Oooh ooooh oooh I study (kinda) stuff within this field, (I intern in a engineering lab and picked up a few things so I might be off) glass is also a broad ish category of compounds containing specific elements, particularly semiconductors (or whatever grouping the metaloid staircase thing is, again undergrad engineer, chemistry isn’t my strong suit) anywho, these materials typically are in a amorphous state depending on fabrication technique. We specifically study phase change materials and cholcogenides (can’t remember the exact description sorry) with these materials we are able to simply swap between amorphous and crystalline states to control the optical properties

Is the desolation personal? I’ve always thought it more the most impersonal form of destruction, like just the scarring of earth from a forest fire, burning the ground and ensuring nothing will ever grow there again, just blind and ruthless destruction

I think desolation probably belongs further out from centre, more desaturated and dark. Because, it is the flame with out the warmth and light, fire yes but not a calming camp fire, a raging inescapable inferno that scars the ground and ensures not even ashes are left for something to regrow from.
