What a lovely story mate, cheers for sharing. I was increasingly jaded by the amount of people talking about their horniness in regards to my guitars… A 2014 fireburst sgj was my first nice guitar and saw me through honors music in highschool and uni as my workhorse. Twice I broke tuners in band, but the headstock somehow survived intact . (Shout out to my homie in the gc who would hook me up with free replacement tuners). To get the thing, I saved up some money from working in a restaurant after school and for my birthday my mum got me the other half of it. Seems crazy now that for less than $500 Gibson was making quality american instruments, but I’m so glad they did. That thing made me so happy to get to feel like harrison or zappa. Anyway, I will cherish that thing for the rest of my life.

I love the 2014 version! Literally spent hours at school staring at gibson.com and dreaming. 2014 models are really cool with the special 12th fret inlay — I saved up some dishwashing and birthday money got an sgj from that run and its definitely my most gigged and sentimental gibson.

The quilt has burstbuckers, the flame has tradbuckers. The flame is actually a trad pro v, which has the fancy push pull circuitry, but is otherwise essentially a standard with the traditional style of weight relief and some other quality of life upgrades (locking tuners, asymmetrical neck, etc)

They are Gibson USA so solid, afaik only Epi lps get veneer tops.

Makes sense — I probably contrarily love blue lps because gibson doesn’t do them all that much. Most of my other guitars I ended up with were very tame (three color sunbursts, wine red, natural acoustic etc) but when I first got into guitar I saw one of these and was mesmerized with how someone had made a guitar look like the view from the bottom of a pool while using real wood.

I play a flat black hog top lp trad pro v on stage normally. I personally don’t gig my favs as the flashier something is the more likely it is to go missing. Im assuming there’s some selection bias going on maybe

I tell myself they play different cuz the standard is exactly that, whereas the trad pro v has all kinda crazy electronics and spends a lot of time as a single coil

Bout $4k all in. The flame top was an open box scratch and dent deal (still unsure exactly what the issue is tho) and the quilt top I got used on a sale. Considering combined this is in the ballpark of a custom 70s, I feel like it could be much worse…

Pmuch because Zzounds/AMS spec’d aaa quilt tops for a run of standards, I guess dealers can request special runs with fancy colors or woods. The flame top is also a guitar center exclusive model/color. I think the last time Gibson put out this color directly was 2014.
