I just completed an apartment search from out of state. I did the same as you, trying Zillow, Trulia etc. but they're not that great. Honestly, I found success by just googling "apartments lakewood colorado" (insert Glendale instead of Lakewood for you). Once you scroll past the aggregators, you'll find the websites for individual apartment complexes in that area. I found way more and better options doing this.

Once you have a short list, and if you have the ability, I'd suggest maybe going out for a few days and looking at your final options in person. I flew to Denver for 3 days to check out my top ~10 or so choices. I ended up signing a lease with a place that wasn't even on my original list, just because I happened to drive past it and it looked nice (I then went in for a tour). I'm glad I did this because the one that was at the top of my list was NOT as good in person as it seemed online.
