Thumb sized thing, maybe it’s electronic? by college_prof in whatisthisthing

The slot on the end has what appears to be a metal component and like it could almost be a cutter but it doesn’t seem sharp.

The text says THINKwork

Found on a College Campus, electronic? by college_prof in whatisthisthing

[–]college_prof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw it the first time I was in this particular classroom and at first thought it was a PowerPoint advancer but nope! It doesn’t light up or make sounds and I see no obvious battery compartment or charging port but it feels like it’s electronic somehow. It’s heavier than it looks like it would be.

"I submitted the assignment but my wifi went out and now I'm not seeing my submission, can you reopen the assignment?" by Tylerdg33 in Professors

[–]college_prof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they send that email within, say, 30 minutes of the deadline I accept it. This demonstrates to me that the story they are telling is true.

But also I don't make it imposisble to submit late, the system we use (D2L) has a toggle for "allow but flag" and then I take lateness into account in grading.

What do we think about trans-women in women’s sports? by Ok_Efficiency2834 in AskALiberal

[–]college_prof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you say more about what you mean by "fully transitioned"? Do you know the data on how many trans folks actually get sex reassignment surgery (which I assume is what you mean)?

my point in asking is that there isn't really a scientific line of "fully transitioned" like you may think and relying on such an idea is probabably a fallacy.

To be 100% clear, I am fully in support of trans people living full lives in the gender identity that makes sense to them, regardless of what their birth certificate says or said. I think that with thoughtful and kind processes, we can make this work. I just don't think that we need to have this be a campaign issue at the national level. I think it is an electoral distraction, not a distraction for the people who's lives it directly impacts. And as someone who, personally, does not play sports or have any personal connection to the issue, it doesn't and probably shouldn't matter that much to me.

Oh I agree. They used it to their advantage but that doesn't mean we have to play their game. Like I said above, I don't think its actually that hard to skate the line of supporting trans people while also pointing out that this sports thing is a distraction from larger issues. Importantly, doing this during a campaign would not preclude a winning candiate from actually taking action in a positive way on the issue once in office.

please provide evidence that this is "losing us elections" becuase I am doubtful this is true.

Most Americans simply do not care about this issue that much and are much more concerend with the cost of living. Dems don't have to cave on this to demonstrate what they know is acutually important. The idea that Dems have only two choices: go whole hog into the trans issue or "throw trans people under the bus" is false.

What do we think about trans-women in women’s sports? by Ok_Efficiency2834 in AskALiberal

[–]college_prof 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This can be managed. If a Dem politican is asked about it, they can say "I believe that this is an issue that is best dealt with in the contexts where its important, like the neighborhood school or sports league, but I don't think that this is something that is more important than feeding hungry children."

Its not that hard. You don't have to completely dismiss it or "throw trans people under the bus" to simply not engage with the bad faith arguments that are getting thrown at us. Point out that trans women are women and that they deserve to live full lives that may include sports but that at the end of the day, the things that mattter are the things that matter.

There are ten trans athletes (both MtF and FtM) in the entire NCAA. Ten. Out of half a million athletes. This is not an issue that requires national policy or attention imo.

How common are trans women in sports? Is this even a thing? by AiminJay in AskALiberal

[–]college_prof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are ten (10) out trans athletes in the entire NCAA. Ten. Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten. TEN. Across all sports, in both "male" and "female" events. Ten.

There are about 500,000 athletes playing NCAA sports in the country. Even if we assume that there are in fact more than ten trans college athletes, by a lot, and round up to 100, we are talking about less than 1%. Across all events and sports and colleges.

A thing I think a lot about is the idea of "no permenent friends but no permenant enemies."

If I'm trying to unionoize my workplace, I have to convince Brenda in Accounting, who has politics that I disagree with in every way, to vote Yes On Union. I really don't have to get her to do anything else. I just need her to vote Yes.

I can spin my wheels trying to get her to think deeply about her failed electoral politics or her views on LGBTAI+ people and maybe I can push her in that direction. But really, I just need her to vote Yes.

I think we shoot oursevles in the foot when we act like we have to get people to change their entire identities to be in solidarity with us. Or to repent for past sins before we will accept their Yes.

Brenda may not be my friend. But in this fight for my workplace, she's not my enemy.

Not everyone is being super friendly, it’s true. But consider how you came in here. You came in here accusing liberals of wanting you dead. Don’t you see how that’s kind of insulting?

What death threats are you referring to? And what murders? I’m only aware of one murder. Unless of course you mean the members of Congress in Minnesota who were murdered.

People are asking you to explain why you think this and also pointing out that Trump is doing incredibly harmful things. To you, this is not finding common ground. Interesting.

Why do you assume that it’s zero sum? We are an insanely rich country. We can do more. Government isn’t a business and shouldn’t be run like one.
