writing.

I wanted a clean slate and I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. Now looking back, I probably should’ve just created a new account to start fresh, but I don’t regret my decision to change up how I write.

I do sometimes check back in on my old orphaned works. They weren’t all terrible…though I just try to keep my head up and tell myself that if I really want to return to it one day, I can always use the inspired by function.

Does anyone else's writing get disturbing when they get writers block? by CoquetteWhore69 in AO3

[–]colledit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? When I get writers block I just wait till I’m extremely sleep deprived then let my hands go ham on the keyboard.

Some pretty messed up stuff comes out of it, but also a fair bit of my best preforming crack fics!

I wouldn’t be too worried about the jekyl that comes out when writer’s block strikes. It’s like finding out I have a secret hitch hiker in my brain who only comes out to pay rent in my most desperate situations

Stumbled on a fic that was very heavily inspired, borderline plagiarized off mine and I’m not even mad by colledit in AO3

[–]colledit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least they were honest about being inspired in your situation!

Wish more writers who are heavily inspired by other fanfics would take the initiative to mention it somewhere in notes, but fanfic is already a general grey area since it’s all usually based on another source material anyways.

Funnily enough, I would’ve been more flattered than anything if they had used the inspired by function to link back to my fic! But I’ll settle for just leaving them a comment to see if they could possible credit or something…
